Scott Wheeler of The Athletic has been working his way through ranking the prospect pools from each NHL team. Today the Red Wings landed at #2.

1. Edvinsson

2. ASP

3. Kasper

4. Danielson

5. Cossa

6. Augustine

7. Mazur

8. Wallinder

9. Buchelnikov

10. Sodorblom

11. Buium

12. Gibson

13. Dower Nilsson

14. Lombardi

15. Anton Johansson

Couple of things to note. Two of our best prospects (Berggren and Albert Johansson) aged out of his rankings, so we're actually in a better position even than his rankings would suggest. Also, Wheeler is famous for not liking Red Wings drafts. He always thinks we should take some tiny winger (Perfetti, Savoie, Benson) and we never do. So then he ranks our draft badly because we didn't. He's on record as really really not liking our picks. So for him to rank us this high is an acknowledgment of how good we really are, and also an indication that other evaluators may even be higher on our prospects than he is.

If you read through the comments he admits that if the Wings picked Benson over Danielson that they'd probably be #1 on his list. LOL

A top 6 that includes 2 D + 2 Centers + 2 Goalies?!!? EFF me. THIS IS AN IDEAL POOL OF PROSPECT YOU BESPECTACLED PASTY NERD BOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was gonna mention this too. Our six best prospects are all in key positions. But sure, we should have taken the 5'9, 155 lb, winger instead. Good thinking Wheeler.

"Two of our best prospects" you mean 2 of our top 5-10 not top 2?

Who is the #1 ranked team?

If you included them on the list I'd say Berggren is our 2nd best prospect and Aljo is probably in the 7-10 range. So, yes.

Hey man, scoring wingers are really hard to come by. Yzerman could only add three of them (and their 51 goals) this season for a cost of a 1st, some shiddy players, and some cash. Better to blow draft picks on them tbh

Hows Gibsons year been so far?

I've followed him a little bit, but not extensively so take it with a grain of salt. He's having a really solid, but not elite year offensively. He's regularly on the score sheet and he sees a lot of minutes. But his numbers don't blow you away like they do with a lot of OHL "offensive defensemen". But then you remember that our organizational philosophy is basically "draft toolsie guys that can play defense and the offense will come", and he starts to get a lot more exciting. He's a top end defender, in a 6'3 200 lbs body and DOES defend well. He rarely gets scored on in a notoriously offensive league AND he puts up points.

TLDR: He's another workhorse defenseman that we're all going to love in a year or two. He's basically the right handed Shai Buium.

Edit: Actually, right handed Jake Walman is probably a better fit because Gibson is pretty feisty and a lot of his offense comes from the fact that he can absolutely fire the puck.

Go read Wheelers write up from last year, and compare it to this years. It's 90% copy/paste lol.

Athletic is trash. Their content was good when it first started, but now its going into crapper quick.

They lose money every year, theyve laid off all their beat writers, and theyll be sold to Disney or close their doors soon.

Give us yours, then.  Then we'll get @kipwinger to give us his.  He watches the most hockey and knows our prospect pool the best, probably.

I'll say this about Scott Wheeler's attempt, and it might address your comment here. I don't think he really knows what he wants to do with his "prospect pool" articles. Is the idea to tell fans how players are progressing? Is it to introduce them to new prospects? Is it to tell them about players in leagues that might not have access to?

I watch A LOT of hockey. But even then, I'm limited to the NHL and AHL. The rest I have to follow online through box scores and articles. So there's a niche for Wheeler, but he doesn't take it. Instead of telling me the same things about Cossa you said when he was drafted, tell me about Andrew Gibson, Dmitry Buchelnikov, Emmitt Finnie. Sure those guys aren't Edvinsson, ASP, and Kasper but most fans are already pretty familiar with the top prospects (if only because they get the most press on draft day and right after).

The feather in Wheeler's cap seems to be that he talks about a million prospects but that doesn't really mean much if you're not saying anything important about them to the fans.

If I were Wheeler I wouldn't bother "ranking" anyone. And I wouldn't bother with the top 15 prospects on each team. I'd do a series of articles on the 5-7 most intriguing prospects on each team. Tell me why Tre Augustine dominates despite not have a pro sized frame for a goalie. Tell me why Emmitt Finnie isn't getting the same "best player on a terrible team" excuses that Nate Danielson got. Tell me whether Buchelnikov's KHL impact has a good chance of translating to North America. Tell me why everyone who sees him gushes over Albert Johansson but his counting stats look pedestrian. That stuff is interesting.

Agreed, writing up articles about 1st round draft picks is boring, unless you're going to make a claim as to why Edvinsson will surpass Victor Hedman or something outlandish like that.  "Kasper looks NHL ready for 2025.". Yah, no sh e t, Sherlock. I agree with you Kip.  I'd rather a guy like Wheeler do ONE home run or bust prospect report per team per year and read 32 articles on players that could pull a Kucherov or Datsyuk than read about the "progression" of a Wallstedt or Cossa.  Those guys are already supposed to progress.  Tell us about somebody that could come out of nowhere and why.

You're a smart guy, why don't you do it?

I'll pay for a subscription.   Perhaps your niche is exactly what real fans need.   Even Wheeler would pony up.

Your writing on here is really bloody good.    That's a shame man, you've got an ace reporters fact resolve combined with a standup comedians shrugging wit.

You don't need the money or it's just not worth it?

I already have a career doing more important things. Talking s*** about hockey is how I unwind.

Ha.  Yah, I come here to unwind as well.

I've been having a ton of fun talking about the Wings lately, particularly the last few days. I try to squeeze every last drop of dopamine out of my hobbies as I can.

I missed tonight's GR game. Looks like Mazur had a hell of a game coming back from injury.
