#2674487 This hits the nail on the head......

Posted by LeftWinger on 29 April 2016 - 02:52 PM

I am one of the BIGGEST Holland critic here, but I heard the excerps and then watched the entire presser.  The quotes are for sure taken out of context.

I think he means by "less is more exciting" and "if you expect Cups, you're in the wrong league" that when the fans realize they need to lower their yearly expectations, they may enjoy the seasom much more.  Now, I am not saying its ok to NOT expect a Cup, but we all know you just cannot win it every year.  He said we're here to win Cups not just make the playoffs, but the fans also need to realize that after 25 years of making the playoffs and winning 4 Cups in that span, you don't always get the best players in the draft.  Plus, the fact that the Cap is here, and instead of 4-6 teams being favorites every season, there are 25 teams that can make the playoffs and compete for it, so not landing the top UFA's like those 4-6 teams used to (or even be on a players "accept a trade to" list) is something the fans need to get used to as well.  Does anyone really think that if there wasn't a cap making virtually every team competitive that we'd have lost out on Suter/Parise or Niskanen?  When the wallet is bottomless and payroll can be limitless, we'd still be favorites every year.

I too, think that if all expectations to win a Cup every season, were lowered a bit, we may enjoy the competition to get to the playoffs.  He said, he plans on being agressive with trades at the draft, he is going to move younger players up the roster and bring up more kids from GR.  He said he needs to change the style and makeup of the team, and is already planing on NOT having Datsyuk.  He will trade the contract if he can find a taker but he won't trade it if that taker wants to deplete out minors or draft picks.  He is ok with taking the cap hit for one year to protect the likes of AA, Larkin, Bertuzzi, etc... and high draft picks.  I think he means it this time.  I think, even though ownership said that they support him 100%, that he was told, do something or we won't be so supportive in the near future...

I like that he said he'd like to have Helm, but he understands that he needs to make a family decision because this is a very important contract for Helm and is prepared to move on without him.  I really think we won't see any other re-siging of our UFA's outside of the possible Helm deal.  Also, VERY excited about his opinion that Howard has to be traded (paraphrasing) because he cannot have so much money in a goalie combo.  Something I've been saying for two seasons.

Here is a link to the entire presser for those who haven't seen it...

#2674183 Mantha

I'm not really concerned with Mantha's defensive lapses. I'd rather they have him focused on scoring goals and making things happen in the offensive zone. There are enough 2 way forwards on this team

Just to compare.

Nyquist first trip up was in 11/12. He played 18 games and scored 1 goal.

Tatar first trip up was 10/11. He played 9 games and scored 1 goal.

Datsyuk's first year was 01/02. He played 70 games and had 11 goals.

Abby played 54 games over three seasons: 07-10. He scored 3 goals over that stretch.

Mantha's 2 goals in 10 games is 16 per 80 games. Those are decent numbers for a rookie that wasn't a top 5 pick.

#2673843 WCSF : St. Louis Blues vs. Dallas Stars

Posted by GMRwings1983 on 26 April 2016 - 01:27 PM

Stars won in '99.

Blues haven't won at all.

I consider the Blues a bit 'Old School' in the sense that they were part of the 1st expansion back in 1967.

They haven't won it all because the Gods hate them.  The Stars have never won a legitimate Cup, so they have something to prove also.

I suggest you change your avatar to a Scott Parker Sharks avatar and root for Joe and the boys to bring a Cup to Silicon Valley.

#2673929 Dan Boyle Curses Out Reporters

Posted by Z and D for the C on 26 April 2016 - 08:05 PM

Curses out reporters? Tirade? I think that's over exaggerating things. He's pissed and is showing some emotion, it'd be nice if someone on the Wings showed some emotion over their losses sometime and maybe there wouldn't be so many of them.

#2673607 Alexander Radulov: Wings on short-list of desired teams

Posted by F.Michael on 25 April 2016 - 06:09 PM

For the ones saying no ... If datsyuk says he'd return if radulov would sign with the wings would you say yes or still stick with the no?

Only if Holland hires Joey Kocur as the Wings motivational coach...And when I say 'motivate' - I mean he gets to punch guys in the face who screw up, or take nights off.

@Stefan Kubus

Howard: Would be OK with a trade. It's part of the business.

#2673542 Fixing this mess....

Can't believe E was invited...is that team desperate for bodies back there?

It was debated, I certainly don't think he belongs. Too soft wording, I Know he don't belong. The coaching staff said they didn't want to split up Kronwall - E or something similar. Seems they are a few years behind the radar.

Anyhow, thankfully he declined, he ain't making the team anymore, ever. Now if the Wings could just waive him or if he retired we'd be in a much better spot.

#2672763 ECQF Game 5 Post-GDT: at Tampa Bay 1, Red Wings 0 (TB Wins, 4-1)

Posted by GMRwings1983 on 21 April 2016 - 09:33 PM

The real playoff streak was being a Cup contender for about 17 years or so.  Many of those seasons, they were the Cup favorite.  No other team besides Montreal from the 50's to the 70's had a streak like that.

However, the last 6 or 7 years are all about keeping a stupid streak alive just to give us one week of pathetic playoff hockey to watch.  That streak is not impressive.  That's what the Blues streak was about all those years.  Make it to the playoffs and lose one week later.  Who cares?

This.

If Holland wasn't so in love with Blashill we'd see a new coach for next season, but nothing will change.

How can Holland have the nerve to fire a coach when he's been here so long and has sucked as GM for many years?  That would take some nerve.  The ownership needs to step in and fire them both.  The fact that Yzerman and Nill are having so much success just makes it sting more.

Glad to see the Blackhawks feed for the Blues game...Cannot wait to hear Hawks play by play guy Pat Foley cry as the Blues finish this series.

This line from Holland. Just... wow: http://www.detroitne...yoffs/82866748/

“Anthony Mantha was a spare part in the (AHL) Calder Cup playoffs a year ago. Why does anyone think he is going to be the answer in Detroit?”

I don't get the thought process behind saying something like that. At all.

#2622535 Las Vegas rumored to get an expansion team

Posted by wings4thecup06 on 08 August 2015 - 02:15 PM

Ive been against this idea from the beginning, and now it's one step closer I still find it totally abhorrent. There'll be no real fan base there, and there could be constant links to gambling. And what about the team that lives there? Can you imagine some of the more shadier characters in the league being able to stay out of trouble? It's another desperate attempt by Gary to try and force hockey onto markets it doesn't belong for the sake of expansion fees to fill the pockets of those paying his salary.
