kylee 727 Report post Posted November 24, 2009 If they can hang in there for a couple guys to return, it'll certainly help them down the stretch. Lets just hope nobody else on the team goes down. I doubt we'll win the presidents trophy now. Let Sharks or Hawks have it. We'll eliminate them in the first or second round with (hopefully) a full, rejuvenated and healthy line up. thats absolutely key. i say lets see the Wings take in the 4th spot or higher and get the rest of the team back and go after the hawks. Spongewingredpants 75 Report post Posted November 24, 2009 wouldnt be the first team to be in the SCF one year and miss the playoffs the next year. They simply need to hang on and stay close to the 7th or 8 spot until Franzen, Flip and the others are back
LeftWinger 5,153 Report post Posted November 24, 2009 Yes to answer the OP's question..... very concerning, must make a deal NOW for a goalie and some scoring and some defensive help. Unless Holland is just content to BARELY make the playoffs and discount this season as a wash... ...just do me a afvor Holland, don't wait until Lidstrom drags his feet and makes a decision sometime in August of next year before you sign some folks! PLEASE! I beg of you! Tell Lidstrom he has to make a decision BEFORE July 1st or you're moving forward! (and please don't sign him for a penny over $4M!!!!!) Stiffy 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2009 It will be a battle to make it for sure, but that will tell us what this team is made of won't it? In past years this was a sure thing. How many of us saw the season as a warm up for the 100% sure to come playoffs? I often had that attitude, so this is a wake up call indeed. This is going to be a long hard year, but for some of you young whipper snappers, and you have all heard it before, it wasn't always so easy being a Wings fan. Maybe there are a few blessings here in disguise. For so long the youngsters seemed held back by a Wings team that had no room for anyone who was not 100% ready for the big time. Now is an opportunity for some to step up. Coaching has not been this challenged for a long time, so let's see what they can do as well. I'm hoping the team attitude is that making the playoffs is essential.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted November 24, 2009 (edited) I still say no and this freaking out attitude is incredibly premature and silly as there is still 75% of a hockey season left to be played... Concern? Yes. Missing the playoffs? Not even close. Edited November 24, 2009 by SouthernWingsFan
Free_Candy 38 Report post Posted November 24, 2009 (edited) I seriously doubt you will miss the playoffs. It would take something pretty freakish and significant for that to happen, and I find it hard to believe there are 8 teams that are better than you and can stay far enough ahead all season that it would put you out of the race. StormJH1 231 Report post Posted November 24, 2009 I don't agree with trading for a goalie mid-season. There's no question that goaltending is and will be an issue this year, but the Wings haven't had elite goaltending since probably Hasek in 2002. And with the cap the way it is, we have basically no money tied up in goaltenders now, but there's nobody of consequence you could bring in without taking on significantly more of a cap hit. The defense needs to play better (though the Kronwall injury doesn't hurt).
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted November 24, 2009 That'd be funny if we finish 8th and wind up playing San Jose in the first round, with all our injured players being healed and ready to go. They'd s*** their pants in San Jose, especially after what happened last year having to face that Anaheim team in the first round.

clutchngrab 12 Report post Posted November 24, 2009 As long as one of our top 2 offensive players is saddled with Bert and Homer, and Rafalski does little to justify his paycheck, then we may lose as many as we win.
LeftWinger 5,153 Report post Posted November 24, 2009 Wow, I'm hearing echoes from February '08... didn't you claim you were past that? I am.... I am being very civil compared to then. I can see Holland saying he is gonna wait on Lidstrom and Lids wo't decide until August and there will be no quality F/A's left. I am not calling him names or for him to be fired. I am just pleading with him to have a deal done for LIds so that they can maybe ****** up some help.... I do, on the other hand, want to see a better goaltender here before the playoffs... You didn't learn anything from last year. April comes and Ozzie flips the switch and carries us all the way to game 7 of the SCF. His name is circulated for the Conn Smyth BUT our offense scores only 1 goal and we lose. Now you want to throw Ozzie under the bus?
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted November 25, 2009 I'd say goaltending is #3 on our list of "Needs to fix." Offense and defense needs to be rebuilt.
Dynheart 42 Report post Posted November 25, 2009 Goaltending is not an issue this year. Both Ozzie and Howard have been doing more than their fair share of keeping this team in games (with the exception of a few games for both, but apparently to some that's enough to justify both being burned like the witches of old). With the exception of 2 games (where we scored 9 and 7), we have been absolutley HORRIBLE offensively. Do I have to mention defense, which IMO, is doing worse than the offense. I'm sorry to break it to all these Ozzie/Howard haters, but no matter who is in net for this team atm...we will still probably have the same record. Both of our goalies have stole several games for us, and I think it's unfair for the fanbase to expect them to steal a game every game night. I agree with an above poster, goaltending is our #3 problem, and since this game consist of basically 4 part on the ice (Offense, Defense, Goaltending, Coaching)... The best defense is the best offense imo. The more you keep it out of our zone the better. The defense shouldn't be turning it over everytime they touch the puck in OUR zone...As for goaltending last night, IMO Ozzie didn't let in one weak goal. You take a hot team, an open man who can basically count to 5 before he can shoot...without anybody to bother him (no defense). That means he can point, look, take his time and beat ANY goal tender. I think alot of people under estimate what an offensive player in the NHL can really do when they have atleast 5 seconds to shoot a freakin' puck (by the way, both shots Erat was WAYYY open for WAYYY to long and was set up for a quick one timer). But oh well, people will believe they are NHL coaches/GMs and think that a pefectly placed slap shot easily going 90-95mph and hitting, just barely the top left corner and barely crossing the line...is a weak goal...lol As for injuries, we are going to struggle hardcore this year. We'll make the play-offs for sure, but we wont be a top seed. If holland/babcock were smart, they would rest the injured till they were 100000000% health so that way we can make a strong play off appearance.

Again. You said it yourself, there's still 30 games left to play, and last time I checked the Wings were only one point out of the playoffs. Everyone with more points is also somewhere on the schedule between now and the end of the season, so its not even like the Wings need to rely on other teams losing to make the playoffs.
