kliq 3,755 Report post Posted February 13, 2020 I was messing around with what the roster could look like next year, and this is what I came up assuming we don't sign any UFA's. What does everyone think? IMO, if you give us a new coach (Likely Gallant), and roll with this roster, I think we are significantly better then this year. Essentially, I don't re-sign any of our UFA's, I bring up Svech & Ras, trade Glendening, Helm, and Erne, and I let Perlini & Ehn walk (or sign them and send them down). Obviously in this hypothetical scenario we have to win the lottery which really helps. I'd like to see Veleno up as well, but I dont think he will be ready. Ras I did bring up, but I'm on the fence with him, worst case if he isnt ready, I keep Erne or put Smith there and bring up someone else from GR to fill that last roster spot. Line 1 Line 2 Line 3 Line 4 LW Tyler Bertuzzi Alexis Lafrenière Robby Fabbri Justin Abdelkader C Dylan Larkin Valtteri Filppula Andreas Athanasiou Frans Nielsen RW Anthony Mantha Filip Zadina Evgeny Svechnikov Michael Rasmussen DP 1 DP 2 DP 3 Goalies LD Filip Hronek Patrik Nemeth Dennis Cholowski Jonathan Bernier RD Dan DeKeyser Moritz Seider Gustav Lindström Filip Larsson or UFA Healthy Scratches: Hirose Bowey Smith I think our biggest hole is in the 2C spot, Filppula is simply not a top 6 forward anymore. I think our top line is very good, and I think adding Lafrenière completely changes the second line on the wing (though I worry they may be pushed around). Our 3rd line looks pretty good as well as long as AA can handle 3C, and our 4th is what it is. As for the pairings, I like our 1st pair, 2nd is ok but all depends on how Seider progresses, and I like the youth on our 3rd. A lot of kids on D, but it can't be worse the this year. Maybe Yzerman makes a splash and signs a Krug or another UFA. Thoughts? 1 Dabura reacted to this

marcaractac 3,963 Report post Posted February 13, 2020 (edited) We win draft lottery: Lafreniere-Larkin-Mantha Bert-Flip-Zadina Fabbri-Ras-AA/Puljujarvi Smith-disney.com-Abby Ehn, Hirose, and Svech fight for two spots Seider-Hronek Dekeyser-Bowey Nemeth-Lindstrom Hicketts Bernier UFA If we don't get Lafreniere, whoever we do draft won't be on the roster until 21/22. So Bert moves up, Fabbri moves up, Hirose on the third line, and perhaps Svech as an extra. Veleno makes the team later in the season with a strong start in the AHL. Flip becomes deadline trade bait and Ras/Veleno round out middle 6 centers. Cholowski also starts in the AHL to try and round out his game at the pro level. No NHL call up until he is ready to stick. The 91 of Ryans 3,015 Report post Posted February 13, 2020 We don't win lottery. Pick 2nd. Take Stutzle. He plays in 21-22. I don't know who Yzer-dude jettisons at the deadline but we all know who won't be coming back. Since it's clear some of you guys have already lit the fantasy candle, it's bold prediction time: Yzerman makes a big kahuna move and overpays for Pietrangello 9.5 x 7. HERE ME OUT: Seider needs someone to guide him in his formative years and I'll be fuked if it's going to be DeKeyser. And I think Alex is the type of big brain D that will still be provide excellent value at 35+. Anyway, it's less likely than drafting Lafreniere but more likely than Veleno being 2C and trading 7 guys before October. Bertuzzi - Larkin - Mantha Athanasiou - Filpulla - Zadina Fabbri - Rasmussen - Smith Erne - Glendenning - Abdlekader Nielsen/Svechnikov DeKeyser - Hronek Pietrangello - Seider Nemeth - Lindstrom Bowey Bernier Halak/Howard I'm far more interested in the 2021-22 roster. 1 Dabura reacted to this

Fair enough. We do need a real veteran D man to mentor Seider though. Not sure how that's going to happen. I can see Yzerman leaving Moritz in GRs until it does though. 1 Dabura reacted to this

I think Seider has the raw skill / ability and hockey IQ to be an elite defenseman regardless. He just needs solid veterans around to lead him off the ice, in the gym. Between Horcoff, Cleary, Kronwall, Nemeth, Glendening, etc. I think he'll be fine. Would be nice if we can finally convince Lidstrom to come back over as an "advisor" / defense coach... 1 Dabura reacted to this

I think he's NHL ready, but likely not 2C ready. I think he could do as well as any other option we have in the organization right now, but I also think throwing him in right away, may not be the best thing for his development. I'd probably keep Veleno down in Grand Rapids to start the season as the Griffs 1C, and then call him up full time after next year's trade deadline. 1 kliq reacted to this

kipwinger 8,527 Report post Posted February 13, 2020 2 hours ago, kliq said: I don’t watch any GR games, but I do follow them. Is Veleno ready for that spot? The short answer? No. Veleno is abysmal defensively at the AHL level and needs to round out that part of his game. He's getting TORCHED at 5on5. Plus his offense is only middling. About half of his 7 goals are either junk goals or else situations where someone else did the heavy lifting and Veleno simply finished off the play. Offensively he's no better than fellow AHL rookie Chase Pearson, who's scoring about as much in significantly fewer minutes.
Neomaxizoomdweebie 3,083 Report post Posted February 13, 2020 I don't see Glenny getting traded. I would only take a significant return, and the only guy who would give us that got fired. 1st Line: Laff, Larkin, Zadina 2nd Line: Bert, Flip (until TDL, then Veleno), Mantha 3rd Line: Fabbri, Moose, Nielsen 4th Line: Ehn, Glenny, Helm (trade at TDL and bring up Smith) Extras: Svech/Abby (I am trading AA over the summer) (Erne and Perlini not re-signed) 1st D pair: DeKeyser, Hronek 2nd D pair: Nemeth, Seider 3rd D pair: Cholowski, Bowey Extra D: Hicketts/Lindstrom (E, Daley, Green, and Biega all gone via free agency or trade) 1 krsmith17 reacted to this

Never mind the fact that he plays a key role on the penalty kill, and is depended on to defend leads in the final minutes of games... Veleno bangs in junk goal in front of the net. "He's trash." Rasmussen bangs in junk goal in front of the net. "OMG He's Amazing!!!" Veleno is probably another full calendar year away, but he hasn't been nearly as bad as his stats suggest, and some seem to think. Rasmussen bangs in junk goal in front of the net. "OMG He's Amazing!!!" Veleno is probably another full calendar year away, but he hasn't been nearly as bad as his stats suggest, and some seem to think. Veleno plays penalty kill precisely because he is not good defensively. Cleary and Horcoff have both said as much. That this is player who's leaned on his tremendous scoring in previous leagues and hasn't had to develop his defensive game as much. The Red Wings need this to be a C who they can throw out against any other teams top line, and so they are trying to cultivate that in him. I suspect this is also the reason he's playing 2C. Turgeon is playing a much better defensive game and is scoring at pretty much the same rate as Veleno, but he's stuck at 3C. Why? Cause Turgeon is probably never gonna be a piece that makes the Red Wings, and in the longshot he does it will be in a very minimal role. Even Pearson is scoring at almost the clip as Veleno at 4C. But this is a development league and the Wings are trying to develop Veleno over Turegon and Pearson. I wholly agree with that approach... but that does not at all mean Veleno is having some tremendous season. He's not. Hirose (0.87 ppg, -2) - Rasmussen (0.74 ppg, -3) - Tangradi (0.83 ppg, -3) Svechnikov (0.53 ppg, -10) - Veleno (0.40 ppg, -25) - Terry (0.94 ppg, -10) There are some games where Veleno is absolutely flying out there. You can tell he has a lot of raw potential. But that's all it is right now: potential. He's the obvious weakest link in that top6 right now. At the moment this kid is truly an AHL 3C at best. Still impressive in its own right for a player his age. And you're right. He has a really bad +/-. 1,068 skaters have played in the AHL this year, and Joe Veleno is dead last in the league in +/-. 1068th. Meanwhile Rasmussen was an NHL 4th line winger who played the 2nd PP unit in hist first pro season and held down the job well enough, even though the Wings probably would have preferred to develop him as the Griffins 1C last year. This season I have no doubt he could probably have played as a 4th linger winger on the Wings again, but like Seider I do prefer to keep him away from this dumpster fire team and get him the top minutes in GR. I'm guessing after the TDL Ras will get called back up to the Wings (unless no one wants our players and we don't move enough people) and I wouldn't be surprised if he get elevated to the 3rd line. No one's calling a Veleno a bust. But I am saying he was more well-rounded and ahead of Veleno at the same age. Just as he's the better player this year.
