RockyMountainWingGal 108 Report post Posted November 14, 2006 The other reason is the UM fanbase. I actually respect the University of Michigan itself. It's an excellent school. Too bad the vast majority of their fans A) never went there and B) couldn't get in unless they were pushing a broom. Now, it doesn't bother me so much that these people cheer for a school they could never get into. I understand that UM is a powerhouse when it comes to football, and it's fun to cheer for a winner and their cool helmets. FYI, MSU wore the winged helmets before UM did. What pisses me off is when UM's white trash fanbase acts superior to Spartans, despite the fact their only association to the university is hanging a UM flag outside their doublewide meth lab on game day. You want to cheer for the Weasels, fine. But don't act like you're superior to me when UM beats State. At least I went to the college I cheer for. Now wait a minute - I went to school at Michigan and I'd like to think I got in on my own merit. I, however, don't see any reason why people who live in Michigan can't cheer for them to win, even if they didn't go to school there. My husband is a UM fan (if you can really call him a fan of any sport), because he from the A2 area - but he didn't go to school there. I don't know where the "superiority" thing comes in. Since I lived in East Lansing, I have no problem cheering for the Spartans, when convenient of course. I'll be most of the state of Ohio are OSU fans - wait didn't all Ohioans go to OSU.... We have the opposite issue in Colorado - nobody here supports the damn football team (yes they suck but this has been going on for years). They don't sell out, are rarely televised locally, and are trash talked by the media (OK somtimes they deserve it). I think Denver needs more CU fans even if they didn't go to school there - it's pretty hard to be one though when you can't even see the games.
Happy Pancake 6 Report post Posted November 14, 2006 (edited) My mom went to Michigan and I started watching Michigan football when I was five. I've always cheered for them and I always will, however all my other Michigan family members either went to MSU or are in some way affiliated with MSU (they're all from Lansing). My grandfather was even head engineer overseeing construction of Spartan Stadium and has a complete scale model of the stadium in his basement. I always tell him he built a heck of a place for Michigan to come in and disappoint Spartans fans. I basically root for MSU every week they don't play Michigan. Happy Pancake 6 Report post Posted November 14, 2006 Ohio State fans needed a warning letter to visiting Michigan fans apparently. Letter sent to UM students: We know that it can be uncomfortable being in an opposing team's environment, especially when the stakes are so high. We would like to offer a few suggestions in order to help you stay safe and have a positive experience this weekend: --Try carpooling to the game; if possible, drive a car with non- Michigan license plates. --Keep your Michigan gear to a minimum, or wait until you are inside the stadium to display it. --Stay with a group. --Know and obey the laws regarding alcohol use. --If you are of legal age to drink, use alcohol in moderation. Stay in the blue. --Stay low-key; don't draw unnecessary attention to yourself. --If verbally harrassed by opposing fans, don't take the bait. --Avoid High Street in Columbus. If at any time you feel unsafe, you should call 9-1-1 for assistance. U-M campus police also will be available in Columbus to support our fans. You may call them with non-emergency concerns at (734) 216-9159. We look forward to a tremendous game on Saturday. Let's help the Wolverines win with spirit and class. gowingsgo 3 Report post Posted November 14, 2006 My dad went to UM and saw Michigan beat Ohio State in like 69' or 68' to go to the Rose Bowl. My cousins are all going to the game from Michigan. Its going to be a hell of a battle. I think Michigan's D is very similar to that of 97', except the standout players are up front and not in the secondary like we had with Woodson. Michigan's D is too strong for OSU. GO BLUE!!

The 69 game was the greatest U-M/OSU game ever. Woodey Hayes told Bo after the game "G** Damn you, that is the biggest win you will ever have" Recentley Bo said it still was. You're right we don't have Woodson, but Leon Hall is the best CB we've had since the legendary No. 2 was here. Classic quote by U-M SS Barringer.. Michigan safety Willis Barringer , when asked what he would say if someone said Tressel has Carr's number: "He should call him sometime." Oh yeah on Cold Pizza (Worst show ever) they are about to have Jay Feeley (97 U-M National Champion kicker), and Nuggent (2002 OSU National Champion Kicker) talk about that game together. I think it should be pretty entertaining.

All of them As far as this alleged letter, how are UM campus police going to be operating in Columbus? That's just slightly out of their jurisdiction. That's what I thought, too. But I mean it's illegal for them to come down and carry out their police duties so either they worked something out or they're just there as support for the fans. Many UM fans I've talked to described how the Columbus police just don't give a s*** about what happens to Michigan fans' property. One guy had his car almost tipped over and the officers they tried to talk to just told them they shouldn't have driven a car with Michigan stuff to Ohio. The e-mail said to call them for non-emergency situations. Maybe that gives some insight as to what role they'll play at the game. Manny, what time is Cold Pizza on? I stopped watching after two of the hosts talked about how much they liked OSU more than Michigan a couple weeks ago. mannysBETTER3434 1 Report post Posted November 14, 2006 Cold Pizza is on right now, Feeley/Nuggent haven't been on yet, but I think they're up next. Gotta love Chris Perry (or maybe not?) "It's a blowout," Perry said. "Ain't no ifs, ands or buts about it. (Defensive tackle Alan) Branch is going to knock the stuffing out of - what's his name - Troy Smith. You all set that (Heisman Trophy talk) up anyway. That's some BS to begin with. "He shouldn't even win the Heisman. He's not going to win his league or the national championship. We all know what's going to happen. We're going to win it. It's been long overdue. Tressel's been cheating. So, hey, we're going to keep it real. There ain't nothing else to say." Happy Pancake 6 Report post Posted November 14, 2006 http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news;_ylt=Al...e&type=lgns Article on tickets for the game. At the bottom of the article they also talk about some Michigan fans who haven't pursued getting tickets because of things that have happened to UM fans in the past. Nice. So f*** off already with this "terrorist" bulls***. I'd like to know who of you has ever had a bad experience. My dad and grandpa both have. He said even if I'm 40 years old, and in perfect shape he will not allow me to go. Said if he was offered free 50 yard line tickets to this game he would turn them down even if he had to watch the game on a 5 inch, black/white TV. Actually my grandpa thought he would give the horseshoe a second chance in 2000, but he never even made it to the game due to buckeye students driving him off the road, and threating to beat him up if he didn't turn around. Or maybe this video helps explain things http://www.dispatch.com/multimedia/multime...10/22/2002.html

Hockeytown Red Wings 245 Report post Posted November 15, 2006 (edited) No colleges are terrorists.......not even Miami. You're in a U-M enviorment you have to expect a little of it. Of course, I just dont think most of these incidents have occured from OSU students. I dont want to be lumped in with the average ******* Joe who gets drunk and hurls obscenities at opposing fans. As long as an opposing fan is being respectful, I enjoy talking to them and welcoming them. It's a little different this week of course because you are our never-ending rival of recriprocated hatred, but I'm not about to abuse any Michigan fans either. It's just the eye-rolling and media portrayal of OSU fans has gotten a little old. Yes we're passionate, maybe too passionate. But Ohio State football is the only thing around Columbus. Besides the Blue Jackets, we dont have professional sports around like Ann Arbor does. It's football crazy state and we're in the heart of it, some people take it too far, and they are embarassing to us, but we're not the only ones. Make all the jokes you want, thats part of the rivalry and part of what it makes it so fun. I enjoy it, I'm just getting annoyed at some of the s*** I've been hearing lately, maybe because it pisses me off that a lot of stupid s*** has actually happened on our behalf, but we're not bad people and a majority of us would be more than respectful. My feelings about Michigan are much like what Vince Vaughn's character says to Will Ferrell's in Anchorman as he's holding the ladder at the end. "I hate you with every fiber of my being, but damnit, I respect you." What's with Chad Henne saying Michigan deserves to win this game? How can you deserve to win a game you haven't played?
