#2427294 Bobby Ryan to Ottawa

Posted by VM1138 on 05 July 2013 - 02:53 PM

Wash for Ottawa. Gave up a lot. Ryan disappears at times. He replaces Alfie and is younger. So...I'd say it was a good move, but it doesn't really change anythig in Ottawa.

#2426707 Wings buy out Colaiacovo, will keep Bertuzzi

Cleary the fourth line grinder who can chip in some ugly goals is great.

Cleary the top 6 would-be scoring superstar? Not great.

#2426586 Brunner Contract Talks

Just because he hit the free agent market doesn't mean he is gone. We've signed several players over the years after they hit the market. Is like to know if these writers have any real information indicating he is gone or if they are just assuming and being unimaginitive.

#2426525 Wings sign Alfredsson to 1-year, $3.5m deal (+$2m bonuses)

If Alfredsson is the start of a big summer, it's going to be a good one.  If he is the end, next season is going to be every bit of the slog last was.

Yeah, the big difference with Modano is that he had a reputation as a floater for a few years before he came to us.  Alfredsson, while old, still has game.

EDIT: As discussed in the other thread, the problem most people have with this signing is the money (rumored to be around $6 million), and the possibility that he is our big free agent acquisition this summer.  I don't think most of us actively don't want him here in any form.  But with all the talent we're losing, people are worried he isn't going to make that much of a difference.  We are still where we were a few weeks ago, and need help offensively.

Would take him for 1 year over Cleary for 3

Sure, how we perceive this Alfredsson signing depends on who he is replacing.  Is he replacing Cleary? Then it's a good move.  Is he our "big signing" of the summer expected to solve all of our problems?  Then it's a bad signing.

#2426413 Brunner Contract Talks

I do, too.  Maybe I'm just naive, but Brunner has this doe-eyed "gee golly shucks" good naturedness about him.  He seems so happy with everything, and gets so excited about experiencing new things, he probably does just genuinely want to know, haha.

Alfredsson, the captain who gave up on his team in the playoffs? Despite his talent, we are already fighting complacency on this team. I guess he fits what we need, I just wouldn't put him at the top of my list.

He's not a buffoon. But he is becoming overcautious. He is taking the long term approach. Which has flaws. For instance, you'll never win the Cup if you wait year after year for the solution to come from within. No matter how the kids develop, we will always have needs. So how many years can he just wait?

I don't hate his moves, but I worry that he has lost his "win now" mentality in favor of "make playoffs and win two rounds.". It's nice to be consistent, but we fans dont care about revenue. We want to see Cups.

Still embarrassing.

#2423300 Jakub Kindl signs 4 year extension, $9.6m total, $2.4m/yr

I'm not trying to talk you out of anything, and I don't want to argue.  But I really, really, want to know what you like about Smith.  You can message me if you want so that you don't have to argue with anyone else.  But I've got to know why he's on that list.

Smith is a really likable guy. You can tell he tries hard and is devastated when he screws up. I'm rooting for him because of that.

#2421698 Nyquist or Tatar

Posted by VM1138 on 24 June 2013 - 07:49 AM

They are so close talent-wise. It comes down to Tatar's aggressive goal scoring and playing much bigger than he is against Nyquist's superior playmaking and better defense. I'm not too worried about having Brunner, Tatar, and Nyquist. Tatar doesn't play small, Nyquist has a well rounded game and Brunner is dedicated to improve his game in every area.

#2421210 Dreger: Filppula looking for $5.5m/season over at least 7 years

Posted by VM1138 on 21 June 2013 - 12:40 PM

No matter how anyone spins it that he's small, passess to cleary on a break away, doesn't give good enough massages, does not fight etc etc, one thing is certain. Fil has the qualities of a top player. He passess well, backchecks, and scores enough to be effective to the money he is paid.

He's average. He doesn't create matchup problems. I've never heard a coach worry about who is going to faceoff against Filppula. He is good defensively, but we can replace that. He is not a dominant player. He can't lead a scoring line.

He was fine while he was cheap, but at that price we can find a hungrier, more reliable forward.

And I dont think Helm is injure frequently. I could be wrong, but hasn't he only been hurt twice? It's just that this injury is a long one. Compared with Sammy who gets hurt pectorals and slips on banana peels.

I have to disagree.  Flip is a semi-talented playmaker, but that's it.  He literally kills offense most of the time because he tries to pass the puck on a breakaway.  He never developed past his 2nd-3rd line tweener status.  He was serviceable, but he wasn't good.  His talent isn't great enough to contribute on the top two lines consistently, and he's not creative enough to be a difference maker.

I'm not going to say he's terrible, but he doesn't really add anything that can't be replaced.

Flip wasn't failing because he didn't have a 40 goal scorer, Flip failed because he's timid and is literally scared of shooting the puck. A change of scenery won't help him.
