MONTREAL -- Jonas Gustavsson and the Toronto Maple Leafs took no chances when they learned the netminder's heart was racing Tuesday.

Doctors performed a minor medical procedure known as an ablation to address Gustavsson's heart issue in training camp, but Wilson said the major difference this time is that his heart rate came down on its own. In training camp the heart rate didn't come down until he received medication at the hospital.

"I'm not going to be responsible for someone keeling over during a game," said Wilson. "A game is not that important."

Wilson said Gustavsson was to remain in hospital overnight would return to Toronto on Wednesday, where he will be examined by the cardiologist who treated him during training camp.

They ended up winning the game, but I didn't even realize he had a heart condition and had heart surgery during training camp. Being somebody with a heart condition and having had open heart surgeries, I know it is something that we have to take very seriously. Good call leaving the game and getting checked out at the hospital.

Hopefully he'll be alright and back to his usual duties very soon.

Scary stuff. Does he still get credit for the shutout? That would be kind of weird if he did.

Well he got credit for the win on the box score that I saw on NHL On The Fly, so I guess so??

I didn't even realize he had a heart condition and had heart surgery during training camp.

Ablations are done by fishing a cauterizer through the blood vessels (from the arm or leg), so no need for surgery. It's still a crazy story though. I wonder what he has going on with his heart. I do know that these types of procedures are really hard to perform and only the brightest doctors can actually do a good job. Here's to him feeling better and having a fruitful career.

oh, cold chills here, thinking about Jiri or worse, Sergei Zholtok (who died from the same type of issue Jiri has, in 2004 during the lockout).

Hope they find an answer and he recovers fully and completely.

It is just a game, but it's all some of these guys know... and certainly what they love. Best of luck to Jonas!

I really hope he gets better permanently, one of the few bright spots on Toronto's team this year.

Yeah I sure hope this doesn't turn out to be something recurring... really strange though because he already went through this once and then they supposedly "fixed" it but apparantly there's more to it.

The only bright spot in this is that he they were able to re-establish a regular rhythm without medication or ablation this time around. It was momentary and his heart went back to normal while he was still in the dressing room, but given what happened in training camp, they took no chances and had him go to the hospital. He was fine at the hospital and they let him go after a couple hours.

He's back in Toronto today feeling fine and had a visit with a heart specialist. I would assume he'll undergo another battery of tests and they probably won't let him back on the ice until they know what's going on for sure.

Kudos to Joey Mac for playing well for 40 minutes. He found out while the team was getting ready to head back on the ice that he was going in.

Though this isn't too important, I'm pretty sure the win (and thus the shutout) goes to the goalie who was on the ice for the game winning goal.

Gustavsson got the win, but neither goalie is credited with a shutout, as you have to be the only goaltender to appear for your team in order to be credited with the SO.

What happened in training camp besides ablation? Was it in training camp that he first discovered he had a heart condition?

His heart rhythm got all out of whack during training camp physicals when they did that test on the bike where they peddle like hell with that mask over their face. I can't remember what it's called but they all hate it.

When it happened in training camp, they couldn't get his heart back into normal rhythm until they got him to the hospital and they medicated him. They did the ablation at that time.

The episode last night was much less severe and didn't require medication or another ablation.

Sounds like a stress test.

I've had those done many times at U of M hospital, except they put me on a treadmill and go all kinds of crazy. Uphill running, downhill running, etc and they keep telling you to keep going and going until you feel like you are literally going to die. And all that done w/ the most intrusive mask you can think of on. They are NOT fun. I hate them. I could see why everyone else would hate them too.

I'll be keeping an eye on him though. I am sure he has access to the best doctors so he has that going for him.

Same here my good friend. Soon as I saw the title I was hoping for the best. Scary things when your heart starts acting up and you have heart disease or some other heart problems.

Gustavsson will apparently have surgery to hopefully correct whatever it is that's wrong with his heart.

Thanks for the update. Hopefully they fix it for good.
