Things are going great for the NHL from a business perspective.

How great will be revealed in the next couple of days at the board of governors meeting in Pebble Beach, Calif. The board is expected to approve the league's new television deal with Rogers and get briefed on the approximate salary cap for next season.

The $5.2-billion, 12-year deal the NHL struck with Rogers for exclusive national TV rights in Canada needs approval from the board of governors before it goes into effect for next season. Given the financial windfall it represents for the league, there's no real danger that it doesn't pass.

Revenue from that contract won't factor in until next year, but commissioner Gary Bettman said last month in Toronto that "it's fair to say" the NHL is over the US$3.3-billion mark from the last full season.

Anyone still not mad we didn't land Suter? Sure, two years ago that contract looked like it would handcuff any team out there, but if the cap is going up to $71.1M next season, then when the NHL gets its lucrative TV deal and it goes up to $80M, Minnesota will be sitting pretty with BOTH of those contracts. I know Suter chose family and I get it, but I for one, really wish we could have got him...

Hopefully, Phaneuf makes into free angecy would love him on the DetroitRedWings. Guy is a beast, defensive reliable and if needed he can play QB on the PP very well with a nice shot.

as for Suter there is nothing Kenny could have done here, his girlfriend wanted to go home and he wanted to play with Parise so it was a done deal. I said back then that the contract isn't horrible and vera creative structured, Suter is worth of that a Norris candidate year in and year out. The bad thing is, aside from Vanek and Phaneuf this UFA class is looking very disappointing,

This is the thing - firstly we aren't going to have that many roster spots open.

Secondly, there aren't going to be many good players available, except via trade. Teams lock up their best players on long term contracts now. The result is that the mid-level free agents who last summer were getting $5-6M are now going to be getting $7-8M.

The real winners here are teams like Chicago and Pittsburgh who've got all their core talent locked up on long term cap friendly deals. They'll have no problems continuing to re-sign their bridge players or fill gaps with whichever FA's become available.

In terms of forwards, who can play center Statsny might be a nice alternative http://capgeek.com/free-agents/?year_id=2014&team_id=-1&position_id=F&fa_type_id=2, Vanek for sure won't be worth the caphit he'll be demanding.

Given this pool, playing the young guns and let them develope might be the smart thing to do. I just pray that Kenny is going to stay away from signing Heatley...

The long-term contracts have really killed the excitement of free agency and the trade deadline. But we are building a new core internally. There may not be superstars out there but there are guys who could help round out a team. Namely, more effective veterans than Cleary and Sammy.

If this is true, Kenny will have zero cap trouble next year.

The problem is though, he needs to manage the roster so there's room next year for Sheahan, Ferraro, Callahan, and Almquist, room the following year for Jurco and Mrazek, and room in 2015-16 for Sproul, Ouelett, Jarnkrok and Pulkinnen. Assuming they all make the transition.

Then we have Mantha, who could make the team out of camp next fall, or anytime after that.

Kenny would have the money to sign (for example) Stastny/Vanek/Gaborik/Callahan/Phaneuf, whatever. But these guys will all want long term deals and unless they buy out Mule/Weiss, and trade someone like Andersson, there's going to be a log-jam up front that will make this year seem like a dream.

Going to be good for us one way or another, no more dead weight and the only roster issues will be getting more kids in the line-up. We'll also have the flexibility to go after a big name should we need too.

I don't get the excitement of the cap increasing so drastically over the next couple seasons. We would definitely benefit much more with a similar cap to the current $64.3 mil, maybe an increase of 2-3 mil to 66-67 mil. Look at our list of UFA's we can potentially get rid of after this season.

Samuelsson - $3 mil

Bertuzzi - $2.075 mil

Cleary - $1.75 mil

Eaves - $1.2 mil

Quincey - $3.775 mil

Gustavsson - $1.5 mil

A grand total of $18.8 mil "potentially" coming off the books. Chances are we will resign 2 or 3 of them, I'm thinking Alfredsson at a slightly lower cap hit (approx. $4.5 mil) and Gustavsson at a slightly higher cap hit (approx. $2.25mil). With the raises that we've given / will give to players like Datsyuk, Ericsson, Tatar (approx. $1.25 mil) and DeKeyser (approx. $3.25 mil) we still have enough cap space to sign a few of our RFA's, Sheahan (approx. $1 mil), Ferraro (approx. $0.9 mil), Glendenning (approx. $0.75 mil), and Almquist (approx. $0.9 mil).

I think a lineup something like this is an improvement over this years roster. Just my opinion...

I agree. It always seems like the cap goes up when the Wings don't really need it to (next year) and isn't high enough when they need it the most (2009). All the increased cap will do is make it easier for teams like Minnesota to add another mega-contract for a guy like Vanek or the Hawks to keep stacking the core, etc.

A lower cap would benifit the Wings by not helping out the other teams.

As a side note: what are they going to do with Monster? Money won't be an issue. Neither will his performance. Term's going to be a problem. He'll be looking for at least a two year deal, and this will be a problem. Mrazek would be out of waiver options in the second year of Monster's contract.

Ideally, the Wings sign their back-up for one year. That way there will be a spot for Mrazek in 2015-16.

This CBA term is 10 years with an opt out by either side after 8 years, so there can't be one before then.

Assuming Bettman is still commissioner the next NHL lockout will be in 8 years.

I'm good with this. Only thing is you can use the buyout on tootoo if you aren't using it elsewhere.

I'd be a huge proponent of trading our first this year for a 1st next year. With those 2 firsts and other assets we could move right up in the draft and get that 1C we need so desperately in the system. We will be seeing CRAZY prices in UFA and its better just to build from within so we don't get shafted by the cap again and have kids in GR that have earned a spot but can't crack the roster due to lack of cap/roster space.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't the owners lock the players out and demand that the CBA be re-opened before the opt out date.

I'd rather not lose Alfredsson for some rookie who may or may not be good. You can't go too young, and some of those players won't make the NHL full-time (Ferraro).

I'd like to bring up some young D (Almqvist) and another forwars, but we're going to be a young team as it is. Trade a few for a player in his prime maybe. We seem to have more great prospects than can feasibly make the team without making us Edmonton.
