Motor City Mullets 303 Report post Posted June 4, 2024 Being a hardass when it comes to the game is one thing - being a dick off the ice is another...Babs crossed the line too often. Now Bowman on the other hand...I'm certain he wasn't a saint either.

Something like that. I'm fine with coaches using mind games, intimdation, gaslighting, whatever, on players, so long as nothing illegal happens. That's their job. Get the most out of their players. Whether thats by good cop or bad cop, i dont care. Just do whats effective. But when you read the article and it talks about him doing the same stuff to staff... that's where he starts to decend into bad guy territory for me. Its not his job to "coach" the staff. He's probably a perfectionist and cant help himself. Probably "coached" his family too. Every coach is going to have players that think hes a dick, i dont put too much stock into that. Comes with the territory. But it does seem that Babs greatly prefered fear tactics over hugs n kisses. Maybe more so than most coaches.

Just a total ****** move. He got fired for being a weirdo. Not for being a bad coach. He's the equivalent of a pedo in the hockey world. 1 kipwinger reacted to this

And it sends the message that Babs is monitoring what the player does in their personal life, and that Babs will find your dirty laundry one way or another (so straighten up). Is it a totally weird thing to do for most people? Absolutely. But that's the other angle to it, besides the message it sends... strange and intusive requests/questions are often employed to size people up. Are you a weak-willed person who is going to immediately submit to something you know crosses the line? Are you someone with strong character who is going to recognize whats happening is unfair and become offended and refuse? Or do you become nervous and meekly refuse, showing you have something to hide? It's the same reason Yzerman was asking draft eligible players weird questions about weed and stuff. Babs/Yzerman don't actually care (unless your dumb enough to reveal something damning) they want to see how you react, to figure out what kind of person/player you are. Babs was mutually terminated for abusing his power to invade a players privacy. But what's lost on many, is that it was meant to test the player, and/or demonstrate his own power, not to see his actual photos.

Insults to troops - builds team work through a common objective to overcome adversity to earn the SDI's respect. Gives the troops nicknames - builds teamwork by giving the troops "call signs" that they end up using as identification. Trains the troops by action and is knee deep in all the drills - shows them that he can still do everything they do even though he's 25 years their senior. Praises them once they accomplish a goal - "Private Pyle, you are definitely born again HARD" - shows the troops hard work leads to a reward and all the harassment had a purpose. This is what a good leader does to show his guys who's in charge without crossing the line. "If it weren't for dickheads like you, there wouldn't be any thievery in this world." That's my favorite line in the movie. So many good lines to live life by in this movie.
