Well, the 49ers have pretty much stunk of s*** since the late 90s, and I still follow them. We all know the Wings will have their time again of difficulties.

It's way too early to be talking about this though. I also wouldn't put much stock into the people who said we were gonna miss the playoffs after the first few games, as people predicted this the same year the Wings won the cup the previous season, as well as go nowhere in the playoffs these playoffs before us and there's always a few idiots who get all doom-and-gloom way before it's even time to start reasonably feeling that way. They not only need to be thrown off the bandwagon but the bandwagon needs to hit reverse and run 'em over, then keep going forward again.

I would say without a doubt I would follow the wings the exact same amount as I did in the 70's

Judging by most of the replies in this thread you don't know me,let me introduce myself.Hi,I'm Dan Bylsma and some day am going to make you a Pens fan....exclusively :-)

I'm not sure what you're asking.. are you asking would I still watch the games if I knew beforehand that they would miss the playoffs this year? In that case the answer is yes I would, and I would also put a s***load of cash on them missing it. There has to be some high odds on that right? I would still be a fan, just a rich fan.

Or are you asking would I still be watching if the Wings turned into the Wings of the 70's/80's and constantly missed the playoffs? In that case the answer is yes.

Only thing that could make me question my allegiance is if they traded away Datsyuk and Zetterberg for Chris Pronger, Tootoo and Corey Perry.

Been a fan since '78, when I was, what my grandfather termed "a little whippersnapper". I've seen the good...I've seen the bad...I've seen the "holy s***, this hockey is ugly". I'm not a fair weather fan. I'm a fan. I wouldn't bail just because they're having another s***ty season, I've got too much invested.

Honestly, the first year that the Wings miss the playoffs will be the worst, considering:

1. Every other teams' fans will enjoy rubbing it in our faces

2. Us fans haven't gotten used to losing since the late 80s.

But no matter what I will be a Wings fan. Every year.

I watched them when they were crap all through the crappy years of the 80's. I watched them struggle and break through in the 90's. I watch them know as they do their thing!

The Wings and hockey have been a big part of my life since 1979, and I am not going anywhere anytime soon.

I am a Red Wings fan first, a hockey fan 2nd. The only way I would stop pulling fr the Red Wings is if by some cruel twist of fate they ceased to exist, then I would have no choice but to find a new team. Since I know that would never happen, there is no way I would allow myself to cheer less for my favorite team in any sport just because they are struggling. In fact, I think I would cheer even harder during the lean years because deep down I would know that it would make the successful times that much sweeter. I guess it's the optimist in me, but I could not change loyalties for any reason than the complete lack of existence of the object of said loyalty.

Come on, the Wings will make the playoffs, we have some of the best talent in the league.

I mentioned this in another discussion, in the first 12 games we've only played 4 at The Joe, where we are 3-0-1.

Edit: To answer the question, I'm a Detroit fan. It's a city thing for me first and foremost.

I've been a Lions fan for 43 years. Dad always said it builds character.

Remember the Lions' mottos:

(Beginning of the season) WE'RE NOT MATHEMATICALLY ELIMINATED YET!

(End of the season) THERE'S ALWAYS NEXT YEAR!

Would I still watch the Wings? Heck yes!

This. It goes from being good, to being angry at how bad they are, then it just becomes funny, like the Maple Leafs and Lions. So hell yeah I would still watch.

The other thing is, it's so early, a simple three game winning stream could put us right up among the top teams in the league, and 3 game winning streaks aren't THAT hard. The Wings just started out in a slump, most likely. We can debate whether this team is a serious contender for the Cup, but it's kind of hard to seriously argue that the Wings will miss the playoffs, the team, even half-assing it, can put together enough wins to make it in.
