puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted February 12, 2007 That was completely uncalled for. Not that I am particularly surprised by this. I am not sure three games was enough -- except that it punishes the Sens more than it does Emery, and they undoubtedly do not condone his actions in this case. Emery could have really hurt that guy, so he got off easy, IMO. Ray, Ray...
shadow47 1 Report post Posted February 12, 2007 (edited) Emery sucks...that was a vicious swing that connected...had he not been wearing a visor that would've been on par with McSorley vs. Brashear. Three games is sufficient but five would've been better. Edit: Puckloo, I believe we posted at the same time here. Glad to know we're on the same page with this one. Ray is a very good goaltender, but he needs to grow up. He can do that, and still keep his personality -- and not be such a thug. Very unattractive!
Rivalred 630 Report post Posted February 13, 2007 http://youtube.com/watch?v=M_k4nIkW2Ck oh my... he must have really been pissed on Habs By that video, Habs player lost his balance and when he was falling, his stick hit Ray's arm, it looked like a accidental slash, which it was while Ray was making a save... Now, from Ray's point of view, he is making a save and has his head turned.... A player is coming to get a rebound and slash's his arm, but he does not know it was on accident.... I am sure anyone else would react the same way.... It seems more like a smack to the face with the goalie stick than anything else....

russianswede919293 95 Report post Posted February 13, 2007 Ray Emery is not a bad goalie at all, but he is INSANE... puckloo I agree with you on this one, it really does punish the Sens more and they have to be getting tired of all his crap. The guy is a great young goalie but he already has a horrible track record. He has been asked to remove Mike Tyson from his mask, to which he called the league racist, when it is obvious they asked him to remove it for the fact that Tyson is a convicted rapist. He slashed Lapierre, He got in a fight with a forward in the AHL and was quoted saying he wanted to fight Lapierre as well...Earth to Ray, goalies shouldn't be trying to get in fights with forwards. He really needs to get himself under control because he could truly be a #1 goalie for the Sens for years to come.
wingslogo19 281 Report post Posted February 13, 2007 Well im going to give a 2 star for the acting on Lapierre... It wasn't a really hard swing, and i've taken tougher shots than that, without a visor on... 1 game would of been just fine but 3 i think is abit much.. Even Guy said he would of been happy with just the 1 game and that's something coming from him... But i do agree it wasn't called for, one of his players should of jumped him
FinWing 26 Report post Posted February 13, 2007 The suspension is well-deserved but if someone came slashing one of our goalies like that, I'd love to see someone do something. Hasn't been happening much this season.
interminded 1 Report post Posted February 13, 2007 The kid made a big mistake and got punished. I don't see the problem. Emery has above-average talent to become a great goaltender. Screwing up is all part of the process..
Detroit Dead Things 0 Report post Posted February 13, 2007 This is so stupid becuase emery should have either fought maxim or have been givin a higher supension. 3 games does not set an example but 6 or 9 games would be more appropriate. If any player on ottawa had done the exact same slash then they would have gotton maybe 4 minutes or a game misconduct.

Lapierre is fine and the slash did not connect to the full extent. One game is what they should have given him based on the situation with Max being okay. That one game would send the message that needs to be sent, dont swing your paddle at people's faces.
OsGOD 3 Report post Posted February 13, 2007 ah what the hell... I have seen our goales countless times come rushing out to the top of the circle to two-pad stack slide tackle opposing players... Causing the players to land awkardly on the ice as they fly over them... No pentalites just praise for a "talented" play. Move along... Nothing wrong with adding a little grit to the game back near the net. The player was uninjured and able to still play the game.

Even Guy said he would of been happy with just the 1 game and that's something coming from him... But i do agree it wasn't called for, one of his players should of jumped him Yeah but I think the point is that you shouldn't hit somebody in the face with your stick. The fact that he had a visor on and that it wasn't a baseball bat type of swing ought not to come into play. If Lapierre had no visor on, even a not so heavy swing could've landed the heel or even toe of his stick smack into Lapierre's eye and we'd all be in here trying to defend our sport again because some player blinded another one with an intentional stick to the face. I'd love to be fly on the wall when Campbell works out suspensions because the whole decision making process befuddles me. So long as hockey continues to punish people based on the severity of the damage to the victim instead of on the act itself, this league will never be serious about punishment, will never be serious about protecting its players and will never be taken seriously by the mainstream sports world at large. It doesn't take much for an innocent looking slash or well placed cheap shot to go from being just another 2 minute penalty to being another Bertuzzi/Moore incident. 3 games for a slash to the face? The league is a joke when it comes to this stuff. It polices its stars differently than everybody else and it leaves so much grey area that every single suspension is debated ad nauseam. Emery was careless with his stick. He may not have intended to hit him in the face but he intended to hit him with his stick which last time I checked wasn't kosher to begin with. He took a swipe at a guy intentionally and simply because the guy isn't in the hospital its 3 games. I don't understand it and don't think I ever will but my opinion is that the league is a joke when it comes to this stuff. Nothing wrong with adding a little grit to the game back near the net. The player was uninjured and able to still play the game. There's a big difference between those two things. We're talking about intentionally hitting someone in the face with your stick. What our goalies have done is not in violation of the rules, nor is it a blatant attempt to hurt someone. Slashing someone in the face with your stick is reckless, and if not for the visor he could have been seriously hurt. Gritty play is welcome and there is obviously always risk for injury in hockey. However, there are penalties against things like slashing and spearing for a reason. So long as hockey continues to punish people based on the severity of the damage to the victim instead of on the act itself, this league will never be serious about punishment, will never be serious about protecting its players and will never be taken seriously by the mainstream sports world at large.
