Jeff6851 168 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 Since we're all on the topic of Lidstrom, I thought we could discuss another big part of the Red Wings franchise leaving.
Nevermind 363 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 (edited) There should be a 3rd option: It all depends on what Nick does. On a related note, here's what I posted in another thread... John Keating just asked Holmstrom about retirement, and Homer replied angrily "You gotta be kidding, right?". Then he stormed off. Keating's such an idiot for asking it right after elimination. He's not going to get the same polite Nick Lidstrom responses from everyone. Edited April 21, 2012 by Nevermind

St. Michael (the Red Wing) 422 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 I hope he retires but i bet he wants to come back. Hell I thought Draper would have been a better option than him on our bottom six for this year. Homer I've always like ya and respected ya but it's time to move on. 2 Itchin' to go and T-Ruff reacted to this
Guest irishock Report post Posted April 21, 2012 Probably retire, he's not the same PP force he used to be, and even Hudler did a better job at being Holmstrom than Holmstrom. I'd want him in the locker room though, as a special assistant or something.
Guest Crymson Report post Posted April 21, 2012 He'll retire. Holmstrom was a roleplayer who could only be of use on a scoring line. He can't effectively play a checking game, and he's no longer capable of playing on the top two lines. It's time for him to hang up the skates.
WingNut 25 5 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 He's useless at this point considering he's barely used on the PP. That sucks to say but it's my blunt opinion.
Nev 1,085 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 I dunno, he was pretty stoked about the Winter Classic, and I remember a quote at the time from him were he was saying that he was going to use the WC to persuade Nick to come back for another year. Perhaps a more pertinent question is whether Holland will offer him a new contract - or is that a silly question where Kenny and Vets are concerned?

MississippiWing 14 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 Nothing to add that hasn't been said. Lids and Homer's future I think are intertwined. If Lids leave Homer is retiring as well I believe. 1 weGotTheCup89 reacted to this
Wings_Dynasty 267 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 Two words: Kirk Maltby. I would be surprised if he is even offered a contract. And if he is it will be a two-way and he would probably pass and be forced to retire.
sputman 1,268 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 mixed feelings about this. i do think it's time for him to go. he can chip in the odd rebound or tip but that's about it. the sad thing is he has the most snarl on our team. so, it's sad that he'll be leaving but also sad that he has the most snarl on our team. this team is severely lacking snarl, in my opinion. You are right. Homer is not useless, it's just that his value no longer outweighs the costs of having him on the ice. He's still a PP specialist, he still works harder than anyone, and he is the last real agitator we have on the team. I'd hate to see him go, but unless he's an extra forward I don't see room for him. 13dangledangle 968 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 Like everyone around here I love the Holmstrom, has been a force and revolutionized how his position was played forever. Thank you for the many, many memories! 1 lil Wing's fan reacted to this
Dimaline312000 51 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 Holmsy is a great player and though he isn't as old as Liddy he's getting up there, I think some of his decision will be based on what Liddy does but it really wouldn't suprise me either way.
GSBrooks13 204 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 I think it might be a bit of a foced retirement.. Holmstrom is probably still the best at what he does, but that one thing is becoming less and less valuable as a result of his game sliding in other areas. Also should mention the fact that he used to be effective enough that it outweighed the reputation calls. At this point the Wings can still put Bertuzzi or Franzen in front of the net and be just as effective..
Hockeymom1960 5,107 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 (edited) I think it will depend on Lidstrom and Homer's body. It will be sad when he retires because there is definitely no one to replace him and the way he plays the game. How many goals did he rob from other players, especially Lids I wonder? beachwing 426 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 Maybe if the NHL would let him do his job he could be an asset again for us. Maybe if the NHL would let him do his job he could be an asset again for us.

Hairy Lime 234 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 Nothing to add that hasn't been said. Lids and Homer's future I think are intertwined. If Lids leave Homer is retiring as well I believe. So does this mean that we should all hope that Lidstrom retires? Well, whatever Lidstrom decides, although I don't think it will be the decision we all want to hear, Homer should just hang 'em up. If Holland offers him a contact ...
McAwesome 754 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 As much as I appreciate his contributions to the franchise, and the way in which he revolutionized the role of net-front presence, it is sadly time for him to hang up the skates and decide what he will do next. I just hope that Holland doesn't offer him a contract because you know he still has the desire, he has just become more of a liability than an asset with his body breaking down and his reputation costing us goals and scoring chances. Red Crazy 201 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 I am going to say that he will want to play again. However, Holland may have other plans. 13th forward.

Holmstrom96 347 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 I love Homer, but he is just not effective anymore. I would rather see young blood.
Jimmy Jazz 3 Report post Posted April 21, 2012 Whether Homer decides to retire or not is one thing but it's time for the Wings to part ways. Infusion some younger blood, it's got to happen (and it's somewhat overdue) into the team.
