All Purpose "Ovechkin is Awesome" Thread

Meh, I've actually done this before and have had other things go awry with alarms. I understand there's no excuse, especially for a captain, but these things do happen. He might get fired for this in the non-sports world if he was at a replaceable position, like something blue-collar, entry-level, or minimum wage. But when you're important enough/high enough in your company that is certainly not the case. And Ovie has a lot of importance within his organization.

Replace "Best Player On Team" with "Top Broker In Firm". Neither is going to fired for being late. They are the face of their business.

Yeah I agree, it happens. I'm just making the point that Ovie isn't your ideal captain. He's the best player for sure. Irreplaceable for sure.

But your best player necessarily doesn't equate to being the best leader and best candidate for captaincy (getting a bit off topic). I've never thought of Ovie as a "captain" material type of player. Imo he doesn't meet a lot of requirements of a true captain. Sure I guess he meets the "crazy good a** player quality" and off ice charity in the community but that's not all there is to it. Being late sure as h*** isn't!

Maybe I have some bias because as a Wings fan, our leadership quality is just ridiculously awesome and it might be unfair to compare Ovie to it. Who knows.

No one gets fired for being late once. Maybe if you're just starting at a job. Hell, I've been late so often that my 11am shift now officially starts at around 1-ish.

Do we really know if this was his first time?

All we know is Trotz benched him for being late. For all we know it could have been a few times and Trotz wanted to send a message.

Either way in this situation what happened was this - Ovie was late. Trotz benched him.

Personally I think it's kind of funny because Ovie WOULD be late. The guys a troll. That's what makes him such a fun player to follow in games and interviews/all star games.

I love Ovie because he's really good, and he doesn't care about playing hockey the Canadian way. Which drives people NUTS. Take the hatred that most people felt for Subban (prior to his big money donation) and multiply that by 100 and you'll only just approach the amount of shade cast on Alex Ovechkin from the Canadian faithful. Love it.

What's the canadian way? Crosby's way? Or Toews? Or Stamkos? or Gretzky? Howe? Orr? Lindros?

So many different styles IDK which one you're referring to!

Don Cherry's way, of course. He's the biggest proponent of the Canadian way. Not surprisingly, he's one of Ovie's biggest critics. Do your self a favor and watch all the Coach's Corners about Ovie's goal celebrations. Cherry starts out being his normal, borish, blowhard, self. And then, when it finally starts to dawn on him that neither Ovie, nor anyone else, cares what he thinks, it's like he's finally confronted with his own irrelevance. Afterward he starts backpedaling like you wouldn't believe.

At first he's all, "Alex, you're an idiot and somebody's gonna get you, and you're acting like a soccer player, and blah, blah, blah". And then Ovie and everybody else laughs at him. And then he's like "Alex, you're a great player, and I know you're just having fun, but what if you were that other team's goalie? How would you feel? You're a role model".

He's a ******.

*puts on the tinfoil*

What if the alarm clock was an inside job? Picture this, Trotz wants to send a message to his young players about everyone being held accountable. So he pulls his captain into his office and together they hatch a clever ruse. Ovie shows up late "on accident" because of his "darn alarm clock". Now Trotz can bench the best player in the world and by example say to the rest of the team "See what happens when you stay out late/don't show up on time!". No one gets hurt, the team has learned a valuable lesson, and no one is the wiser

It's plausible. But I just don't see it. For one, Trotz never seemed that smart to me. It would take a genius to pull of a stunt like that. Who do you think he is, Mike Babcock?

Reminds me of the story where Bowman was coaching the Habs and they were on a road trip. Curfew was 11PM or something. He gave a clean hockey stick to the doorman at the hotel and told him to ask anyone coming in after 11 that looked like a hockey player for an autograph. The next morning at practice, after collecting the stick, he walked into the dressing room and threw it in the middle of the floor. Or something like that. Anyway, that's genius.

That's amazingly smart, and somehow, this is the first time I've heard this.

Way behind the goal line.

BlueDigitalGnu.gif

That's a nice shot and all, but it's not like his stick was behind the goal line. On that note, I really wish someone would go over this with our team (or at the very least the D) The lane you are shooting in isn't the one you are looking at, it's the one from where your stick blade is. From 60 ft out a difference of about 3o might be the difference between getting the shot through or going into the defender's shin pads (I'm looking at you Ericsson)

Wow. I can't believe Ericsson has never learned this fact. How the heck does he have a spot on this team when he lacks this basic knowledge of physics? Buy him out already.

I agree. He is definitely not the typical Canadian star. He has a lot of attitude.

Ovie has almost 500 goals. He has a super legit shot of going by Gretzky. How can people not like that?

I'd say he has a 10% shot at best.

He'd need to average 50 goals for the next 8 seasons. Nobody has done that in their 30's, even back in the 1980's. Certainly isn't happening nowadays.

This but he has a legit chance of hitting 800 goals. 30 goals for the next 10 years is doable for him. He might even pull a Jagr and play until he's 43.
