Lidstrom won't announce future plans till after season

The 2 year contract doesn't start until he comes back to the NHL. Which is good because while he is developing (Hopefully) when he comes back he'll be stuck at that salary while being in his prime.

I was actually referring to his 2 year contract w/ the KHL.

Bleh, not with it today haha.

Nobody is effective right now so it is a moot point. This season has seen almost no regularity in the playing ability of anyone. It fluctuates game to game. I am tired of all the Leino bashing. He is a Wing right now so support him. If not, then hop on the Penguins bandwagon like the rest of the fair weather fans.

There are plenty of players contributing. Leino is not one of them, hopefully he can pick it up but half way through the season is more than enough time for fans to give a player before he starts getting bashed. He may be a Wing, but he certainly isn't helping the team a whole lot.

huh??? He would have been playing for us if he stayed. That doesn't even make sense. He was a RFA and we signed him to a 2 year deal through arbitration.

Well I definitely remember Hudler saying he didn't want to play for any other NHL team than the Wings and that was a big reason for why he chose the KHL instead.

How does that make sense. The Wings weren't going to trade him and if I remember right they were actually offering him big contracts, maybe up to 4-5 years if I recall correctly.

Lidstrom I think will be back. Probably a 2 year contract at 6 mil. per. He'll be worth it by the end of 2 years, then go on a per year basis after that.

To me he still has a lot left in the tank to be our top defenceman. Unless he doesn't like playing hockey I don't see him retiring a Red Wing just yet. He may want to play in Europe some day but only if he can't play as a top dman in the NHL.

Hudler wanted to be one of the key players and I guess he didn't feel he got that feeling from Detroit this summer. Which is too bad because he would've gotten big minutes this season had he been around.

Tatar, Mursak, Nyqvist, Kindl, Larsson, McCollum, need I go on? Ferraro and a few more of that class are also notable. Right now the Wings have a ton of great prospects in the cupboard.

For sure. Brendan Smith looks promising. 27 points in 19 games sounds good for a defensemen.

Even if Lidstrom does retire (which I have a feeling he might), I don't think his absence is going to be nearly as devastating as most seem to think. Not to say it won't be a huge loss, but I think the Wings will be just fine without him.

No we won't.

Kronwall has been injured a lot, and I don't think Meech and Lebda can fill in either.

This team will have to bring in a top d-man if Lidstrom leaves. We won't be O.K. with what we have now filling in, especially since Rafalski is getting up in age also.

This is what i'm thinking. Lidstrom is still quite the player and a cap hit of 3 million sounds quite fair. (for two years)

He'll probably retire. His play this season will humble him into realizing that he can't perform at a high level anymore.

Can't perform at a high level?

Uh, am I the only one that realizes that Lidstrom has 20 points thus far (which isn't amazing, but isn't bad, considering our offensive woes) and is playing 25+ mins a night, while still being our most defensively-sound player?

Lidstrom can play just fine at the level we need him to play at.

Oooo, I missed this post....

Leino's jock strap does not even want to provide him support, that is how bad he is.... Why don't you donate some money to this site and support it or are you a Penguins fan?

Lids is being selfish by making everyone wait...

This isn't an easy decision. Especially since he's got that whole elbow issue. And if there's one guy that has earned the right to be a little big selfish and being cut some slack, it's Lids.

I'm thinking if we win the cup he'll retire (perfect end to a perfect career). If we don't he'll probably sign a 1 or 2 year deal at reduced cost.

I never said they would be ok with the current roster minus Lidstrom. The Wings will be fine though.

This team has faced worse adversity in the past decade than a declining Lidstrom retiring. Obviously the Wings will shore up the roster, that's a given.

You know, I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but this could be a clever move by Holland in regards to the Hudler situation. I mean, Jim Nill basically told fans to lower expectations that this was more of a rebuilding year. With Lidstrom's contract coming off the books next year, perhaps Holland and Hudler have a gentlemens agreement.

Holland - "Hey Hudler, we can't afford to pay you next season, so go sign a short deal with the KHL, cash in, and get some more experience while you're over there."

Hudler - "Okay boss, see you in a couple of years."

Who knows, we might have a Hudler in his prime and way under paid for his production and scoring value to the team. Perhaps Holland discovered another loop hole in the system. :D

Just like you think the team who has Hossa will go to the SFC every year and lose.

I heard Lidstrom wants to finish his career in Vasteras, but he obviously can still play another season or 2 in the NHL before that. Sure, he hasn't posted great offensive numbers, but he still is solid in the defensive zone. I think the outcome of the season will determine his fate...

Miss Playoff = Lidstrom retirement

Playoff run = Lidstrom extension

Cup Win = Lidstrom retirement

I also don't think that Leino is going anywhere, regardless of what people think. People that suggest trading him fail to realize that he has no trade value, and it would be wasteful and impatient of us to do this. I'm pretty sure Leino will have until the end of next season to impress the wings brass. He can be cut some slack for his rookie year, but if his production isn't up next season, then he won't be resigned.

All of this news makes me think that Holland will be patient (as usual) and make only a minor move at the deadline. I'm thinking he might trade a defenseman/pick for a top 6 forward, but at this point I think that's being pretty ambitious.

As for the injuries, I'm beginning to wonder if we will see a full and healthy line up at all this season.

Do you have a source that proves otherwise? No? I didn't think so.

Red Wings w/ no Hossa = cup

Pittsburgh w/ Hossa = no cup

Red Wings w/ Hossa = no cup

Pittsburgh w/ no Hossa = cup

It's a proven curse.
