russianswede919293 95 Report post Posted October 17, 2009 http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/10/pa...et_to_make.html For as much hype as Patrick Eaves' signing justafiably created, from myself included, he has yet to really establish himself as a forechecking force whose speed, tenacity, and superb shot and pass-blocking stick work merits inclusion in the Wings' lineup over the crash-and-bang speedster that is Helm and the surprisingly nasty Abdelkader, whose penchant for driving the opposition to distraction reminds me of Kirk Maltby in his heyday. Sounds like Eaves has not impressed the Wings management... I have been impressed with him at times but he has also looked invisible at times. When he uses his speed I like what he brings, but he is very inconsistent with the use of that speed.
P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted October 17, 2009 There was no comment from Holland or anyone else on that article, so I wouldn't say that he hasn't impressed. Babcock has said some good words about Eaves when he's played. The Wings are quite stacked on their lower lines especially now with May's signing. That's good as it should keep the players awake. Eaves has to earn his roster spot along with May and Abdelkader and Maltby and Draper can't take their spots for granted anymore. It seems that lately May has been put on the roster only when it seems that his toughness is needed. Buffalo and L.A. aren't known for their enforcers so he sat those games. Guest Shoreline Report post Posted October 17, 2009 Unfortunate for Eaves. I've followed his story since I saw him in juniors, and especially that WJC US win over Canada and things were rather on the up and up and promising. Just looks like he's had a hard time handling the big show and finding his game. Gotta be frustrating for him.

This. And when everyone was tagging him immediately as the next Dan Cleary, I knew it was doomed to fail. I thought he was going to be the better of off-season acquisitions, but he has been almost completely invisible.
Buppy 1,720 Report post Posted October 17, 2009 I can't say I've been all that impressed by Jabs or Draper either, or even May (though I was a little surprised by his energy and ability...didn't know much about him, expected something more Downey-esque). I don't expect Maltby to maintain his current level, nor do I expect Homer or Bert to go injury free. So that's 7 players filling 5 spots (4 once Mule comes back) plus whatever other injuries we get along the way. So I'm sure Patty will get plenty of chances, provided he doesn't start getting worse. dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted October 17, 2009 So far he's been filler, in the same way that Kopecky was filler last year. He really doesn't bring anything that warrants him playing instead of Helm, Abdelkader or really anyone else on the Wings roster. I think he should be rotated in though, Maltby/Draper/May shouldn't play every game.
Carman 387 Report post Posted October 17, 2009 He beats the hell out of Kopecky that's for sure. He'll settle in.
Lamothe 5 Report post Posted October 17, 2009 I wouldn't be dissapointed too soon, its not like cleary improved overnight Indeed! If we look at Dan Cleary's stats in his first season with Detroit in comparsion to the last 3, we see something that would depict his first year here being fairly similar to those years previous in his career. See Below: Cleary's Stats, past few years... EDM 01-02 : 65GP 10G 19A 29P EDM 02-03 : 54GP 4G 13A 17P PHX 03-04 : 68GP 6G 11A 17P ----- 04-05 : LOCKOUT DET 05-06 : 77GP 3G 12A 15P DET 06-07 : 71GP 20G 20A 40P DET 07-08 : 63GP 20G 22A 44P DET 08-09 : 74GP 14G 26A 40P If Eaves is to turn his game around, it will take longer than 6 games into the season. Will his story be AS great of a success as Cleary's? I don't know. But I never thought Dan Cleary would come here and score 20 goals, or be a top six forward. I liked him when he made the team because I saw his "I give 150% every shift" attitude. It wasn't about points then, but his production came as he improved. The same will happen with Eaves. Hopefully.
russianswede919293 95 Report post Posted October 17, 2009 I'm not trying to compare him to Cleary at all though. Even before Cleary was scoring he impressed me with almost every shift. He was grinding out every shift, using his skills to his advantage and never let up a second. I just haven't gotten that same impression. There are shifts where Eaves has looked lost. I hope I am wrong, but I just am not seeing as much from him as I expected.

Buffalo and Chicago didn't dress enforcers against us when May was playing. Our PK is the other team's enforcer. As for Eaves, he's a nobody, so what did you guys expect? Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted October 17, 2009 I have noticed brief flashes of potential him since we called him up. You can tell by his style of play that he plays more like a scorer and less like a grinder, but he still plays really tentative out there it seems. He needs to build some confidence back up and work his way back to a zone that he is ideal to compete in from a grinder's level. If he can do that he'll be fine in our system. Icesurfer 75 Report post Posted October 17, 2009 Eaves is not going to learn and be comfortable with the system sitting on the bench.
RusDRW 155 Report post Posted October 17, 2009 (edited) there is no point to give Eaves plating time now. I remember how Danny started here - each and every pre-season game was like a last battle for jim, just like 7th game of SCF. He always left everything on the ice. That's why he earned his place on this team, is on comfortable contract now, plays top 6 minutes on the best team in this league, and I can't imagine my Red Wings without him now. He is everything true Canadian hockey was all about (at least, as was advertized in USSR:)) around 25 years ago when I was young. I didn't see such type of effort from Eaves... Hack & Whack Rule! 160 Report post Posted October 18, 2009 I think he'll be a good fit with the team if he can get some skating time. It's too hard to figure them out when you don't see them a whole lot...for me, anyway. He can bring some energy and that's always a good thing. Wait and see, I guess. Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted October 18, 2009 Wow, overreaction much? 7 games into the season, a very looooong season, he'll play many games over the course of it and impress in due time. FWIW, I think he's looked fine.
Dimaline312000 51 Report post Posted October 18, 2009 (edited) I'm sorry maybe it's just me and maybe I'm an idiot but I never would have signed Eaves, Williams, Bertuzzi or Delmore. About the only UFA I would have signed is maybe Brad May. Just as a part-time enforcer. I personally would have gone for someone bigger. But that's just me. Delmore really has nothing to do with the Wings. He was more or less just a depth veteran type player for grand rapids. I doubt he'll ever see the ice for the red wings
