cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted September 25, 2009 A personal favourite: I thought this quote was interesting; from Toronto Star : "I learned to play hockey in Southern Ontario, and I know what great fans they have there. It's my hope they too will have an NHL franchise in the not too distant future." The League should make sure he gets a job he wants, for the good of the League. I was going to suggest a "Gretzky for Commissioner" campaign, but I think he's too honest.

haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted September 27, 2009 Ruh roh. DETROIT -- Hockey Canada executive director and Detroit Red Wings vice president Steve Yzerman plans to call Wayne Gretzky to find out his plans for the future. Yzerman said in a phone interview Saturday that he has been in contact with Gretzky to talk about his experiences at the Olympics. Gretzky resigned Thursday as the coach and director of hockey operations for the financially struggling Phoenix Coyotes. He led Hockey Canada during the previous two Olympics. Yzerman was appointed last year to take over for Gretzky as Canada gears up for a bid to win men's hockey gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games. Yzerman has been a Red Wings vice president since retiring three years ago. http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/story/12269080
Manoir 70 Report post Posted September 27, 2009 Gretzky had a lot do with the Coyotes problems, mainly because there always seemed to be a conflict of interest with his hirings. First, he brought in his buddy Mike Barnett as GM who made wonderful deals such as Briere for Gratton and signings such as Jovonovski for 5 years 30 mil. . Then Gretzky put his own brother in charge of the Coyotes scouting dept. In 2007, when the Coyotes were looking for a new GM, Gretzky was the main man who was conducting the interviews despite being the coach. Add all this up and throw in his 8 mil per year salary and it is clear that his reign was nothing short of a disaster that may have killed a franchise. cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted September 29, 2009 From TSN : If Wayne Gretzky wants to return to the National Hockey League in some capacity, count the Los Angeles Kings as one of the teams interested in The Great One. Kings president and general manager Dean Lombardi expressed his interest in Gretzky in an interview with the Fan 590 radio station in Toronto. Lombardi, who said he spoke briefly to Gretzky, didn't specify the role that he had in mind for the NHL's career-leading scorer. "I'd like to bring (Gretzky) back in some capacity now that he's done there," Lombardi told the Fan 590. "I think when you talk about kids learning to win, I think it would be great if we could bring him back to where he almost brought this place to the promised land."
