MadMan Mark 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2009 Best thing that could happen to Phoenix this year. . . just not a good coach. Kept hearing about the youth movement but then they let the young developed players get away, i.e. Blake Wheeler.
Carman 387 Report post Posted September 24, 2009 About time. Most dominant athlete ever, but a lousy coach. That team never got better with him there. I don't know if I would blame it all on him, obviously he wasn't a great coach there. But between the ownership and talent I don't think he had to tools to really shine there. NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted September 24, 2009 Smart move on his part. He just never was able to figure it out. This is just further proof that just because you can be one of the best players of all time, it doesn't mean its going to translate in to coaching success. It's a completely different mindset and thought process.

This is just further proof that just because you can be one of the best players of all time, it doesn't mean its going to translate in to coaching success. It's a completely different mindset and thought process. I'm not sure it proves much, there was really no option but to step down. It's not like he was just the head coach of the team, he was involved in so many other aspects....part owner, managing partner, etc., etc. There was really no way he could have stayed on considering the current state of ownership. I know people keep bringing up that he was paid $8 million to coach, but the $8 million was not a "coaching salary" it was far more related to his other roles and he was brough to Phoenix, largely as a marketing initiative and that's what he was really paid for. But back to your point, I do agree that great players do not necessarily make great coaches, but in Gretzky's example, I think it's hard to reach a conclusion, he really had nothing to work with. Think about how frustrating it must have been for a guy with that much talent to be coaching a team that perhaps had the least amount of talent of any team in the league. evilmrt 636 Report post Posted September 24, 2009 I'm not sure you know what you're talking about when you say "Its not a good time to be a Coyote fan" in regards to Wayne stepping down. GOOD RIDDANCE, he was totally and completely inept on the bench, and this is a GREAT thing for this team. Guess what? I was happy enough that I just bought tickets to opening night. GOODBYE GRETZKY AND DONT EVER SHOW YOUR FACE BEHIND THE BENCH AGAIN!

While I agree he never had the most talented of teams he did have his shot. The 07/08 season was a prime example and he let things fall apart. Regardless of the talent he did or didn't have, he still couldn't figure it. It's not a knock on him, its just that he doesn't have the mindset for that particular position. Most people don't. But between the ownership and talent I don't think he had to tools to really shine there. Again, I'm not really sure you know what you're talking about. He was a part owner in the team...its not like he didn't hold any influence over decisions made in the front office, because he did. He had a seat at the owners' table, and you cannot discount that. Carman 387 Report post Posted September 24, 2009 Again, I'm not really sure you know what you're talking about. He was a part owner in the team...its not like he didn't hold any influence over decisions made in the front office, because he did. He had a seat at the owners' table, and you cannot discount that. Well yes he had input on the decisions. I'm more or less talking about the uncertainty of the future which could not help the situation at all. I'm sure he had a hand at the lack luster seasons. But it's not like the team went from a Stanley Cup team to a league worst team is it?

DesertWing 11 Report post Posted September 24, 2009 (edited) Best thing that could happen to Phoenix this year. . . just not a good coach. Kept hearing about the youth movement but then they let the young developed players get away, i.e. Blake Wheeler. Nothing the Coyotes could do in the Wheeler situation. They offered the kid the max money, but he never wanted to play in Phoenix. Too bad the Coyotes wasted the fifth overall pick on him (and a pick that drew a lot of criticism). TheBadOne 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2009 It's regrettable but it's for the best. I hope the Coyotes stay in Phoenix; I've adopted them since I came down here (still pissed that Downey got cut, though ) and respect what Doaner's had to go through to try and keep the team in good spirits. He's my favorite captain since Steve (no disrespect to Lidstrom) and I hope they can start doing better for themselves.
evilmrt 636 Report post Posted September 24, 2009 Dave Tippett is going to be announced as the new head coach this afternoon, according to the Toronto Sun. Sun This is a big upgrade!
Kira 451 Report post Posted September 24, 2009 Now where will we find the scintillating entertainment value in watching the Coyotes? Whine Gretzky was the most fun to watch when he popped his fuses. Oh well, don't let the door kick you in the ass on the way out.
SweWings 45 Report post Posted September 24, 2009 Not surprising considering his salary and the financial problems the organization is having.
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted September 25, 2009 I'm glad to see Tippett back behind the bench in the NHL, if not for my own selfish reasons. My cousin Derek served as Tippett's video coach in Dallas for four seasons before leaving the Stars this past season for the Coyotes and a position as pro scout. It's a good sign for him if he decides we wants to get back into coaching.
Cern 0 Report post Posted September 25, 2009 Great for the team, bad for the franchise. Gretzky was the only thing about the Coyotes most people in Arizona had any real identity with, him gone leaves no recognizable face to draw people in.

Gretzky was the only thing about the Coyotes most people in Arizona had any real identity with, him gone leaves no recognizable face to draw people in. Believe me when I tell you Gretzky is recognizable out here... but that's definitely not a good thing considering the Coyotes' record.
