Detroit Lions

Funny quotes from the writeup:

"Winning like this shows character," said Detroit quarterback Joey Harrington.

Great, lots of character. How 'bout you win in a fashion that shows some talent now?

For the Lions (5-10), it was an amazing victory in a season in which their fans protested their bad play and the management of team president Matt Millen.

Any victory for this bunch is amazing.

"There have been times the coaches have not believed in me, and there have been times the players didn't believe in me," said Harrington, who was 17-of-30 for 210 yards in his third crack as the starter. "But I never lost faith in myself."

Don't forget the fans.

Now maybe the folks back home will quiet down a bit.

Yeah, a one-point victory against the sorriest franchise in the league, the New Jersey/San Antonio/Baton Rouge/Anywhere But The Superdome Saints ('Aints for a good reason), where the offense manages two field goals and zero touchdowns....that should really keep the fans happy.

Did anyone hear on Fox 2 about Lions nearing a head coach? They said some Offensive Coordinator or something working for the KC Chiefs could be announced as the new Lions head coach as early as next week, sorry I forget his name.

I didnt hear that (missed the news tonight), but I would not be surprised at all if this was the coaching move, KC had VERY VERY STRONG interest (them and the Lions talked for a LONG time on draft day in '01 about trading up) in Joey and believed he would be a PERFECT fit in their offensive system..

So if this ends up happening, then I could just about guarentee you all that Joey would infact be returning.

Printers draws interest

According to the Detroit News, the Lions are looking at B.C. Lions quarterback Casey Printers. Printers is 24, put up gaudy numbers in 2004 (hurt in '05). Played college ball at TCU and Florida A&M.

I'm intrigued. I'd like to get him. He was the CFL's MVP in 2004 and I believe he led the Lions (British Columbia, that is) to the Grey Cup that year. He wouldn't be the first QB to successfully make the transition from the CFL to NFL (see: Garcia, Jeff; Flutie, Doug; and Moon, Warren). Better yet, he's plenty young enough to play with the Lions a long time, but he's got pro development under his belt, so we don't need to draft and ruin the career of yet another "franchise savior" (see: Ware, Andre; Batch, Charlie; and Harrington, Joey).

I hope he signs in Detroit. Miami and Kansas City appear to be his other choices (according to the article, his agent is discussing "financial ramifications" with those three franchises. translation: pay up.) I'm not interested in whether or not he "fits the offense". I'm interested in: can he play? Appears he can.

Only my Steelers would have Joey Harrington aka Ryan Leaf look like a real NFL QB

everyone is surprised when joey plays good. Harrington is an NFL QB. The problem for Joey has been his consistancy. He can play great one week and absolutely stink up the joint the next week. Joey is 10 times the better quarterback than Ryan Leaf ever was.

I didn't get to watch the game, but statistically, Joey Ballgame had a great day. Wouldn't surprise me if that's one of his best games in his NFL career.

I hope he does well on whatever team he ends up on.

Wow, Joey looked great today! That was nice to see, but I don't think he'll be back next year. Best of luck to him on whatever team he goes on...

The "Bus" looked absolutely unstoppable in today's game..the fans were just estatic.

For a minute though, I actually thought the Lions were going to win. Guess I should've known, eh? Better luck next season.

The Lions will hold the 11th pick in the draft if the Rams lose tonight to the Cowboys. The tiebreaker is strength of schedule, weakest gives you the best draft pick, and the Lions have the strongest schedule of any of the 5-11 teams (Bills, Lions, Cardinals, Rams). If the Rams win, the Lions move up to either 9th or 10th, as that would tie their schedule with the Cardinals. Since the Lions beat the Cardinals, I would imagine they can get no higher than 10th. A Rams loss would give them the 8th pick as the weakest in strength of schedule, followed by the Bills, Cardinals, and then Lions.

Too low to pick D'Brick and too high for Eric Winston. The Lions are DESPERATE for offensive line help. Winston or Greg Eslinger could be had in the second round. Eslinger is a center. Raiola is a putz - Eslinger would a great pick. For the first round pick, how about Jimmy Williams, the Virginia Tech cornerback? There's not much depth at that position. The Lions were hurting in the secondary with both Bryant and Bly out at one time. Or, they could trade up and nab D'Brickashaw.

The Detroit Lions are expected to interview Browns offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon for their vacant head coach position. They may ask for permission as soon as Monday.

Carthon has received his share of criticism from media and fans in his first season of calling plays for the 5-10 Browns. But the fact it rolls easily off his back reflects a quality that endears him to Lions President Matt Millen.

Millen wants to restore discipline and toughness to a team allowed to spin out of control by former coach Steve Mariucci.

Millen saw those qualities in Carthon as Detroit's running backs coach in 2001 and offensive coordinator in 2002. Those teams were a pathetic 5-27 under coach Marty Mornhinweg, but the Lions had success running the ball. Mornhinweg called his own plays on offense.

...

Carthon is not viewed as a front-runner for the Lions' job, but is in the mix, according to a source close to the club.

The Lions are expected to also interview Russ Grimm, Pittsburgh offensive line coach; Tim Lewis, Giants defensive coordinator; and Jim Schwartz, Tennessee defensive coordinator.

Also, Dick Jauron, the Lions defensive coordinator who has restored some order as interim coach, will be formally considered for the permanent job.

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer regarding the future of the Lions' head coaching position. I maintain that Carthon's disciplinarian stance and past success as the Lions' running backs coach would make him good for the job - the only thing that worries me is that he was offensive coordinator for the worst offense in the NFL - even worse than the Lions.

I don't know much about the other interview candidates. I don't think I want Jauron back though. I didn't like his decisions when he took the job, especially deciding to start Garcia at first. Waste of three games when we could have been evaluating Joey or Orlovsky. I do think we need an offensive mind and not a defensive one. We're alright on defense - I wouldn't even mind seeing Jauron brought back as DC. The offense is pathetic and needs revamping.
