If only everyone played like Helm

Even after a half season of watching him, I still can't get over how freaking fast he is. It seriously doesn't even look real sometimes.

I agree. And its not only his top-end, breakaway speed thats the most impressive. The most incredible thing to me is how he plays against the boards in the corners. He can go from skating fast as hell, stop on a dime, fake one way, and then from a dead stop go shooting in the other direction and find open ice. From a pure skating ability aspect, I'm not sure I've seen anything like him in a long time.

That and he completely busts ass every shift, which is encouraging as hell.

Pretty funny quote from the letsgokings forums:

"But O'Donnell....how do you let Helm...who is 5'10....go from laying on the ground to standing up and BURNING YOUR ASS WHEN YOU HAVE INSIDE POSITION."

Haha, yeah, he does that.

He's not 5'10 anymore is he? I thought he was 6' even?

For those that haven't seen it, watch the whole clip above. Not only was Helm solely responsible for the goal, but he is the one who kept the play going by racing there to get to the puck before the goalie.

Wow, in the slo mo replay he looked like it was normal speed! Of course he is not the most talented hockey player in the world, but his speed and work ethic are insane. Only good things can come from this and I hope he has good mentors to work on his hands and play making.

I hope his hands catch up with his feet. If they do he will be an even greater asset then we thought. I'm so excited to watch this kid develop.

I don't know... It's a fine line. I mean, I want the Wings to keep him as long as they can. I don't want him to get so good that he gets too expensive. I'm pretty happy with the way his game is now.

By the time he completely develops into whatever type of player he will be I think we will have the space. I don't see getting more then 30 ever in a season by any means but to have a PKer/checker that can add offence to your team is amazing.

Helm is probably the best skater on the planet right now. Can you guys name anyone who is actually better? Doubt it.

Granted I didn't get to see a whole hell of a lot of him, but Chris Kreider looks like he can skate like a mawf***a.

Interesting article on Helm here in the Free Press - seems some of the other players think one of his problems (and it's not a real bad one) is that he is often going TOO fast and needs to know when to turn on and off his Battlestar Gallactic Viper-esque afterburners of his. I think he will do fine.

He almost has enough goals to have 2 pages on his nhl.com highlights. One more should do it I think.

Oh, and so do his hands still suck?

Pretty much every goal of his has been complete garbage in front of the net. I love them, but they're still garbage goals.

He may score a few skill goals every once in a while, but he's exactly what we need on a team loaded with skill players—a guy that has insane speed and 200% effort that will get the garbage goals and will check his ass off every shift he's on the ice.

At this point he's looking like he'll end up being more of a mix between Cleary and Draper; Draper's speed and defensive ability, Cleary's checking and garbage-goal scoring. Draper's checking, too, I guess.
