#RedWings have put D Brendan Smith on IR (injured in fight at EDM), called up Adam Almqvist to play Monday at Winnipeg.

Curious to see Almquist, kinda wish it was Ouellet tho.  He played great that first game and if given an extended period of time i think he could steal lashoffs spot.

I am ashamed at my reaction to this.

I don't ever want to see anyone, especially one of our guys, hurt. But...Smith needs to get his head right. I'm excited to see what Almquist can do.

As long as he is the only change to the lineup I'm good with it

It sucks that Smith is out (his struggles aside), but I'm very excited to see AA finally get a shot to play. I remember back when he was leading scorer for all F/D as a defenseman in J20. Hopefully he gets used on the PP as well, see how well his QB vision really is.

I would have rather seen ouellet up over almquist... ouellet has a better defensive game.

Is there a kickstarter campaign for Jakub Kindl to never play another NHL game?

Not ashamed to say don't know much about him, anybody got a scouting report on Almqvist? What type of player is he.

"He usually shows up when the game is over and tries to be the hero. Puts his cape on and goes and flies out there." ~ Franzen

I'm hoping Almqvist magically becomes that elite Rafalski-esqe puck-moving defenseman we so badly need. And that he becomes that guy in the span of one game.

Did Smith get hurt in the fight at the end? Unfortunate and unnecessary for him if so.

BUT.

I've been calling for Almqvist to get a shot and I'm glad he gets his opportunity. Can he be worse defensively than Smith? Doubtful. Can he move the puck better than Smith? Probable. Hope he does well and gets some PP time.

Good puck-moving d-man, his size and defensive play are the most common negatives mentioned.

I think so, went back and watched the fight, he landed really hard on his left shoulder with Acton landing on top of him.  After he got up he reached for his shoulder with his right hand.  That sucks, I never wish injury on anyone unless their names contain Claude Lemieux or Matt Cooke.
