Pucks 66 Report post Posted December 11, 2009 They should rename it to intent to F*ck over our game.
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted December 11, 2009 I was watching this live and the puck was clearly loose just from the regular broadcast angle. Terrible call once again. Montreal had a couple of questionable penalties in this period as well. I don't think they played well enough to win this one anyway but the officiating in the 3rd certainly didn't help their chances. I saw the last half of this game, so I saw this call and yes, from the broadcast angle, the puck was by the pad, but clearly not covered. However, from the refs angle (corner), he wouldn't have been able to see it. He blew the whistle well before the puck was shot in the net. In the end, it was the wrong call as the puck was loose, but I've seen those calls several times over the years, it happens. It's the "intent to blow the whistle" calls that I have only seen more recently. This was not one of those calls, the whistle was blown, it wasn't an "intent." I can understand mistakes in early whistles, while frustrating, there isn't too much you can do, mistakes happen. I just can't understand why they can't fix the "intent" issue, there's gotta be a way around that.
IceMunkee 15 Report post Posted December 11, 2009 I was at the game the other night and we just had a field day with the "intent" whistle. What a s***ty rule! I think it should be the it is my party and I will cry if I want to rule. The wife was pretty surprised when she came home last night from work and the chore list had not even been looked at, I simply said I can't be in trouble because I had "intent to do my chores." She replied with the "Intent to sleep good on the couch" rule.
Carman 387 Report post Posted December 11, 2009 It's really hurting the reputation of the game. It's getting ridiculous.
Shady Ultima 40 Report post Posted December 11, 2009 I actually agree with Carman. Every time people see this, they're laughing. If Bettman wants to make the NHL really popular again, he'll take out the favouritism, the silly unprofessional things, make this league play like adults. wingnut40 176 Report post Posted December 11, 2009 The clock doesn't stop until the whistle blows, so the play should not either! This. They should rename it to intent to F*ck over our game. This too. If the whole "intent" is the time it takes for them to put the whistle in their mouth, why not jut keep it in? That call on the Habs was crap. I wonder if the refs see that there's a chance to score and then blow the whistle right before so the goal won't count...

Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted December 11, 2009 Hmm, two no-goals that benefit Pittsburgh in less than a week.
HOCKEY MATTERS 167 Report post Posted December 11, 2009 Hmm, two no-goals that benefit Pittsburgh in less than a week. Makes it hard not to be cynical, doesn't it?
DylanMckay 1 Report post Posted December 11, 2009 The rule is terrible. Is it something that was instituted post-lockout? I don't recall so many disallowed goals in the 90's and early 2000's. I get an angry feeling in my stomach when teams lose a goal to this B.S rule.
Lovin Jiri Fischer 147 Report post Posted December 11, 2009 Intent to blow the whistle is a joke. How about do your job and then have your whistle ready and actually blow it? A goaltender has the intent to make the save, so does that mean a goal shouldn't count because he intended on catching the puck? All players who shoot have intent to score. Does that mean they should get the goal every time they shoot? I intend to get 100% on all of my final exams this week. I guess that's the same thing as actually getting 100%. I should tell my profs that. I hope to see this rule gone soon. Or at least make Toronto's replays able to trump intent to blow. Right now it's the other way around and that's stupid. Video replay should trump every time. Or each coach should get one challenge per game.
adubs 8 Report post Posted December 11, 2009 I think if you ask anyone who isn't a fan of the Wings which team the NHL is against it wouldn't be the Red Wings. My own personal conspiracy theory has to due with Calgary, Edmonton, and Ottawa losing in the cup finals to three southern teams in consecutive years. Broken 16 381 Report post Posted December 11, 2009 The rule puts too much power in the refs hands imo.
dicksmack 33 Report post Posted December 12, 2009 I saw this play tonight and while it was the wrong call (in that he shouldn't have blown the whistle), I can understand why he did. From the camera angle I saw, which is where the ref was, the puck went under Fleury's pads and looked to be frozen, before the puck then pops into the net. I actually think you'd see a high portion of refs blow the whistle on the same play. Not really comparable to the May non-goal, which I still have no idea how that got screwed up. I can almost always predict which way you will argue a point vis a vis Pens or Crosby--automatic. That was a brutally quick whistle for the Pens.
