Legacy of Ken Holland

I thought this was really well done. All credit to FissionFire on the Wings board at HFboards

http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showthread.php?t=576043

I just thought it would be fun to list all the moves Holland has made while GM of the Red Wings. I'm not going to analyze or grade them but instead leave that up to all the amateur GMs here. He's had some excellent moves' date=' but some awful ones as well. I'm not including draft picks since Jim Nill handles the draft and I'm not sure exactly when he took over that role from Holland. If someone knows specifically let me know and I can add in the drafts before that time.

I plan on keeping this updated as time goes on. I know I've missed some things so if you notice anything missing let me know so I can add it. Also if you have any contract details that I didn't include let me know and I'll add them.

Years begin on July 1st and end on June 30th.

Blue = Trade

Red = Player signing or waiver claim

Orange = Player lost to waivers/expansion/retirement

Green = Coach/Executive signing/firing

Purple = Player claimed off waiver

He became the GM on July 18, 1997.....

Wow I didn't know that Drew Miller was claimed off waivers. And from Tampa Bay no less. What a steal that was.

IIRC, we were DECIMATED by injuries, and needed anyone with NHL experience to plug the hole.

For a fun read, check out the comments in the KuklasKorner story about it.

Wow so Holland gave up:

Petr Sykora, Patrick Sharp, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Mike Green, Thomas Fleischmann, Mike Comrie, and Mike Knuble for ...

Jamie Macoun, Doug Brown, Stefan Liv, and Robert Lang???

thumbdown.gifscared.gifthumbdown.gif

Very good. Holland has made some alrightish moves too. Like building the current team.

It's not that Sykora though. There are two Petr Sykoras. This one has played 12 NHL games during his career.

You're putting this in the absolute worst possible light. Let's go down the list. The Petr Sykora whom Holland traded away was not the one of the same name who went on to be a successful scorer, but was rather the Sykora who lasted a very short time in the league. Sharp, Ponikarovsky, Green and Comrie were draft picks. Saying that Holland "gave them up" does not is not accurate, because the Wings never had those players and, indeed, might not have drafted them had the organization retained those draft selections. Rather, Holland traded away the picks that the teams in question later decided to utilize for the drafting of those players. Fleischmann was used to gain Lang, who was #1 in the league in scoring at the time. Knuble was not good with the Wings, and there was no space for him.

So that's that.

Who'd have thought there would be two players named Petr Sykora? That's wonky. Of course the way I presented it was rather skewed, but it's essentially true.

What was very weird was how Holland traded the pics that became fake Sykora, Comrie, and some other schlub (three draft picks) for Doug Brown, who they just gave up on waivers!

It was an expansion draft. You could only protect so many players, and we lost Dougie when Kenny really didn't want too lose him.

Great list! With the different colors it was tough on the eyes, and made it look 3D

How many GM have a resume like Holland? No one's even close! He's come out ahead on most of his deals, and it's about 80-90% ahead.

Also 8 years later I still think that Lang deal was good, and would do it again. Green hasn't had a good season in 2 years, and who know if he'll ever be the same player. Lang helped us get to the Conference Finals in 2007, giving the rest of the team the confidence they needed, without Yzerman, for the 2008 Cup run.

Aaron Ward was traded for Jiri Hudler, go figure :hehe: Interesting list. Seems that whenever we've dealt away our 1st in big time deals, the player never became anything (sans Mike Green)

Yea, I didn't know the Ward deal turned out to be Hudler.

Yea, again, other than Green (who's been injured for two years), he didn't give up any big names trading his 1st round picks. Maybe he knew the draft those years were weak anyway :sly:

Exactly. Hindsight is always 20/20 but there is no one here who wouldn't deal a prospect and a 1st for guy who is leading the league in scoring.

It's true only in the faintest sense. Holland traded away picks that other teams chose to spend on those players. How the picks were used was entirely in the hands of the those teams.

What was very weird was how Holland traded the pics that became fake Sykora, Comrie, and some other schlub (three draft picks) for Doug Brown, who they just gave up on waivers!

Doug Brown had been lost in the expansion draft, and I suspect Bowman wanted him back. I don't remember when or if he was waived, but he stayed with the team until 2001.

I'm pretty sure if you go through any GM's cupboard you're going to find they missed out on a chance to sign 5 or 7 stars over the years. It doesn't really indicate anything since there's no telling we would have drafted those guys anyway.

Wow, phenomenal list. That looks like a ton of research.

That one made me chuckle a bit, not one of the best signings after all.

Could have been, had his knee (?) not blown out.

At any rate, it's fun to look at the "What ifs?" Imagine if Modano had been healthy, for instance.
