Smite 399 Report post Posted April 1, 2014 All wings players back from injury *rolls eyes * z is no where near returning and I doubt Weiss is back. Clearly a joke Cleary is on the mend. according to Malik: Red Wings forward Daniel Cleary is…on the road to recovery?I've continued to update the practice post Paul started this morning with the usual practice day's worth of Red Wings news, but the strangest injury update didn't come in the form of anything regarding Stephen Weiss's status (proclaimed himself able to skate with the team on Friday, didn't skate with the team today), Jonathan Ericsson's status (recovering from a broken finger) or Henrik Zetterberg (on track to return late in some sort of first-round playoff scenario?), nor which players the Boston Bruins may sit tomorrow (instead, it's all about "message-sending"). The strangest news came in the form of one Daniel Cleary stating that he'd had reaction to an injection of synvisc, the same artifical knee lubricant that Tomas Holmstrom leaned upon during the latter years of his career, and that Cleary is now on the road to recovery, as Fox Sports Detroit's Dana Wakiji noted:

I don't want to face the Bruins or Penguins either, but if the Wings get in, they are going to play one of those teams. Catching the Flyers is irrelevant because the Wings can't do any better than a wild-card unless the Canadiens or Lightning really tank.

Philly is in the 3rd guaranteed spot in the Metro division which means nothing to the Wings. To move out of a wild card spot & into a guaranteed one within their division (Atlantic), the Wings would need to catch Tampa Bay who are 7 points ahead or Montreal at 9 points. I like our chances against the pens then bruins I would say. Idk we shall see, We have beat the bruins twice this season. wings4thecup06 504 Report post Posted April 1, 2014 The last couple of posts really just seriously explain why the whole new playoff format is just a load of bs. Seriously. Everyone knew what happened, and it was clear and obvious. Division winner top 3 seeds, and the rest battle it out for 4-8. Top plays bottom, and then re-seeding in subsequent rounds. How simple yet effective? It just drives me insane that this league seems to seriously just ruin every good thing that comes about. Sorry. Rant over. 4 wings87, Bully76, 13dangledangle and 1 other reacted to this

Until I actually sat down and literally THOUGHT about how the hell it worked, I hadn't got a clue. It's mental Ya if they want wild cards and inter division play, it should be 3 top seeds and two wild cards per division, the two wild cards play a single elimination, or best 2 out of 3, the winner faces the top seed in the division. But hey what do I know I'm just a fan, I don't make millions of dollars to figure these things out... 1 wings87 reacted to this
ogreslayer 1,069 Report post Posted April 1, 2014 So here's a mind bender for everyone: Say the Wings take the 7th spot & cross over to the Metro to play the Pens. They take the series, stay in the Metro & beat the winner of the Rangers/Flyers series. Are the Wings not then the champs of the Metro division for 2013-14? Say C'Bus pulls the same feat in the Atlantic & you now have a Metro team as the Atlantic division champ. Do each hang a banner as the champions of the opposite division at the start of the next season? Part of me thinks that Gary does stuff like this on purpose just to completely troll fans. Mickey was actually asking the same question last week. The short answer, they will be the champ of that division, but they can't hang a banner for it cause they aren't in the division

ogreslayer 1,069 Report post Posted April 1, 2014 Am I mistaken in the fact that Division winners were awarded on the basis of winning the division in the regular season and not the playoffs? Now that they're using a divisional playoff system, more than likely not. The winner to come out of the divisional rounds (1 & 2) will probably be considered the division champion, just like the winners of round 3 of the playoffs are considered conference champs. Carry on. Wait... you're not going to say anything about it? I'm growing to like the new playoff format. Promotes divisional rivalries, but I think also compromises enough to minimize the chance of any team getting screwed out of a spot. The divisional champion thing, if they are actually doing that, just seems wierd. That shoud stay a regular season thing. The regular season is meaningless enough as it is, there needs to be something to it other than just making the playoffs. Back on topic though; it really says something about the severity of our injuries this year that apparently everyone here thought that any kind of April Fool's prank on the subject would be in poor taste. ogreslayer 1,069 Report post Posted April 1, 2014 Division titles have always been decided in the regular season. They're not going to change that. Last I'll post on this topic here... Division champs were determined by who won the divisional playoff rounds between 1982 & when the league switched to conference level playoffs in 1994. So on the injury front, it sounds like Cleary is getting over the negative reaction he had to the injections he was getting in his knee. That's good right? Right? wings4thecup06 504 Report post Posted April 1, 2014 Well: 1) The whole 'crossing over' to the other division within your conference completely mitigates the entire point of having divisions in the first place. What's the point in competing for a spot within that division if only to be told you're playing against the other division? 2) How you could potentially get screwed by the wild card. If you're in a wild card spot and you're 'division' leaders are way ahead, you could have potentially more points than anyone in the other division and still be stuck in the wild card spot. Under the old system, you could get anywhere from 4-8 if you didn't win the division, and leapfrog teams from the entire conference. Now you can only leapfrog your own division. Might as well not bother having a conference 3) What the hell was wrong with the old system?
