#2613690 Mcnulty and wheaton unsigned and going back into the draft

Posted by rick zombo on 09 June 2015 - 01:45 PM

Umm according to that article we didn't sign them , but I don't know about a deadline ... Was gonna ask if anyone's heard of hampus melen resigning? They didn't mention him and if he's not signed he goes back to the draft as well

Not the best but if ouellet and marchenko move up we have 6 prospects at d and one is like 5'8(hicketts) and the other is dissapointing(sproul) ... Not to mention jensen who if stays another year down will start his nhl career at 25

We need to draft mostly d's this year

I think that was the case even before these two fringe prospects were cut loose.

Take the best player available in the first round and then draft for need after that.

Oh. My. God.  That was not personal at all.  It was a guess based on your perceptions.  Apparently I was wrong.  That's not even in the ballpark of being a personal attack and certainly wasn't meant to insult you.

And I have to ask, what does you playing hockey have to do with anything I said?

It has as much to do with anything as my age, family hockey orientation, favourite brand of bell-bottom jeans, the amount of Kiss records I have stashed under my coffee table, or whatever else you seem to think applies to my qualifications to speak substaintially about hockey rivalries.

I didn't say it was an attack. But you defintely tried to make your point my including assumptions about my age and up-bringing. Both of which are personal things.

It would be like me saying this: "you must be like 60 if you remember the last time Toronto and Detroit played for anything more important than that one series in 1992". But I don't assume this.

Yeah, kind of surprising actually.  If it wasn't for the Game 1 collapse, TB's up 3-0.  I thought the Hawks talent and especially experience would have given them a better start to this series.  I was expecting a Wings/Pens 2008 type of series.

It'll be less painful for our most bitter rival to win their 3rd championship in 6 years than to have our Captain get his name on the Stanley Cup again, all because they beat us and it could have been us there?  I suppose anything could happen, we could have made it to the Finals, but it was the first round.  Its not like it was the Conference Finals or something.  A lot would have had to happen for us to get that far.  The Wings matched up well with TB.  Can't say the same about Montreal, they were a team that TB owned.  I'm over our loss.  I'm even over Cooper and his whining and their fanbase.  The Lightning have had their moments of jerkiness during these playoffs, but it's nothing compared to Chicago that chants "Detroit sucks" in their sleep.

For me? Yes.

The Chicago - Detroit rivalry will eventually die. Just like the Colorado - Detroit rivalry did.

Tampa should be as much or more of a rivalry as the Hawks. The Wings are already playing more important games against Tampa. That's not going to change.

I really liked the breakout on that game winner.  Chicago was playing an aggressive game by sending both wingers into the corner to pressure, and they both got caught deep with a simple pass around the boards.  After winning the faceoff, Paquette races across the blue line as a faux-outlet pass for his winger, but that just eliminates Chiago's high forward from the breakout, because he has to cover Paquette.  Meanwhile, Hedman is activated from his own faceoff dot and the guy who should be covering him is still curling out of the corner due to aforementioned aggressive commitment.  That left Hedman to take an easy pass with good speed out of his zone and break through into the Blackhawk's zone unmolested.  Add that to a bit of lazy coverage in the slot and the series is 3-2 Lightning.  Awesome play from faceoff to goal.

Which is all great, except they're a bunch of dix.

I'm pulling for Chicago.

If Chicago wins, it will be gross, but I'll except it because that's what they've been doing and that's what's supposed to happen. It will be really painful if Tampa wins this series because it could have been Detroit.

#2613510 What changes do you think we'll see with Blashill?

Posted by rick zombo on 08 June 2015 - 09:39 AM

The same know-it-alls that acted like Babcock possibily going to Toronto was the dumbest thing anyone could think of?

Depends. Are the people that over-estimated Babcock's desire to win while under-estimating the importance of money and ego the same people that refuse to under-estimate the importance of Holland? If so, then yes, the same know-it-alls.

Edit: to stay on topic,  I'm hoping the goaltending is realgudTM this year so that Blashill can run a system where the F3TM can help Shoot the Puck IN The NetTM in the O-zoneTM and worry less about helping the D.

#2613508 2015 Draft

Posted by rick zombo on 08 June 2015 - 09:30 AM

This reminds me of Luongo complaining that Tim Thomas didn't "pump his tires" a couple years ago in the finals.  How entitled do you have to be?

Is Jack Eichel bound by some sort of hockey law to kiss Connor McDavid's ass?  Screw McDavid.  I'd rather have a "cocky" kid like Eichel, who is confident and competitive, than the next Nail Yakupov.

You can keep your hero worship.  I like hockey players, not "saviors".

Yes. It's written in the "Don Cherry Book of Hockey Regulations and Reforms". I believe it's in the Tim Horton's subsection right beside the clause about hot enforcer WAGs.

I love how the jokes about Holland's cliches are actually becoming even bigger cliches then the source material. Very meta.

#2613388 Report: Cleary wants to return for 1 more season

Posted by rick zombo on 07 June 2015 - 01:21 AM

Exactly. People are going to lose their s*** over a guy that played 17 games last season and probably would play even less under Blashill. He's a veteran presence in the locker room that the Red Wings feel they need to take care of, for better or worse. His impact as a hockey player will not have any affect on the team going forward.

He'd be taking a roster spot. That affects the team going forward. Sort of like if I told you Detroit would only be allowed a 22 man roster. Believe it of not, it matters. I won't freak out if Cleary comes back for another tour, but he can't really play hockey anymore. I'd rather they invent another role for him.

#2612998 The return of The Mule?

I don't know why you respond to people (including me) as if you know them personally. I have no idea if your a 13 year old kid with nothing to do, or a 65 year old retired lady waiting for my response so you can argue it immediately. I will end this dialogue for those reasons. I can also tell you probably have never played the game of hockey (correct me if I'm wrong) at any notable level, so was probably always a waste of time

What would be awesome is if Kip actually was a 65 year old retired lady and was playing hockey at a notable level right now.

That's because the Griffs are making it easy on him.  They gain the zone and toss the puck at him from the perimeter.  Of course it's easy for him to deal with.  They've got not net front presence and nobody is making plays in the offensive zone.  They look like a team full of Mikael Samuelssons.

So they really do use the same structure/style of play as the Wings then.

Nah dude, he sucks.  Cut him.  Make him trade bait.  Cut bait and trade him.  etc.

Because one time, there was this guy named Ville Leino.  And get this, Ville Leino was lazy, arrogant, and entitled.  So therefore, he sucked.  And Jurco wasn't really very good this year either.  So chances are, he's probably like Ville Leino.  Because both of them weren't very good, for totally different reasons.

Make sense now?

Don't forget about Europe.

#2608677 Report: Oilers hire McLellan

Posted by rick zombo on 19 May 2015 - 11:58 PM

If Babs goes to Buffalo, it will be an ongoing story line for next few years to see which coach can bring their respective teams to respectability.  As an indicator, let's say the 1st team to make it to the playoffs.  I'll say McLellan.

It'll take three years for either of them to get more win in a season than Blashill. There's your respectability.

The fact of the matter is unless we are picking in the top 10, our chances of drafting an elite player are going to be very slim.  If you look at the offensive leaders this year, most of them have been high draft picks.  In fact, in the top 10 this year, only Jiri Hudler and Jamie Benn were chosen in the 2nd round and later.  Every other player was a 1st round high draft pick.

In the new NHL, you can draft smart like the Wings and not get a star player.  You have a greater chance of landing that franchise player by having bad seasons and drafting high.  This is how the Blackhawks built their team.  This is how the Lightning built their new team.  Here is a great article on the value of players and the draft pick position of those players in relation.

In short, if we want an elite player, we either have to get lucky in the later rounds OR have a poor season and try to get a elite player in the first 5 picks and hope it pans out.  Since getting an elite player is easier for those that are picking high, it would make sense to have some poor seasons to get those high draft picks.  Nothing is for certain though.  Its not like everyone picking #1 is drafting a stud.  There have been some real dogs out there for sure.

But it is possible to get an allstar D man in outside of the top 10:

Weber - 2nd round

Subban - 2nd round

Keith - 2nd Round

Even Karlsson went 15th.

There is hope.
