Williams & Leino for Ponikarovski

I would much prefer

To Det: Ponikarovsky

To Tor: Cleary and Leino

and jettison Williams in the off season

Bertuzzi/Datsyuk/Holmstrom

Ponikarovsky/Zetterberg/Franzen

Draper/Helm/Eaves

is a very compelling 3-line punch

You would really rather trade away Cleary then Williams? Cleary is clutch in the playoffs and has some grit. Thats just crazy

I would trade Leino for Rosehill before I would take Colton Orr. Rosehill actually looks like a decent hockey player, can skate and has huge hits. Orr is more of a pylon.

It's not that I don't like Cleary, it's that he's not consistent enough offensively to occupy a 2nd line role and he's too expensive to justify a 3rd line role. Ponikarovsky would provide a much greater offensive punch at $2.5M than Cleary does at $2.8M and I think this team would be better off by cutting the combined $5.1M cost of Cleary, Williams and Leino and adding an excellent goal scoring forward with size who might be capable of reaching 70 points on a line with Z and Mule.

I'm a big Cleary fan, but in the overall sense of making a trade to make the team better, this is one of those deals that works for both teams. Detroit wins for the reasons above, Toronto adds a prototypical Burke player in Cleary and another skilled forward to a depleted lineup who may benefit from a change in scenery. Williams heads to the unemployment line, but I don't see Williams sticking around anyway. Fact of the matter is this: in a cap world you can't keep everyone and if I had the choice between Poni and Cleary I take Poni.

we have barely even seen Williams play this year... and when he has played, he has been effective... lets see how he finishes the year before we right him off completely (that may be too much to ask for the I Hate <insert name> Club on Lets Go Wings).

as for the trade propsed, I don't think so

I think Burke would look for something a little more tangible than Leino. Williams is a non-starter.

Probably looking for somebody with modest upside that hasn't disappointed in the pros, like Leino has. Either that or something like a 2nd round pick.

I agree that Williams + Leino isn't a good proposal, but I definitely don't think Ponikarovsky is worth a 2nd. That's just my opinion, though.

If guys like Dominic Moore & Ales Kotalik can fetch 2nd round picks at the deadline, then so can Ponikarovsky.

Put Jeff Finger in there and you have it right. God, what a truely awful signing. Schenns been solid the past 5 games or so, and espicially tonight.

Schenn's been fine for a month or so now. He got a couple games off to sort of "start over" and he's been better. Plus, it doesn't help that he's been paired up with Garnet Exelby.

From teams that don't need to re-stock on prospects like Detroit does, sure. I highly doubt Holland would give up a 2nd for Poni. We gave a 2nd and a 4th for Brad Stuart, who's turned into a pretty big part of the team. I don't see Ponikarovsky having the same impact. Mostly because I don't think he would fit into our system very well.

I thought the trade was supposed to free up salary? Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't Ponikarovsky get paid about as much as Williams and Leino combined anyway?

Is Phaneuf going to be paired with Schenn?

No, Phaneuf was paired up with Beauchemin tonight. Looked like a real solid pairing.

I didn't say Detroit would, but I'm relatively sure somebody will.

Poni's too dumb to fit in with Detroit's system. He's got all kinds of talent, but he's as dumb as a stump. Can never put it all together for any stretch of time.
