Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 Loyalty. If there's one way I'd describe Mike Ilitch I'd say he's loyal and classy to a fault. No way they trade Ozzy unless he asked for the trade. Also, in the end Howard hasn't proven himself to be a winner in the playoffs at the professional level (AHL or NHL), so it'd be crazy to put all of our hopes in him this early in the game. Futhermore, as we've seen with Carey Price and Steve Mason, a great rookie season is no guarantee there won't be significant growing pains as a goalie matures. Turkey 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 I haven't thought about it because it isn't going to happen. Howard is having a great rookie year but he'd be the first to admit he created a lot of those shot opportunities himself by letting out far too many rebounds. One excellent game doesn't mean it's time to go bananas and trade the other guy. Nor is there anything in that article (or any other that I've read) that would imply that a trade is even being contemplated.
55fan 5,133 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 Absolutely no need for a trade. As a die-hard Ozzie fan, I must say that I still have faith in him. As a die-hard Wings fan, I am pleased as punch that Jimmy has been playing so well. Nothing is better to me than having 2 great goalies (which I believe we have) for the cost of one. As long as one of them is hot at all times, it is as near to perfect as a goalie situation can be.
Konnan511 1,736 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 As for a trade, no one would take him, he has no value except for being a veteran with lots of cup experience.

dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 There's no backup I'd rather have than Ozzie. What if Howard plays great up until the 1st round of the playoffs and then chokes? Who do you want to put in for Game 3 when the Wings are down 2-0?
ben_usmc 253 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 although I think Ozzy hasn't played great it would be stupid to get rid of him
Blood On The Ice 15 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 Hmm, i remember once upon a time, when osgood was the regular season starter. Playoffs come along, ozzie sits the bench and Vernon get the net and wins a cup. I actually expect the same thing to happen this year. If the wings can make the playoffs, i think you'll find Ozzie in the crease.
Stiffy 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 The idea of trading Ozzie makes zero sense. We do not have a solid #1 in Howard and who would we trade him for any way, Kyle Quincy? I'm assuming this is just an idea of the OP, not based on any rumor or news, right?

Plus I am expecting him to come back down to earth (like every young goaltender does)

If the wings can make the playoffs, i think you'll find Ozzie in the crease. I really hope this isn't true. This is the perfect year for the wings to switch to Howard as the post-season starter. I had as much faith in Osgood as anyone going into the playoffs last year, and I believe it's possible that he can turn things around again. However, the time will come when Osgood can't do it anymore and he's not getting any younger. The Wings will likely be a 5 to 8 seed in the playoffs which puts less pressure on the goalie than being a top seed. This is the year the wings need to take a chance, see what Howard can do in the playoffs because he has a future here and Osgood doesn't.
Zetts 236 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 (edited) Howard's playing well, but the Wings still need Osgood, at the very least as a back-up. Besides, who would we trade him to, and for what? Any top teams have a goaltender, and any teams struggling to make the playoffs would want someone who can play in the regular season too, to help them make the playoffs. And then who would our backup be? Larsson? That's not a tandem that inspires confidence in me for the playoffs, regardless of how good it looks like they'll be in the future. Edit: By which I mean that Larsson is a relative unknown playing at the NHL level, and we still don't know how Howard will be doing later in the season, as he is a rookie. And of course, we don't know how he can handle the playoffs. Far too much uncertainty. Edited January 8, 2010 by Zetts

Jedi 1,865 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 I think the odds of Ozzie being traded this year are about the same as me winning the lottery, then getting hit by lightning. There's no upside to trading Ozzie. If Howard indeed wins the starting job come playoff time, then who else in the league would be better as a backup than Ozzie? If Howard continues his lights out play, then we've lost nothing. And if Howard stumbles a bit, you've got a 3 time Cup winner to fill in. Factor in Ozzie's low cap hit and it's really a no brainer. He's not going anywhere this season.
Carman 387 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 Unless the rift between Osgood and Babcock is truly thatbad there is no point. Osgood will be fine, he's made a career of being under appreciated until it matters, then being over hyped to hell after actually playing well. He's lived a Jekyell and Hyde type career in regards of fan appreciation and media attention.

RedWingsRox 614 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 Nonsense. Every team needs at least 2 goalies ... if we trade Ozzie, who do we have left ?? Larson ... I don't think so. At Ozzie's salary, 1.5 mill ... and Howie's $700K ... we've got a good thing going.
