Never, ever, ever wish for a specific opponent, because it will come back to bite you in the ass. The Wings will play whoever they end up playing, and we can worry about how we'll fare against them once we know who they are. I'm not going to start wishing and hoping for any specific team. The Wings are in the playoffs, which is all that matters.

This. I was surprised to see we're only 6 points behind. We could still take #1 if we start getting hot.

Even now, with just 6 games left it's possible. Obviously the Wings would need some help and they'd have to run the table but it is by no means impossible since the Wings and blues square off once more.

Personally, the only downside I ever really see for the Wings in the playoffs is travel. I hate to see them start the playoffs with a west coast team because I think it sets the tone for the entire drive. That alone (not to mention pride, building good habits, entering the playoffs on a roll etc.) is enough reason not to want to drop to 6th. That being said, I almost hope the Wings end up against SJ at some point in these playoffs. I think both of the series the last two years were not nearly as bad as some like to think. In my mind SJ was lucky to be up 3-0 to start last year (hell, even the year before) and I think the Wings dominated games 4-6 with 7 being a toss up. Add in a healthy Franzen and things may have been different. I would relish the opportunity for the Wings to put SJ down.

I swear to you, sixth is better. If it ends up being SJ, then we let them in by handing them a win, and it will be no better than fifth. There is no way we go into Nashville and beat them in the first round. Maybe in the third round when there are injuries as an xfactor.

I wouldn't mind another crack at SJ. Let Nashville-Chicago play each other 1st round.

Yes, let's lose on purpose so we can start on the road where we absolutely suck.

Great thread. A+ really.

I am going to go out on a limb with a really crazy idea. That the team you face, the way systems and players match up... means more than road/home. I actually don't mind the idea of starting on the road, because it is far more likely that the first two games are split historically than the home team takes both. With that it isn't that big of a deal. I really think it just helps for games five and seven.

The thread is about us being able to actually beat Nashville. I don't think we can do it right now. I think in the third round, if they are still in it... we would do better.

At this point:

1st choice - 4th

2nd choice - 6th

3rd choice - 5th

So in short, try your best to win every game but if you're sitting in 5th, just try your best to rest Lids, Dats, Z in the last few games *wink wink*

I have a feeling the league would accuse us of cheating and take a draft pick away from us or something stupid like that. I would just limit their ice time. Maybe play that killer fourth line more and get Gustav some ice.

We could fall to 6th, but anyone thinking the magical switch is gonna flip with the way they've played on the road is delusional. We might beat Dallas, but we'd be crushed in the 2nd round. Something is seriously lacking in this team lately.

Yea I don't think starting on the road is that big a deal either. Just split the first two games, and you're good. After years of starting at home, it always was a lot of pressure to win both Game 1 + 2.

I disagree. I think you can gain momentum and turn it around. I just don't think they can do it against a hungry team, with that good of a defense that Nashville has.

I think the Wings can beat Chicago, Dallas, and Phoenix... They MIGHT be able to beat SJ and LA, but I would rather take LA over SJ... Even though Quick could prob beat this team by himself.

Well, now what do all of you say who insisted, 'Don't pick your poison BS'? It is a real possibility that we'll be in 5th, seriously ... you wouldn't prefer to play whoever is in No. 3 over Nashville? But come to think of it, doesn't really matter, even if we can get past round 1, we'll get our arses kicked in round 2. Let's face it, this team isn't Stanley Cup Finals material.

I'd agree with you if I thought that Vancouver/whoever they would play was any better than us... St Louis could be our second round draw. Something tells me they aren't going to be exprienced enough to make it far. We could beat them. I don't know... I just think that if we are sixth, the WCF would be us and Nashville.

I think we aren't going to be ready for them in round one... but if they play Chicago and Vancouver... we might be able to take them.

At this rate, 6th is exactly where they'll end up.

Something is seriously lacking in this team lately.

Desire, desperation, fear of losing their job for underperfoming. It's a country club down at the Joe.

You do realize that it's been a decade since we won a Cup without Ritola as a Black Ace, right?

For some reason, I believe in the "switch" more this year. The problem with it is that it only lasts a short while, maybe one round. Then, once we start winning, we get overconfident and fall into bad habits again, and find ourselves struggling.

We could beat Dallas. And then? I am afraid that is where the "switch" will short-circuit unless we got a team that had been nicely beaten up for us.

I'm not giving up. Far from it. I think a lot of the lethargy we've seen this year is that they don't feel challenged. They have played many games where they didn't have to give it their all to win. Howard kept them in some. Others were played against teams with injuries when we were healthy.

Our injury bug hit later than usual this season. Now that we've clinched, they are back to "ho-hum" playing. Perhaps there are more like Zetterberg and Cleary who are playing injured and are just playing to keep as healthy as possible, but it seems more like a mental thing.

Only time will tell.

Yeah, not sure the opponent would have mattered. The Red Wings can't score goals. Look at the teams ahead in all four series in the West. The team with much better goaltending is leading the series. Mike Smith maybe isn't on Rinne's level, but he is very good and Chicago's shortcoming isn't lack of offense.

It's easy to play hypothetical pick your poison, but the Red Wings weakness doesn't translate well to playoff success regardless of the opponent.
