Howe's Bony Elbow

MLive: Forsberg talk heats up, deal "in days"?

It also doesn't make sense to me for the Wings to pick up another playmaking centre over a goal scoring winger.

Go after a top guy like Guerin or Tkachuk and then maybe some 2nd tier guys like Roberts, Sanderson or Kapenen.

It makes a hell of a lot of sense considering we're talking about Ken Holland. And it makes even more sense knowing that the Wings could effectively replace Lang with Forsberg and easily ship off Lang to either Atlanta or New York, both who would love to have him. Even if the Wings do nothing else, Forsberg instead of Lang anchooring the 2nd line is an improvement in anybody's book and the fact that wed have the cap space to sign someone else afterwards can only push matters forth.

Vancouver doesn't have the space to deal for him I dont think. Anyway, you don't need to screw around with the Zetterberg line if we get Forsberg. That's almost the point. It'd take a lot of weight off their shoulders for the playoffs to know that Forsberg is on the second line and powerplay.

Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom

Cleary-Forsberg-Samuelsson

Forsberg would do wonders for Cleary and Samuelsson.

Cleary and Forsberg :scared::thumbup:

K, so here's my question. Say the Wings offer the best deal for Forsberg and Philly's all set to ship him to Detroit, but Kenny can't pull the trigger on a Lang deal. Would/should the Wings turn down Forsberg and keep what they have, or just load up on centers and maybe move someone to a wing?

i get an eery bottomless feeling in the pit of my stomach that says that this years block busting deadline deal will be a huge flop like last years push to sign...

CORY CROSS.

wow. exciting. oh wait the guy barely played and was useless. i know were all just speculating here, but with the cap space and the loss of two of the greatest wings of the last 10-15 years over the summer, wings fans and the players themselves deserve something to get excited about.

yes this team is good, but a key guy or two could make it great. and good teams dont win cups. they win the presidents trophy and go down in the first round....

We don't deserve anything. If simply being a Wings fan isn't enough, with all the history and great moments in the past, quality teams in the present, and expectations of good things in the future, then we really are spoiled.

And I'm not worried about this deadline being a flop. Last year there wasn't any talk this early, unless you count all our wishful thinking about Brendan Witt. Ooooooo goody. This year, rumors are flying.

The same could have been said about Zetterberg and Datsyuk, had we not taken a chance on them.

...not really, Datsyuk and Zetterberg were both on the Wings their first professional season, neither of them spent a minute in GRR. Hudler on the other hand...

...nice trade rumors going on, I love this time of year!!!

...hell it ain't our money!!!

You do realize that in the weeks/months leading up to the trade deadline that Holland repeatedly stated that he was only going to do minor tinkering with depth if he did anything, right?

Right?

Yes, Cory Cross was "underwhelming", but outside of Witt (who's price was far too high) there wasn't a lot out there last year that would've greatly benefited the Red Wings considering what they were looking for.

This year is an entirely different matter.

Agreed.

This year will be a much better indication of Holland's ability to close a deal, because the players are out there.

get him so nashville doesn't get him. that's what i say.

think about this-what if, and i'm just curious about the reaction to this-he basically stays out all season due tothe ankle, doesn't do anything, but comes back and just OWNS in the playoffs and we win a cup.

That's what I'm saying....ARMS RACE, AHOY!

Dats and Zata had a clause in their contract stating they would play in the NHL or in their home country.

Hudler was 22 when he became a full-time NHLer. Zetterberg was the same age. Datsyuk was 23.

Datsyuk and Zetterberg got to play with actual scorers in their rookie seasons. Hudler has been played on the fourth line pretty exclusively, despite showing excellent scoring touch and the ability to make plays.

According to this report the Flyers asking price is two 1st round picks and a prospect. I don't see anybody paying that price, although Forsberg would be worth it if you could guarantee his health, and sign him to a long-term deal. The kicker is the injury problems.

that's a lot of future to be giving up for somebody who's basically a rental. the wing's won't be able to sign him in the off season. (not to mention his injurty problems)

do you really want Keith Tkachuk on the Wings?

i think hes pretty old and washed up.

I don't think 34 is old. I think Keith is exactly what the Wings need. He's a big physical prescence up front, and he's a goal scorer. What more could you want?

a little off topic but...

as many mistakes as the NHL (or the scapegoat Bettman) makes, one of the best things in my mind is the prorated contract. I dont know if other leagues use this, but without it, i see no midseason transactions, and especially none where a contender can add a solid top 6 forward, top 4 defense, or starting goalie without giving up really anything on the current roster. lets hope the wings take advantage of this! Forsberg or no Forsberg, something needs to be done because i dont see this team as it stands today winning 2 series.

It's only a waste if he's hurt and we trade away a great player. If we get rid of some player who doesnt pan out and Floppa plays like crap, we're not really out anything.

If Floppa plays like crap, we are certainly out something---we could have gotten a better player in his place!!!!! Were you really serious writing this?

He's scored all of 18 goals this year, and he's overweight and overpriced. We could do much better.

Lots of people have brought up the "we need him!!--- he's an awesome player when he isn't injured!!!" argument. Well, the injury problem IS an issue, and it is THE issue. One wouldn't say, "WOW, if that Ferrari would stop breaking down every 10 miles, it'd be a GREAT car! Let's get it!"

We don't deserve anything. If simply being a Wings fan isn't enough, with all the history and great moments in the past, quality teams in the present, and expectations of good things in the future, then we really are spoiled.

Agreed--lots of Wings fans are hideously spoiled. Same goes for the Pistons, whose forums were full of fans saying that the team sucked after it lost in game 6 of the conference finals against Miami. Uhm, okay. Go root for the Celtics instead.

Tkachuk is not old and washed up... I seriously don't understand where some of you get this crap, it's probably just because you don't like the player personally so they must be crap all-around. Tkachuk would be a prime candidate for us to get, he's not afraid to hit, will stick up for his teammates at all costs, and can score. When you bring up the 18 goals thing, it's really a non-point since he plays for St Louis, Guerin has 22, not THAT much better...

We would only benefit from having Tkachuk on our team over Williams especially. If we were to at the very least trade for Tkachuk and Lapointe, well, we would be in much better shape heading into the playoffs.

It is apparent after watching the Flyers game that we seriously need some toughness, because we won't make it past the first round without it. Teams like Anaheim and San Jose will own us as is. I am counting on Holland to add the strength we need. Bertuzzi, Tkachuk, Guerin, or Horton should be coming in at least. And on top of that I think we should push for Lapointe to play with Draper and Franzen/Maltby.

I still would love Forsberg, but only if we sign one of the guys listed above as well to add some more toughness to this squad of nancy's - seriously, we don't even stick up for our goaltender or star players when they get run or knocked around, it's getting really old now.

Toughness etc. I think we can do better than Tkachuk.

Nice to see you around here again.

From HF Boards:

Pierre Mcguire was on a radio station yesterday and he said expect Forsberg to be traded, probably by Wednesday, and that Detroit is probably not leading the pack in terms of who will get him.

Also says that the Flyers are trying to create a bidding war and it is not working.
