dragonballgtz 273 Report post Posted May 30, 2011 (edited) It's possibly because he is still a top 5 dman in the game too. True but again he has to want it. Him being older now it takes a lot more to stay at that level even for Lidstrom. Is he mentally prepared to go through all that physical training to keep up for another full year or not? RedFlag85 33 Report post Posted May 30, 2011 He'll be back. Anyone saying he's too old, and over paid don't know what they're talking about. You're so used to having the best D-man in the world, you have zero idea of how f*cked we'd be without him.
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted June 2, 2011 I saw this and wasn't sure if it had been posted. I know Lidstrom had said he'd decide before July 1st, but it's actually going to be before the entry draft June 24th. Captain Nicklas Lidstrom, 41, told Holland he will decide before the June 24-25 entry draft whether to return for a 20th season or retire. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2011/06/red_wings_gm_ken_holland_set_t.html

SuperNovaXll 124 Report post Posted June 12, 2011 Up untill about two weeks ago I was pretty sure that Nick would come back. However, the more I read about it... the more I feel that he really might retire. I still think he is coming back for one more year, but Im not as confident as I was a month ago.... BamaWing 37 Report post Posted June 12, 2011 As much as we love him, I think he's over payed. Time to go Nick, and built this franchise with the other Nick. Please tell me one good reason that makes you think he's overpaid?
Doc Holliday 1,888 Report post Posted June 12, 2011 Please tell me one good reason that makes you think he's overpaid? Because he isn't as good as he was in 02. Which means he should be paid league minimum. Duh. 2 LidsFan and Drake_Marcus reacted to this
LeftWinger 5,129 Report post Posted June 12, 2011 The bigger question should be What If? What if he retires? What does Holland do? You know that Nashville is gonna match ANYTHING offered to Weber, so if Lids retires, what is out there that Holland can get to fill in the D? Pretty much every scenario that we as fans have gone over and posted and "blueadamsED" to death included Lidstrom....What if ladies and gentlemen? What if? NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted June 13, 2011 Didn't he say he'll decide by July 1st??? It's June 13th. How is he taking too long? At one point he said he'd let Kenny and Co. know by the draft. So we should know our fate toward the end of next week.
SwedeLundin77 460 Report post Posted June 13, 2011 What if? That's what I want to know. I truly hope he returns one more season, but what if? Do we make a harder drive for some UFA's that we'd otherwise assume their current team would not let slip away? Ehrhoff? Bieksa? Markov? Would we maybe push for Yandle, considering the situation in Phoenix and needing to fill a very very large void with both Lids and Raffi gone? I know i've been attacked regarding RFA situations in the past here, but do you really think we wouldn't try, in this kind of scenario?

Itchin' to go 16 Report post Posted June 13, 2011 I've had a bit of that bad feeling he might retire the last week or so too. Although I have no real reason to feel that way. 1 more year Nick, 1 more cup. Ryan
LeftWinger 5,129 Report post Posted June 13, 2011 (edited) Kenny, listen up, IF Lids retires, then throw the wallet at Weber! Make him an offer he cannot refuse and at the very least, when Nashville matches they got to break their bank in doing so! When the Wings win the Cup next year he can brag to Suter how awesome it is to play in Detroit! Even if they don't, he'll still brag! (then you never know! Weber and Suter together again!) :DREAM: Come on Lids one more year, if only to save us cap space over trying to poach Weber or outbid a team and overpay a lessor player.... Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted June 13, 2011 Kenny, listen up, IF Lids retires, then throw the wallet at Weber! Make him an offer he cannot refuse and at the very least, when Nashville matches they got to break their bank in doing so! Won't happen because it's very likely that Nashville takes Weber to arbitration to prevent scenarios just like the above if he's not signed before the 1st. Of course, he'll likely be signed before the 1st anyhow.

Kenny won't pay 4 first round picks for Weber. In two years those could potentially be lottery picks. A Leafs fan once told me trading future 1sts can bite you in the ass. If Lidstrom retires this summer I'll be deeply, deeply disappointed. Crushed, really. As a fan it would be very difficult to see a man like him go out with so much gas left in the tank. I could be adding to his legacy for the next couple of seasons. Nick will have 40+ years to rest his weary bones once he retires. I hope he doesn't hang his skates up while he can still be a top calibre player (which based on his play this season and the playoffs it's obvious he still is).
