Give them at least 20 games

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

It seems like since the season has started everytime I come back to this forum people have been expecting the worst towards a season that really hasn't even started yet. Isn't it fair to give them at least 20-25 games before we bring up any ideas about trades or coaching moves...

all it takes is a couple big games and the momentum is there. Making the playoffs should be the priority not winning every single game like the years of past. Let them gell a bit and get used to the new personel and then the chemestry will set in. In the words of retarded rock star Fred Durst "rock, gotta have faith"

I'll give them 10 before I start really being concerned. 20 games is a quarter of the entire season, which is waiting a little long for me - but then again, playoffs have been made by teams getting hot down the last 20 games of the season too (Blues, Pens last year).

Saying that though, I don't anticipate getting too freaked out, I bet the Wings come around in the next 3 - 4 games.

I thought about posting a thread like this, and then figured it was a waste of time. When we get to 20 games, everyone says give them the first half.

I agree w/ opinions that McLean needs to be back on D though, and that has little to do with our poor first 5 games.

20 games is 40 points. 40 points can bump a team out of the playoffs. I say Wings need to get it in gear sooner than later.

If the wings go 2-18, then yeah, your point is valid. Even if the Wings play .500 is the first 20 games, we can expext to be at most 10 points out of first, not so insurmountable if you ask me. 20 games is a good benchmark to see where you're at as a team. If changes need to be made, I would agree that would be the best time to do it.

YES! 2, or even 5 games, is not enough to judge how the entire season will go. Granted, if we don't win again in the next six games, then 20 is going to seem long but I don't think that's going to happen {fingers crossed, hoping I'm right}.

Edit: spelling

Are the Red Wings in Trouble?

-- Eric Duhatschek

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/blogs/globe...article1323483/

Against Buffalo, coach Mike Babcock sat out two aging role players, Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby, which meant that among the 12 forwards in the lineup, only five were there for the start of last season: Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Dan Cleary, Valtteri Filppula and Tomas Holmstrom.

Sometimes, the answer may be just as simple as that. Trying to integrate all those new faces doesn’t happen instantly, no matter how successful you’ve been in the past. As a result, Red Wings’ fans may need to show a quality that they’ve lost familiarity with over the years, but that Maple Leaf supporters understand only too well.

Patience.

And maybe a little faith that Holland still has the right touch when it comes to moving players on and off the roster to get it right eventually.

I like everything that this guy wrote. The first 2/3 of the article is ALL of the bitching we've seen here on LGW in one concise little article. The bottom third is what you see here.

(I had to strike out that line about the Maple Leafs... 'cuz I just can't support that kind of patience. I'm old enough to remember some of the "Dead Wings" Era)

...but let's have a little more faith, okay?

We're not even out of OCTOBER!

I think it's a matter of people not believing in the current system perhaps? Maybe questioning some of the lineups that have been put together and some of the off season or lack of off season movement? I like to think that this team can win stretches of games though. Im talking 5-10 in a row if they get hot, who knows. I can guarantee the only worry they (Babcock & the players) have is what playoff spot they will be. They may not look great on paper and sure the first few games have been scary. But haven't teams that have started worse than this in the league gone on to the playoffs?

Only problem is its not 5 games, its 87 games stretching back to the night we raised the banner against Toronto. Its seems all of our faults from last season are back, but without the stacked roster to help us get away with it.

My main complaints are the following:

1. Off-season, Holland and company talk about a drastic, improved defense. . . haven't seen it yet, and we didn't lose any D-men

2. Goaltending is reminiscent of 08-09 reg season (yeah, only 5 games, but WHO is really comfortable watching Ozzie in Buffalo or Howard in Sweden?)

3. Offense has not kicked it into gear. Team looks confused and disorganized in the O-end and rarely can sustain an attack at even strength

4. PK still gives me worries, Buffalo scored way to easy and early on their first PP goal

Thankfully, we haven't lost our Power Play.

I can give them a little more time, but not 20 games. We have LA and Col coming to the Joe. IMO, we HAD BETTER win both of those games.

Oh, we're making the playoffs.

I don't even think they're worried about what playoff spot they'll be yet, but I get your point...

...and there are currently teams stinking it up WAYYY worse than the Wings and some of those teams will probably make the playoffs too.

I'm just glad to see that not everyone has the "sky is falling" mentality after a handful of games into the current season.

I would just like to see them make the obvious changes that need to be made. Line tinkering and chemistry is all fine and dandy, but if you're playing players who hurt the team in 5 on 5 situations, then you're not going to win.

Well I think its safe to say that everyone agrees that this current team, more or less the same line formations can make it to the playoffs, correct? Then why is everyone freaking out? Once you get to the playoffs the players like Holmstrom (who for whatever reason is getting beaten down by alot of fans), Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterberg & Kronwall will carry the rest of the team just like the last 2 years. The point is to get to the playoffs because anything can happen there. I just can't understand that we are 5 games into the season...with alot of young talent coming through, a new backup goalie who has waited so long for a shot, A new defensemen who is a gigantic Swede that can hit and score & one of the best playoff goalies as of late in net and I hear people talk about trades, coaching moves, lineup changes, call ups/call downs? I trust the whole organization to put the best talent they have on the ice so I can sit back and watch hockey and given what they have as far as cap money goes I think they did a pretty damn good job...

For the most part, I agree with the sentiment in this thread. However, I find it very worrisome that the same issues seem to be plaguing this team. I'd feel a whole let better if there was a marked improvement on the PK from last year.

I agree, give the team some time. We're only 5 games into the Regular season. Let's wait atleast 20 games and maybe longer before all this stuff is brought up. Have confidence in the Wings they will get their act together.

I know there were stretches in the 2008 season that probably felt equally helpless, but I don't like what I see right now. Pretty much everyone assumed that we would have some trouble scoring, but that's not what worries me. I'm more worried about the complete disorganization of the defense, and our difficulty playing the puck-control style of offense we're accustomed to.

The score against LA indicates that we won easily, but I thought the team looked awful for the majority of the game. We spent huge portions of the game back on our heels chasing the Kings.

If there's one encouraging sign, it's probably that we're already getting secondary scoring, and it seems inevitable that guys like Zetterberg and Datsyuk are going to put up their usual production when it's all said and done. Until that happens, though, it is a little scary looking around trying to figure out who's going to put the puck in the net for us. I don't think Maltby and Holmstrom can be counted on as our go-to guys.
