Concerned - we might not make it in to the playoffs

For some of us, it's not so much rooting against our team as being ok with them missing the playoffs for the greater good of the team. Getting a higher pick in not just the 1st round, but for the other 6 as well would do us some good. Getting a top 10-15 pick could be huge this year, and then 40-45 instead of the usual 25 and 55.

That is just silly. The difference in drafting between 16th and 17th is not going to be huge. We should always prefer success now to potential success...maybe....in a few years...if we draft the right guy.

It will be exciting! We get to see how our young guys and new leadership respond to this type of adversity.

Detroit Red Masochists.

I sometimes hope my children fail at things so they can realize the path they are taking is not going to lead to long term success. I also hold out hope that I am wrong. I hope I am wrong about the direction the Wings are headed, but it is hard for me to see them trending any direction than down right now. This trend has been going on since they lost to the Pens in the Cup finals without any discernable plan to change the trend. Like I said...hope I am wrong

You are wrong. At the mid point of the season last year they were #1 in the entire league. But that fact doesn't fit your story. Carry on...

I tend to think it would actually be BETTER in the long run were this team to miss the postseason, the record be damned. Missing the postseason means that heads would actually roll for a change. I think. Maybe.

I tend to agree.

But, like zombo said, Holland would just blame it on injuries.

And we lost in the first round. In five games. To the Predators.

Big picture. We're trending downwards.

Playoffs or not, I would highly consider trading 40, 55, and 93 if you can. They're only going to get older and slower moving forward, unfortunately. Move them while they still have value. Decide between 14 and 21, one stays one gets moved. Sign 35 to no more than 2 years. DO SOMETHING DRASTIC..in a good way.

WAAAAIIIIIT a second..... So you're trying to tell me that players actually get older with the passing of time? If its only those three players who are going to get older, does that mean everyone else stays the same age? Or even get younger?! Can't wait!

When we were #1 Jimmeh and Pav were playing absolutely lights out. They both got injured, they both came back, and neither was anywhere near close to their pre-injury form. Before they got injured we were playing like genuine contenders. After they came back we were the team that lost in 5.

Thats not to say I disagree with your assessment that we're generally trending downwards - we've lost so many good players in such a short space that we can't not. But last year could have been so much more.

Rooting for one's team to lose says more about the fan than the team.

Aw c'mon, you telling me that when the Lions were 0-15, you weren't rooting for Green Bay in that final game?

ok. Trend is not always a straight line. They could go on a 10 game win streak to end the season and be second in points but that does not change the overall trend. Carry on....

We will make it..6th, 7th or 8th...it doesn't matter.

We are finally underdogs.

Z = 210 overall pick

Dats= 171st

Franzen= 97th

Vs

Toews =3rd

Kane =1st

Hossa= 12th

Movie guy voice:

"This spring, get ready to watch a 171st late round pick rotate everyone in the team drafted earlier than he was, including a drunk rebellious 1st round pick. Watch as a very serious 3rd round pick captain lose his s*** when a 210th pick leads his team through adversity and mediocrity. A hockey player picked in the 97the round will wake up from his 48 game slumber and score unbelievable goals probably and preferably when the 12th round acquisition is lined up with his 1st and 3rd round teammates. As Buffer would famously say at the staty of every fight...Let's get ready to rumbbbbbbbbbllllleeeee!"

I made this vid last year. Get pumped this year by watching it!!!!

At this point, I'd honestly rather not make the playoffs. In fact, I think I'd be okay if we lost the rest of the games. The lower we are in the standings, the better. We need higher draft picks more than we need a 1st round playoff exit right now.

Yeah because finishing 9th or 10th in the West will be SO MUCH BETTER than 7th or 8th (which we have a legit shot to do)

The continuation of making the playoffs, and money from the first round will do more then 2-3 more spots in a draft.

Too late to tank for a top 5 pick in all reality.

At least in my opinion. I feel we can attract free agents better if we make the playoffs even if we lose, rather then if we miss.

Heck, no. What am embarrassment that year was for the Lions, the city, and its fans. Huge difference between 1-15 and 0-16.

Rooting for one's team to lose is also rooting for its players to lose. I would never wish that upon Datsyuk, Z, or any of the Wings.

None of the Wings management team needs a superficial slap on the wrist, an "ah-hah!" moment, or some Facts of Life-Mrs. Garrison revelation to improve the team. Detroit is rebuilding on the fly. The team generally drafts well with late picks.

1. Make the playoffs

2. Draft well

3. Rinse, repeat

Draft well? Nill admitted that drafting Pavel wasn't some stroke of drafting acumen, but in fact dumb luck. As Mickey says 5 times a game 'Sometimes its better to be lucky then to be good'. For every gem you give me I can show you how other teams have done the same, maybe not with 6th or 7th round picks, but with picks after the 2nd round (which just about every scout will admit anything after the 60th pick is a crap shoot).

I didn't say it was a science. Sometimes you get lucky. Sometimes luck gets you.

http://www.coppernblue.com/2012/2/8/2202287/ken-hollands-draft-success

This isn't any new data but it shows the odds you have of drafting a successful player based on your position in the draft between Holland's first year as GM until 2005. To be considered a top player in this chart you have to play at least 200 NHL games with a PPG average at or above .5 PPG.

The second chart is Holland/Nill's success in the draft compared to the rest of the league.

Basically what it shows is that during that time period the Wings were better than the league average in every single slot, but more than twice as likely to land a top player past the 101st pick in the draft. They were also an astounding 7 times better than the league average drafting between 51 and 100.

Some of that might be luck, but 7 times better has to have some skill involved as well. Credit where credit is due, our management team's preference of skill over being NHL ready has paid dividends for this team over the years.

Once is an accident. Twice is a coincidence. Three times is a trend.

Ugh, St. Louis, San Jose, and Chicago our next three games. Not looking good. If we don't play any better than we have been the last few games we might be in a world of hurt really soon.

Very true but tonight we need some help from the Hawks. Also help from The Kings, Avs, and Flames.

Agreed. Kinda sad that our season pretty much rests on getting help from four other teams. Not exactly what I was hoping for coming into this season.

True. And I definitely acknowledge that Nick's injury and Helm's absence cost us dearly. I guess I wish someone - or maybe the team as a whole - had stepped up to compensate.

JImmah has been hot since the midway point.

Datsyuk wants Abby on his line, but sometimes we need some Euro Twin powers to activate.

Defense seems to change every game. Forwards are testing ones coming up and ones going down.

We need to sit and think about some chemistry here. Also need to find some finishers to put all these passes in the net.
