13dangledangle 968 Report post Posted November 26, 2009 I was just looking over players and cap #s for next season and I dont even know what to think. Who is gonna stay? who is gonna go? Who can we bring in? By the look of it we have 15 players with contracts ending, 6 being RFA's (Abby,Eaves, Helm, Larsson, Meech and Miller) the remaining 9 UFA's are Bertuzzi, Williams, Maltby, Holmstrom, Janik, Lebda, Lilja, May and of course Lidstrom. Assume we will sign 4 out the 6 RFA's for around 4.5 Mill (Helm, Abby, Eaves, Larsson). Now looking at the list of UFA's I would really only like Lids and maybe Lilja (depending). If they signed for a total of 7mill this would mean that we would have only 29 players signed at 59.375Mill...? I must be doing something wrong, so if someone could shed some light on this it would be awesome! http://www.nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=DET (all numbers and facts from here)
skyphoenix 153 Report post Posted November 26, 2009 Holmstrom and Maltby need to retire after this season. I think we will resign the RFAs besides maybe Meech because we could probably pick up someone better on the Free Agency in the offseason. Lilja probably depends on how healthy he is. If he isn't playing by the end of the season, I don't think he'll be playing anymore. Lebda can go, Bertuzzi and Williams can go. I'd maybe want to keep May considering how great his personality is and how well he is as a fourth liner. Other than that, I would like to see us keep Miller because he has been effective on the PK and could be a good fourth/third liner. He has been working extremely hard since he was signed and it shows.
mmamolo 287 Report post Posted November 26, 2009 Unfortunately we almost have too many depth guys now. Next year Abdelkader will definitely have a full time roster spot. I'd like to see May back. I have a suspiscion Maltby will be back as well. The way Eaves is playing he'll be back. Helm obviously too. I've liked Miller a lot but is there room with everyone? It doesnt seem like it. Personally, I think Hlmstrom may be back as well at a reduced rate. I absolutely cannot see Lebda or Meech being back. Janik seems like he is on his way to being reupped for GR. Larsson and Lidstrom are no brainers (assuming Lids wants to play). We'll be freeing up some money, no doubt. Seeing as Kindl is out of minor league options (i believe) means he'll be up with the club too. Ideally Lilja will be back at say his same contract of $1.25M with Kindl as our 7. I think up front we'll say good bye to Bertuzzi and Williams.
Yzerfan1999 81 Report post Posted November 26, 2009 Am I seeing something wrong here? Please correct me... We have roughly 41 Million already invested in contracts for next season with Lidstrom, Holmstrom, Bertuzzi, Williams, Maltby, May, Lilja, and Lebda all UFA's. And Abdelkader, Helm, Eaves, Miller, Meech and Larsson RFA's. Given the current cap is $56.8 million - that gives us $15.8 million for 14 players. For the sake of guessing we retain UFA's: Lidstrom 4.5 Holmstrom 1 May .5 9.8 Million remaining and RFA's: Abdelkader 1 Helm 1.5 Eaves 1 Larsson 1 5.3 Million remaining with a roster of Franzen - Datsyuk - Holmstrom Clearly - Zetterberg - Fillpula Helm - Eaves - Abdelkader May - Draper - Lidstrom - Rafalski Stuart - Kronwall Ericsson - Osgood Howard Larsson So we would have 5.3 to fill a 12th, and 13th FWD position and a 6th and 7th D position? How does it work when you call up minor league contracts? Does it count against the NHL Cap or what? How glorious would it be if Lids took a ridiculous pay cut and played for 2 million or something. What do you think the odds are that we see something like in 2002 when the guys diverted salary to bring in Hull, Luc, and Hasek? Would Lids do something like that if the Wings presented him with some kind of offer like 'we can bring in Kovalchuk if you play for 1.5 this year'?

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted November 27, 2009 Helm at over 850k is absolutely ridiculous. I get that he's a fan favorite, and yes he does a good job for his role on the team. But unless he's going to turn into a perennial 20-goal, 50-point player in two or three years and that is a long-term deal (say 6 years) that deal is gross overpayment. Or paying for potential. Neither of which Ken Holland does in 95% of cases.

Not that we're allowed to say this out loud but if he only ends up playing 10 years... he'll end up getting 75 over 10 years. 7.5 per. Maybe he could get more somewhere but really.... it's not a bad offer. Plus he gets a decent set up man to play with for the rest of his career. Imagine those 2 pairs for the next decade. Dats and Koval. Zett and Franzen. I see Flip Leino and Helm Ab as pairs as well. The other parts we can move around for the best fit. Forwards would be mint. We'll just draft defencemen with our early picks. The only problem I see with this is what does teh cap do from here? We need to be able to give our young guys raises as they progress through. Reups... Lids 1 year @ 4. Hey, why not? Bert or JWill for 1.5 Whoever they prefer or whichever will go for 1.5. Helm and Ab get .9 a piece. Lilja at 1 assuming he's good to go. If not Lebda, Meech or Kolosov would work for less. Holmstrom will still be useful and I'd guess he'd be happy to go one more at 1. After that Hudler can have his spot playing with the Russians.
