#2609128 Coaching Search Thread a.k.a. the Jeff Blashill Thread

Posted by wings_fanatic on 20 May 2015 - 03:32 PM

I really liked that Kenny talked about not being happy about the early playoffs exits the past few years. For that reason he said that's why he didn't want to sign babs to more than 5 years which is an excellent point.

Phil Kessel, do you know what backchecking is?

No? Welcome to the 4th line.

I won't make that bet.

Agreed.

The Leafs roster isn't as bad as many think...They haven't had a good coach since Pat Quinn.

#2605686 Call Out the NHL on BS

Posted by frankgrimes on 03 May 2015 - 11:15 AM

1. NHL Front Office is run by guys that know nothing about hockey and therefore shouldn't have the job.

2. Hockey is on the verge of becoming as sissylike as soccer: fights are down, hits are down and players don'tr even know which hit is a suspension and which isn't because there is no consistency in their decision and most seem to be based on throwing a darts at the wall.

3. There are too many regulations and rules in place to make life difficult for owners and GMs . Back in the late 90s and early 2000's this game was way better and much more entertaining, period. I mean when the best GMs in the game are struggling due too many rules and regulations something needs to chane, period. Add to that the almost 0 entertainment and excitment for free agency and there are even less things to look forward to.

I fully agree I hope oneday is someone comes out and call out the NHL for all the crap that's going on, would love someone like Super Mario or Wayne doing that.

#2606188 Jim Devellano on Mantha's play: "Very disappointing"

I think Dan Cleary needs to publicly call out Devellano for these comments.

#2605463 Who is the coach next season?

Posted by haroldsnepsts on 01 May 2015 - 04:21 PM

If that's really the case, then Mike Babcock isn't as great as everyone makes him out to be.  Lots of teams win Cups without a Zetterberg or a Datsyuk.  Joel Quenneville never had a 90+ point, two way, superstar.  Neither did Darryl Sutter.  Neither of them had a Lidstrom either.

I sure hope that Babcock has more faith in his coaching ability than that.  Because if he really thinks he can't win without a Datsyuk or Zetterberg, then he absolutely sucks.

Lots of teams? Like who?

The first one I can kind of think of is Carolina.  And they at least had Staal.

Quenneville had an 88 point player in Kane, a 68 point great two way forward in Toews, and a Norris winning defenseman in Keith.  And Hossa.  So he had three superstar forwards and a great #1 d-man.  Quenneville hadn't been to the Cup finals until he coached a team with that talent.

Sutter didn't win the Cup until he had Kopitar, Doughty, Quick, along with Brown, Richards and Carter.  Sutter had several great forwards, a great #1 d-man, and a great playoff goaltender.

Are you really saying those two teams won the Cup without players of the calibre of Datsyuk and Zetterberg?

#2605149 Things you would like to see for 2015-16 Season

Posted by _SP_ on 30 April 2015 - 06:21 PM

So let's start with the UFAs:

Daniel Cleary (let go - 1.5M)
Erik Cole (let go - $4M)
Marek Zidlicky (let go - $3M)

Jonas Gustavsson (let go - 1.85M)

This puts us at a cap space of $10.5M.

Bring back all minor UFA/RFA's:

Mitch Callahan

Nick Jensen

Louis-Marc Aubry

Jared Coreau

Tom McCollum

Andy Miele

Kevin Porter

NHL RFAs:

Brendan Smith (2-years, $2.5M/year = +$1.25M)
Gustav Nyquist (1-year, $1.5M/year = +$0.5M)

Tomas Jurco (1-year, $1.5M/year = +$0.75M)

Joakim Andersson (let go, saving 0.75M)

Teemu Pukkinen (2-years, $1.25M/year = +$0.5M)

Landon Ferraro (2-years, $1.25M/year = +$0.75M)

This leaves the team with roughly $7.25M in cap space.

So we're looking at a loose forward lineup of:

Abdelkader - Datsyuk - Zetterberg
Miller - Glendening - Ferraro

How do you fulfill the other two lines?  I think you have to give a long look to Tatar, Nyquist, Sheahan, Pulkkinen, Mantha, and Helm.  I'm moving Weiss to the first team that offers to absorb his contract.

Kronwall - ?

DeKeyser - Quincey

Ericsson - Smith

You have to consider Marchenko and Ouellet for a spot too.  Maybe move Ericsson and his salary ($4.25M)?

Let's say both Weiss and Ericsson are moved (getting nothing in return but spare minor league parts and cap space).  That gives the team $16.5M in space.

My two targets are Arizona/Chicago C Antoine Vermette and Washington D Mike Green.  2-years, $5.5M/year for Vermette and 5-years, $6M/year for Mike Green.

So we end up with:

Abdelkader - Datsyuk - Zetterberg
Nyquist - Vermette - Tatar
Sheahan - Helm - Pulkkinen
Miller - Glendening - Ferraro

Callahan - Jurco

Kronwall - Green

DeKeyser - Quincey

Smith - Marchenko

Kindl

Mrazek
?

... what's that, you say?  Yep, with $5M in cap space, I'm offering Ottawa G Andrew Hammond a $3M deal to play 1-year here splitting 50-50 with Mrazek, giving him the chance to springboard a 40-start season into a long-term contract. That's a 400% increase in his current salary.

So where does Howard go? My goal is to offer him and a player like Jurco-Pulkkinen-Sproul for a true #1 PWF or DEF.  What teams need a goalie?  Buffalo, Florida (if Luongo retires), Dallas, Edmonton, Arizona, and San Jose, in my opinion.  And with there only being one "true" #1 Goalie in FA (Niemi) I think there could be quite a bit of interest.

My most realistic top target: Joe Thornton.  Of course, his contract is an average value of $6.75M and, with trading Howard ($5.25M), the Red Wings have $0.50M in room or so based on conservative projections here.  I'm offering D Joe Hicketts / F Tomas Nosek / mid-round draft picks if necessary.  Nothing more, not with Joe going head-to-head against their front office so much.

So my final roster...

Abdelkader - Datsyuk - Zetterberg
Nyquist - Thornton - Tatar
Sheahan - Vermette - Helm
Miler - Glendening - Ferraro

Jurco - Callahan

Kronwall - Green

DeKeyser - Quincey
Smith - Marchenko
Kindl

Mrazek
Hammond

And we keep Pulkkinen, Larkin, Mantha, Ouellet, Sproul, Athanasiou...

Thoughts?

#2605148 Who is the coach next season?

Posted by gcom007 on 30 April 2015 - 06:18 PM

After what Babcock said last night, about not being as good anymore (despite making a 7 point improvement over last year, and taking the highest scoring team in the league to 7 games), mentioning the ages of Dats, Z, and Kronwall, and asking who's going to replace Pavs, I'd like to see him go. We have a lot of great young players on the team now and coming up soon, if Babcock doesn't think he can win here, then bring someone in who knows he will.

If Babcock wants to start nit picking, I'd like to point out he was here 10 years, and for 7 of those years he had the best defenseman since Bobby Orr, and only won 1 Cup... Dats, Z, and Kronwall have a few more good years left, and with Tatar, Nyquist, Abby, Helm, DeKeyser, Smith, Mrazek, Mantha, Larkin, Jurco, Marchenko, Ouellet, Sheahan, Pulkkinen, Glendening, etc. all in their 20's, we're going to be good for a while.

Nit picking my ass! We don't have anyone remotely close to Datsyuk's level coming up, and that's absolutely a problem. Babcock was being entirely realistic and addressing a very real problem that this team is going to be facing in the coming years. We do have a lot of good young players coming up, but do we have anyone even close to Datsyuk's level? I think people really, really, really undervalue how important Datsyuk is to this team.

As I said before, we're going to learn a lot more about Holland in the coming years, because it's one thing to lose Lidstrom when you still have true superstars in Dats and Z to build your team around. But as of now, it's highly unlikely that we're going to have that luxury when Dats and Z retire, and with Z likely slowing down faster, it's going to be all the more pressing of an issue.

Nothing Babcock said was unrealistic and unwarranted. We have some serious issues to deal with, and I don't think Babcock wants to wait until Dats and Z retire to hunt for a solution. And yes, I think Babcock is staying.

#2605134 Who is the coach next season?

Posted by wings_fanatic on 30 April 2015 - 04:39 PM

Well said. Everyone has a shelf life and I believe Babs has reached his in Detroit. It is extremely unusual for a head coach to not have a new deal in place at the end of the season, which tells me he is gone on July 1 (or whenever his contract officially expires).

I recall babs making comments about our D core last year after Boston series and everyone loved it. This to me is babs calling out Kenny for not doing enough. Babs is a smart guy. He's not insulting pav and hank he is speaking the truth. They r aging and Kenny needs to have a good off season. This was babs calling on that. I still say babs is back here next year.

I'd rather Anaheim or Chicago win the cup than Tampa or the Habs.

That's what playing in the East has done to my soul.

Did you really just say you'd rather the Blackhawks win the Cup??

I can't even look at you right now...

I'm normally pretty calm and pragmatic at times like these. Not so much this year. Yes I understand they were big underdogs. It was a competitive improvement over last year's 5 game loss to Boston.

We have found a netminder in Mrazek I think is capable of winning it all. I have a confidence in him I just have never felt with Jimmy. Mrazek is my goalie going forward. Trade Jimmy, keep him as a backup (I'm not sure that's possible at this point). Datsyuk and Z have to be allowed to play for Detroit as long as they feel they can. That being said if your name isn't Abdelkader, Glendening, Helm, or Sheahan I'm listening to offers. Yep, if we can make this team better and more able to go further in the playoffs I'm listening to offers for Nyquist or Tatar or anybody not in GR or Ferraro. Defensively the back end needs to be overhauled. Kronner and DeKeyser stay (and XO & Marchenko), past that let's see what can be done.

Game 7 vs Pittsburgh in 2009

Game 6 vs Chicago in 2013

Game 6 vs Tampa Bay in 2015

ALL bad losses at JLA. It's becoming too much of a habit to lose these games and not take destiny by the throat. I understand different years and circumstances but This MUST change. They need finishers. Closers. Heck, bring me Steve Ott if he'll get us into the second round.

Winter is coming, and we'd better be better prepared for it next time.

My post series thoughts:

1) Always disappointing to lose like this...I remember when we lost game 7 to the Pens for the Cup.  I was seriously down for like a week...we were better than them.  We were the best team in the league then.  This is bad...but i am already over it.  I don't think the Wings had what it takes to get out of the East.  The Rangers defense is stacked.  Price is tough.  There are just too many barriers and our best players are a bit too old.  It would have been nice to continue in the playoffs...not meant to be.

2) I thought we played a good series...nothing to hang our heads about.  We had our chances to nail this down in games 4 and 6.  The great teams get it done.  We didn't.  But the guys played tough.  Guys i admired during the series include Glenny, Abby, Helmer, Dats, Mraz.  I like their game...

3) I am not sure getting really old players at the deadline is a great idea.  Keith Yandle would have been a good get.  Zidlicky is too slow and really cost us in these playoffs a bit...I am not sure he is really any better than Kindl, Marchenko, or Oulett.  Cole ended up being a non-factor.  Getting old players at the deadline for a bunch of "spare part" assets, messing up the chemistry, sitting young players, then slumping your way into the playoffs.  Kenny has not really made a lot of outstanding moves lately.  Giving 5 mill to Weiss who was coming off injury was incredibly bone-headed.   The whole "overripe" thing is overrated.  Hockey players in this era are beaten up after 31 or so and on the downside of things.  Just my opinion.  If you want to be a franchise that competes for the Cup every year you have to make bold, smart moves.  If you make bad moves...no Cup.

4) I am really impressed with Mrazek's demeanor, puck handling, and athleticism.  He overplays things and that needs to be fixed...but it is fixable.  I like him in net over Jimmy who does to handle the puck so well and seems to be always tweaking his groin.

5) I would trade Jimmy to a team that really needs a goalie (? St. Louis) for either a rugged scoring winger or a top tier defenseman.  Mraz starts...and then find a serviceable back up.

6) No more really old players please.  Unless he is a core guy (Z, Dats, Kron), the secondary players should be young and not have a lot of miles on them.

7) We need a bit of grit and size in our forwards...Franzen is pretty much done.  I would trade him for a low pick and a back up goalie...if he actually can still play.  Get rid of him.

8) Weiss needs to go...back to Florida for a low pick...maybe his game needs Florida...I don't know.

9) It would be great to have a #1 D-man...I have no idea how we get one of these.

10) I would not re-sign either Cole or Zids...too old.

11)  There is a lot of negative talk about Zetterberg here...but he is not going anywhere.  I am hopeful that as he gets farther out from his back surgery he can still be a contributor.

That's all i got for now...disappointing that we are out and i have no more playoff games to worry about.

Abby is not a bonafide top 6 player.  A bonafide top 6 player would score more points in the regular season playing with Zetterberg and Nyquist.  And certainly would do more in the playoffs than Abby did.  He works hard and improved greatly, but still doesn't have a lot of talent.

He would be a top 6 player if 1-5 were producing more of late. He looked a little banged up tonight, but for the last 2 months he certainly has been a top 6-er. Time will tell if that's just a hot streak or indicative of a step up...
