Can We Just Make Brett Hull the Commissioner Already?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I'm just watching Brett Hulls intermission report on fighting and once again, I'm wanting to put this guy in Bettmans seat...screw contracts and legalities...Brett Hull knows the game, he's got starpower, he's not afraid to say what's on his mind, he's a player and a great one at that, his dad was a great player...Hockey's in his blood. More than anything though, he has a vision of where the league needs to be in order to succeed.

Those who think it wouldn't work usually cite the likelihood that he lacks the business understanding to be commissioner, and I wouldn't really disagree, but I also believe he's smart enough to put together a staff of people best suited to handle that aspect of the job. I believe a staff of NHL execs lead by Hull would bring some of the former glory and tradition back to the game as well as carving a new, definitive path for the NHL to become a successful sport in America and the rest of the world.

Bring Shanahan into the mix in a few years as well to get more former players taking ownership for the direction of the game and hockey becomes a more exciting sport that in time will become viable to the fickle American public. The businessmen just haven't been able to make it happen.

I know it's been said a thousand times, but I needed to get this out today. Hull sure isn't perfect but I'd be so much more excited about the NHL with him at the helm.

I think a big reason they separate players from the league's leadership positions is the division between NHL and NHLPA. None of the board of directors would trust a player to be fully impartial on monetary matters.

Oh, I think Hullie would bring in better ratings.

Does Hull even have a degree?

He has a degree in kicking ass and being the RADDEST GUY EVER!!!

I printed it out today and sent it to him.

i may not agree that Hull should be the commissioner, but i agree with the fact that bettman has to go....someone with a hockey background and love should be in his shoes....NHL is hockey first and a business second and bettman has it in a reverse order....IMPEACH BETTMAN....

I do wish they would at least consult more with former players on changes to the game. Hull, Messier, Lemieux, Yzerman. There's a glut of former greats right now who would bring respected opinions.

Heh--we've already ruled out Gretzky.

If you guys have a complaint about rules or officiating, you have no complaint with Bettman.

That stuff is the domain of Colin Campbell, not Bettman. His job is the business side of things, not the hockey side of things.

Doesn't Campbell answer to Bettman?

As for Hullie as commissioner, I just don't think he'd have the... em, diplomacy required for the position. Hulls better when he's able to speak his mind.

He was also one of the ones complaining in recent years about how ugly the game has gotten, how scoring was down, how there's too much clutching and grabbing, how the skill guys couldn't show their talent. A lot of people wrote him off, saying he's a lazy player that couldn't hack it. And Bettman kept up his standard ignore the obvious tactics "the game is fine. fans love it. We're as popular now as ever."

Then as soon as there's a lockout they overhaul the whole thing to reduce clutching and grabbing. <_<

It would be nice if they'd consult guys like Hull once in a while...

Campbell is the guy in charge of the on-ice product. Yes technically Bettman is his boss, but Bettman doesn't have major involvement in things like rules and officiating, or player discipline. That stuff is all handled in Campbell's office. Bettman's job deals primarily with things such as CBA negotiations, TV deals, and the like. The off-ice business stuff is why Bettman has his job in the first place. He was hired to run the business side of the league because when the league had a president handling both sides, and the business side was run by a hockey guy, the business side was run like crap.

What the hell difference does that make?

Actually what I would like to see happen, is the comish lose all authority on all aspects of the game. You can let him still negotiate and do all those legal and asskissing duties Bettmen is known for. Just don't let him have any say on how the game should be played.

Instead they should make the compettition committee in charge of the on ice product. That committee should consist of a retired player (Hull), the head ref, and an active player voted on by the NHLPA who should be Shanahan for the time being.

We all know how much that helped the game during the lockout. Why not have this three person committee be the judge of proposed changes brought up by the NHLPA or the owners?

I think that would be alot better then Bettman making snap calls and then getting the owners to push it through.

We have to do this before they suceed and increase the size of the nets!!

Presumably, it signifies that the person has an understanding of the business. What expertise does Hull have in negotiating CBAs et al.?

It's not like it's Bettman's job to lounge around all day and think of new rules for the game. "We need more fighting" is Brett's bright idea, okay, let's make him commish? Silly. You don't just get to make proclamations on how the game should be run and make it so.

To think, the issue was actually raised at the GM get together a week ago and they didn't get rid of it. No need for Brett here.

Well, Bettman was hired and answers to the NHL owners and they are most certainly (as a majority) business first and hockey second, so I am not sure you could have it any other way.

I thought this is what is sort of already happening.

I am not sure of many snap calls Bettman has made and then got the owners to push it through, can you elaborate on what items you are talking about?

He may not have major involvement, but ultimately he's the guy at the top and the one responsible for the on-ice product of the NHL.

Like with the schedule vote among the owners. That was a business and a game-related decision. Bettman was either unwilling or incapable of swaying one vote to fix a schedule that is universally hated by all (except 11 cheap ass owners). Even worse, in his infuriating fashion, he lies to us fans with a straight face claiming no one could agree on a better alternative, when 19 owners had agreed on just that.
