BigTex 1 Report post Posted September 20, 2011 I know it's early in the preseason, but looking at where Homer has been placed it's obvious he's going to be a 4th liner/power play guy if he makes the team. I haven't heard much about him, good or bad. I'm looking for info from anyone who has seen him play this year, how has he looked so far? Do the Wings maybe send him down to GR to start the season to avoid losing one of the younger guys? Babs said the best players would make the team, so far he might be getting outplayed and not make the top group of forwards. Not sure, just wanting opinions on what's been seen so far. 1 hillbillywingsfan reacted to this

P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted September 20, 2011 Can't see that happening. No matter how slow and injured he's been he still scored almost 20 goals last season. These kids and tryouts (Emmerton, Miller, Conner, Brunnström, Johnson...) might be good players, but what Holmström brings to the team is special. Besides this there's also the fact that the organization is also very loyal to veterans who've spent their careers with the team.

ogreslayer 1,069 Report post Posted September 21, 2011 (edited) You can send anyone down before the season starts If teams could do that with players under contract that would be a HUGE loophole, so no it doesn't work like that. Any waiver eligible player has to go through that system to be loaned to the AHL i.e. any player that has a contract with the Wings organization, from an entry level contract like Mursak & Emmerton all the way to someone like Homer. If a player is not under contract with an NHL club but is on a prospect invite to training camp, they of course can be sent back to their junior club at any time. A contract with the big club though means you have to be waived to move off of it & that can only be done during the waiver period which is defined as starting 12 days before the start of the season & ends one day after a team's season ends according to the CBA. For younger players like Mursak & Emmerton, they may be waiver exempt depending on at what age they signed their entry level contract and/or games played at the NHL level but once their exemption is up, they have to go through the waiver process to be sent i.e. loaned to an AHL affiliate. Mursak & Emmerton are out of waiver exemptions meaning they would have to go through waivers to be sent to Grand Rapids & that can only happen once the waiver period begins which is 9/25 this year I believe. If a team could simply send any player signed to a contract down to the AHL prior to the season, or prior to the waiver period more like it, Kenny would send Emmerton down to Grand Rapids before this Sunday & would be in no danger of losing him at all. By the same token, he would have done the same thing with Ritola previously. Can't be done though according to the CBA. So yeah, if the Wings wanted to send Homer to Grand Rapids to start the season, odds are a team with the cap space & looking for a final and unique piece to round out their team would certainly pick him up. LeftWinger 5,130 Report post Posted September 21, 2011 (edited) Uh, he is pretty much the best at what he does, not many people can play in front of the net like him. He wouldn't last one second on waiver's... IMO the only guy in danger is Emmerton if Brunnstrom/Conner/Johnson outshine him. Still not sure Holland would expose Emmerton to waivers, unless he stinks up the ice. There is always a trade of assets to open a roster spot, but even that is limited to just a couple players. And we all know how much "potential" is there... Speaking of waivers and trades (sorry didn't want to start a thread on this) who gets waived or traded out of Buffalo and Washington? Buffalo is currently over $3M over the cap and Washington is just under $900,000 over the cap... Some interesting moves are about to happen... GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted September 21, 2011 I think you answered your own question in the original post: Homer is essentially a PP specialist at this point with probably minimal time at even strength. Still a valuable asset to the team, but he clearly shouldn't be playing top six minutes anymore especially with the Red Wings having other stronger options. No way Holmstrom gets sent down though. He still has an important role to fill on the team.

I was just trying to come up with an excuse...we Texas folk have to stick together...hahah Thanks BHWF, I appreciate you coming to my defense. Worst threaad ever? Maybe, but at least nobody flamed me personally, so at least that's a positive. LOL. I was really more interested in if anyone had seen him play yet this preseason. I've heard so much about everyone else on the team, but nothing at all about Homer. If he's about where he was at the end of last season then probably he'll be with the big club. Just curious if maybe he's experienced any type of decline in his play over the summer. Usually you see articles about everyone on the whole team by now, the lack of a single one about Homer is just plain wierd to me.

Buffalo is currently over $3M over the cap and Washington is just under $900,000 over the cap... Some interesting moves are about to happen... Homer is not going to be waived; even if he's not worthy of a top-six spot anymore (true) he's still huge on the power play. Keeping him as a specialist is better than waiving him - the only conceivable situation he gets waived is if both Brunnstrom and Emmerton play their way into the top six in the preseason AND the Wings plan to only carry 13 forwards, meaning that a Homer vs. Miller competition for the 14th spot wouldn't happen because there IS no 14th spot. Homer stays, and realistically, there's no reason he shouldn't because he's still a decent player. Assuming Homer plays in the bottom six, here are the lines I would like to see: Hudler/Datsyuk/Franzen Filppula/Zetterberg/Bertuzzi Cleary/Helm/Eaves Mursak/Abby/Homer Miller/Emmerton If Brunnstrom makes the team, it's in the top nine, and it probably pushes Mursak out, possibly Abby, and Emmerton off the roster. So in that case, I would like: Hudler/Datsyuk/Franzen Filppula/Zetterberg/Brunnstrom Cleary/Helm/Eaves Homer/Abby/Bertuzzi Miller/Mursak Alternate option: Hudler/Datsyuk/Cleary Filppula/Zetterberg/Franzen Homer/Brunnstrom/Bertuzzi Mursak/Helm/Eaves Miller/Abby If Conner or Johnson make the roster, it's more likely that Miller is gone than Emmerton IMHO. I don't see Holland and Babcock adding another one-dimensional defensive specialist as a spare forward in favor of a solid two-way prospect with good skating, playmaking skills, and hockey sense, who could develop into a good all around second line center like Filppula. Conner is almost certainly headed to Grand Rapids; Johnson is the bigger threat due to his experience and faceoff abilities, however his tryout status reduces that. I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to having Johnson over Miller. I'd rather have Emmerton over Johnson though. But for different reasons.
