hooon 1,089 Report post Posted August 24, 2009 fun thread... I think if you were to give sawchuck some new pads and a few months to learn butterfly he would tear up the leage. as for lines, soo many great ones to choose from. Many have simply said the production line, hard to beat. Id choose Howe-Stevie-Federov Lidstrom-Konstantinov but lets be honest, all of the combos named so far are unbelievable, fun to imagine. Whoever said the Kronwall/Konstantinov D pairing... that would be so fun to watch. i like the kocur nod too, that guy was an irreplaceable beast

I still always get a kick out of the differences between goalies of then and now. Give Sawchuk ginormous pads like those and he'd win MVP every year. Broken 16 381 Report post Posted August 24, 2009 (edited) Going with players playing for the Wings when I've been alive - Forwards Brendan Shanahan (1997) - Steve Yzerman (2000) - Pavel Datsyuk (2009) Bob Probert (1989) - Sergei Fedorov (1994) - Brett Hull (2002) Gerard Gallant (1989) - Henrik Zetterberg (2008) - Johan Franzen (2008) Darren McCarty (1997) - Igor Larionov (1997) - Martin Lapointe (2001, without the dumb penalties) Defense Paul Coffey (1996) - Nicklas Lidstrom (2006) Vladdy Konstantinov (1997) - Niklas Kronwall (2008 playoffs) Chris Chelios (2002) - Slava Fetisov (1996) Goaltending Chris Osgood (2008 and 2009 playoffs) Dominik Hasek (2002) Nailed it... My list would be very similar in that I wouldn't include any Wings from before my time. The only thing I might tweak would be the 4th line. I'd be very tempted to go with McCarty/Draper/Kocur. That line was pure money. Edit: I'd also switch Dom with Vernon. I was never a big fan of Dom. Besides... Vernon gets the nod based purely on the fact that he beat the dogs*** out of Roy at center ice. Edited August 24, 2009 by Broken
TEX-WING 0 Report post Posted August 24, 2009 Probert-Grimson-Kocur Vladdy-Rouse Osgood Now that would be "must see TV" in their prime. Ozzy would probly be the leading scorer on this line.

RedWings Gone Wild 6 Report post Posted August 24, 2009 What? So little love for Fetisov? If we're talking guys taken the context of their prime.... then Fetisov and Larionov were two of the best to ever put on a Wings uni..... In terms of Wings D.... Fetisov > everyone in the past 30 years not named Lidstrom... no contest

Fetisov > everyone in the past 30 years not named Lidstrom... no contest I generally view these as you have to take them at their best in an actual Red Wings uniform -- hence I would take Sawchuk in his prime (as a Red Wing) over 2002 Dominick Hasek. 2000s Robitaille and Hull instead of their younger selves, etc... Otherwise, Doug Harvey would be my number one defenseman. Edited August 25, 2009 by egroen
daniel1 32 Report post Posted August 25, 2009 Although I think that line is probably beaten by: Lindsay - Abel - Howe Kelly - Stewart/Pronovost Sawchuk Whom all played together as well. Well sure your line beats my line... you've got 3 guys on defense on your line!
Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted August 25, 2009 Vernon was below average? Lol... Rouse was anything but below average. I hope that's not what they were implying. 2 Stanley Cup Rings and a Conn Smythe Trophy don't spell below average.

titanium2 867 Report post Posted August 25, 2009 Best real line I have ever seen? The Russian Five Yeah I've been hoping for a new Five of some sort. The Swedish Five is the closest. They just need one more player, someone who can compliment Z and Mule. Here's hoping Ritola is as good as some say he is.
RedWings Gone Wild 6 Report post Posted August 25, 2009 (edited) Vernon was below average? Lol... Rouse was anything but below average. Rouse was very average in the context of RED WINGS HISTORY.... I wouldn't put him near the top of our 90s era defensemen (Lids, Murphy, Coffee, Fetisov, Vladdy, Chelios... tho tail end of decade, Ward.... etc).... and that's just the 90s. and Vernon? On the Wings all time squad?... uh no.... Osgood, Hasek, Cujo, Sawchuk... all better choices.... not to mention the 3 other half of fame goalies that have played for this team.... and BTW, Vernon IS NOT a hall of famer. truebladearmy 33 Report post Posted August 25, 2009 (edited) If I went all time I would go with probably: Lindsay - Yzerman - Howe Lidstrom - Kelly Sawchuck - Cheveldae It's tough to say old Goalies were better or worse than new ones, because the game has changed so much. But I think it's safe to assume Sawchuck would be amazing even today. Cheveldae I like because he's an iron man. He once played 72 games in a season, heh. That's what I consider reliable. Too bad other than his ability to play all season long he wasn't that great If I went with players I have "seen" play.... Fedorov - Yzerman - Zetterberg (With honorable mention to Datsyuk, but we'll have him center the second line, heh) Lidstrom - Murphy Vernon - Hasek All in their primes, of course. (Interesting side note: Manny Legace is Detroits all time Save percentage leader with .918 for his career in Detroit. I didn't know that.) mmamolo 287 Report post Posted August 25, 2009 I think it's kind of funny ppl are listing guys that when in their prime were amazing players but those guys never spent their prime with Detroit. The one name that stuck out to me when reading this thread was Curtis Joseph. This guy had some unbelievable years no doubt, but his time in Detroit was forgettable. I would imagine that when compiling a list like this you would make it with Wings players who performed best as a Red Wing. If you're going to do it with guys who suited up for the Wings while out of their prime, but had insane numbers and seasons while in their primes for other teams the list gets silly. Chelios (3 Norris trophies, none with Detroit) Hull (Hart, not with Detroit. 86 goal season, 131 point season etc.) Robitaille (12 30+ goal seasons, only one with Detroit) and so on and so on You get my point. I agree - with the exception of Chelios, who was rock solid in his first few years with Detroit, getting the runner-up to Lidstrom in Norris voting at the age of 40, while leading the league in +/-. I certainly would not feel bad having *that* Chelios on an all-time Red Wings team... though I personally have him as my 7th defenseman. Chelios in his prime would only be behind Lidstrom and Kelly.
