egroen 384 Report post Posted February 10, 2010 Zetterberg just is not good on the shootouts. I don't have his stats, if someone wants to post them... But I have to think either Bertuzzi or Franzen would be better.

GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted February 10, 2010 Yeah, I'd also put in Bertuzzi or Franzen. However, this team just stinks at shootouts, period. When our shooters do well, the goalie sucks, and when the goalie does well, the shooters can't make a single goal. Kind of like the team right now. Just can't put it all together at the same time. Flip could be another guy to try.
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted February 10, 2010 Has Datsyuk been legitimately stopped on a shootout attempt this year? It seems like every time he doesn't score its because he misses the net.
Wings_Toledo 233 Report post Posted February 10, 2010 I can understand putting him in the top three because he is one of the best players on the team, but I wouldn't mind seeing Babcock take a chance with someone like, say, Lidstrom for the 3rd or 4th shooter. If for nothing else, at least to surprise the goaltender. On a sidenote: it's great having Williams back for the shootout alone.

Based on that, Draper, Helm and Cleary have never been legitimately stopped on a breakaway.

GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted February 10, 2010 is that a yes then? How do I know? I was just stepping in to make a well timed joke. My guess would be that he has been stopped by someone, as I seem to recollect.

Well this discussion may not tell us whether Datsyuk can be stopped by goalies on the shootout, but it has revealed that Babs needs to put Draper, Helm, and Cleary into the top three shootout slots. Datsyuk rarely gets stopped when he goes for a deke.... but there was a stretch where he shot a lot (last year), and he was stonewalled quite a bit.

Amen to that. After the first two miss the net, the goalie would relax when the 3rd shooter would come expecting him to also miss. That's when Cleary will do that patented slapshot of his. Also, Howard would go into shut down mode and be better, knowing that we would be less likely to score.

Yellowknife Redwing 57 Report post Posted February 10, 2010 (edited) I have absolutely no idea why Babcock stopped using Bertuzzi in the shootout. Next to Pav, he's the only player on our roster that looks consistently dangerous and regularly changes things up to keep the goalie guessing. Bertuzzi has also looked excellent on clean cut breakaways this season. Williams snuck a nice move in tonight, but Hank has just been a disaster for most of the season. If it were up to me our shootout lineup would be Bertuzzi, Datsyuk, Franzen (in that order) for right now. Williams is around 40%, which is pretty darned good for shootouts, so I'm not shocked he got back into the rotation there. I'm all for sparking a changed in shootouts replacing Zetterberg temporarily, with Flipper or Bertuzzi getting the initial nods for that 3rd spot.
55fan 5,133 Report post Posted February 10, 2010 I love Hank, but I agree that he isn't the best choice for shootouts. Eaves, Bert, Flip, Miller even. Heck, put Kronner in. He's pretty good if he gets down low.
