I'm sure you got called that at least once or twice this summer when you talked about tough hockey. Not necassarily enforcers but just tougher players. GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted December 22, 2009 Who cares? Unless the news is "______ healthy enough to play", I am not going to care one way or the other. Newbury or Ritola doesn't matter -- neither one is going to win the Wings' games.

thedisappearer 291 Report post Posted December 22, 2009 Also, I'm a grit loving enforcer slappy who hates soft euros. Apparently. Seriously, you are *surprised* people would think this? There's no shame in loving grit or enforcers, and you frequently trash the "soft Euros" on the team. Not even in a sarcasm way. In a 'I'd rather have enforcers than skilled but non-physical Euros' way. I'm not sure if that means you'd trade Zets or Dats for a fighter who could score 20 goals... but seriously... I'm not sure what you'd do there. I think you *might* make that trade.

Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted December 22, 2009 It looks like this move is more so the organization can determine whether he'll be sticking around the Wings next year. Next year he'll have to clear waivers. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20...kris_newbu.html
55fan 5,133 Report post Posted December 22, 2009 (edited) My favorite quotes from Mattias Ritola. This guy is a warrior and feared by many. I don't know about the first one, but that latter was a Kronwall quote. Of course, it is possible that they both said it, but Kronwall said it first. Here's the quote in question: “You (Americans) are crazy about that. You see guys here married at 20 or 21 all the time. It’s not like that in Sweden. Maybe if you are 28 or 30. Say you feel really good about it at 21, then you feel really bad at 26. Now what are you going to do?” There you have it kids, Ritola is the next Kronwall. I've been curious about how Ritola will do on the NHL level. I guess now is a good time to find out. I don't follow the Grifs unless they are playing with the big boys, so this will be interesting. I did like what little I saw of Newbury. Edit to add quote. Edited December 22, 2009 by 55fan
mmamolo 287 Report post Posted December 22, 2009 My point is that, Ritola hasn't earned his spot on this team, or even earn a look on this roster for that matter. Mursak has vastly improved and is doing a phenomenal job. Jeremy Williams, as much as I am not a fan of him, Atleast he shoots the puck and isn't shy about doing so. Why not give Emmerton a shot, because under the same merit he has earned it just as much as Ritola. It sounds like ppl would have wanted what they didnt have in any case. Had Mursak been called up there would have been ppl saying he didn't deserve it and they may as well have called up Ritola. At the end of the day it's a pretty lateral move and they're doing it to get a different look at a different player. They've always done things like this. They want each of their prospects to get a couple of games udner their belt when they can. There are tonnes of soft euro lovers on this site who call people like mewho are advocates of hard nosed, tough hockey knuckle draggers, grit slappies or tell posters like me to go cheer for Philly. This season noone has really said much since we're dressing an enforcer and all the people who were saying that ealrier have all kind of disappeared. Funny how that happened. To say that people weren't ridiculing guys like me for wanting a tougher line up is just ridiculous. This past summer if you brought up the topic of enforcer or even a tougher player you didn't hear the end of it. Personally, I dont think there were many ppl who were absolutely 100% against an enforcer. I think they just wanted an enforcer who could actually play a little bit and that's why when May was signed ppl haven't had a problem with him. I like skilled guys as much as the next but I wasn't and am not opposed to having guys with grit and a willingness to fight in our line up - so long as they can skate and move the puck a little bit. This is how the Wings have been for the better part of the last say 15 years or so. THe Shanahan's, McCarty's etc were guys who could fight when they wanted/needed to but they could also play too. Isandro 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2009 (edited) My guess would be that Ritola gets a little christmas bonus. Considering both Ryno and Axelsson decided to go back to Sweden, he must have had some thoughts about leaving as well. Now he gets a bonus for his decision to stay and fight for a spot in the big league. Edited December 22, 2009 by Isandro

I'll give him the 4 game comparison that Newbury was given. Also, aren't you all the same ones that had Leino as the next superstar? If I remember correctly; Leino is a flop. Yes, before the season I expected Leino to be the next Selanne. My exact words.

Doc Holliday 1,888 Report post Posted December 23, 2009 Didn't you spout that same nonsense when Holland signed Drew Miller? Look how that turned out... Yup. Classic Holland. Ignore your hardworking minor leaguers and pick up a guy that has zero points in 14 games. Lovely. At least he was right about Miller playing for the Wings full time. Though I don't see why it matters.
