When Lang leaves this summer...

I want Lang to re-sign with us, but definitely not at his current salary, but I really don't imagine another team will sign him either for that much, so it is a possibility.

I *do* think it's funny that everyone's all: "Oh, he was so good on the other team..." ha ha. Wow, is the grass EVER greener outside of Detroit. Like Whitney...he played on the third and fourth line here, and never got a chance to shine here with all the talent we had.

I can't wait till we get our next player that can be the next disappointment.

Agreed, except Lang is not playing on the third or fourth line like Whitney did. Whitney was never given a chance and was fighting injuries. Lang has been given a chance, and has not battled injuries, and is still not performing. If he wants to be that way, then I say give the ice time to Hudler and Filppula, two much more deserving candidates.

Langer has been really streaky this year.

when he's putting up numbers he's an amazing passer with great hockey sense and a hard wrister

when he's in a bit of a slump, he's a total bum who doesn't skate.

one thing he MUST not do in a few weeks:

NO MORE HOOKING PENALTIES LANGER!

Langer's usually either worthless or amazing in the season. No in between. But, the last couple playoffs, he's been MONEY for the Wings. He's been good when it's counted. And, I could give a s*** how he does in the season if he impresses in the playoffs again.

I sort of agree. Bob has brought home the bacon in the playoffs and I agree that that's the most important thing, but seeing this guy float and fail to give an honest effort on nights is still a killer.

I'd love to see a deal involving Lang and Gomez and honestly I could really see that happening.

This is impossible due to the deadline having passed, Lang being a UFA, and Gomez still having another year left on his deal.

Not impossible, could re-sign Lang and then make a trade.

Which one imagines would also be a concern from the Wings' end as well...

No matter. It's not really up for discussion if we don't know what Lang's salary is going to be.

I don't really know what I'm trying to justify here, because I agree with you that Detroit generally doesn't re-sign players and then trade them later on in the year.

The Wings have traded guys they have signed, but it will be later in the year. They won't sign somebody, and trade him off like some times might do. The Wings just aren't that way.

Sign him and trade him for Sergei near the end of the year....now that I can get on board for :D

Fedorov outshines Lang in every season.

If Lang does go, Filppula gets more ice at centre we get Grigorenko signed up and try and get Morozov over here for more scoring threat on the second line. Just my 2p worth.

Lang earns $3.8m and Flip is tied up for next year anyway. Not sure if Grigs will be tied to a rookies entry level contract, £1m say and we could get Morozov for $2.8m then we have 2 players in for the same cost as having Lang, but we just added more grit and scoring(hopefully)

Next year we have 16 ufa's on the books, I'm sure we'll cut ties with at least 4 of those which should open up enough monies to give Dats a fair deal and one the Wings are happy with to.

Who remembers the 'locker room reports' that were floated around about Babcock and Lang in late January? I doubt the reports are 100% accurate, but theres always some truth behind these things. I honestly don't think Lang wants to be here. He appears lazy every shift he's on the ice...he just looks like he's going through the movements until July 1st.

I doubt Kenny will be able to offer Lang enough cash to keep him here.

The Wings have enough room, assuming Lang and Maltby leave and every other forward stays, to add one forward up front. That won't be Grigorenko--he'll be in the AHL to start. It also won't be Morozov; 2.8m would bring a better forward anyway, and if they go shopping for a top six scoring forward they better get a guy who actually is good enough to play that role. Morozov isn't. The only new face we will see up front if Calder and Bertuzzi stick around is likely Matt Ellis or someone of his ilk.

How are you so sure Maltby will leave?

Maltby is redundant and overpriced. Franzen, Cleary, Draper, Zetterberg all can play better defense than Malts, and are better PKers. Filppula, Kopecky, and Datsyuk are also decent in those respects.

Maltby simply makes far too much for what he brings to the team, and he and Samuelsson are both pretty much redundant and not terribly useful. Maltby is well past his prime and the Wings would be better served with Ellis in the 13th forward role and Kopecky playing full time than Kopecky in the 13th role with Maltby playing full time.

Not that I don't appreciate what he brought to this team, but there's a point where you have to move on.

I'm sure if he wanted to play here again he'd take a major paycut. His point totals don't exactly spell "raise" anyways, so I doubt he'd make what he does now.

I'd rather buy out Samulesson and keep Maltby, since Maltby at least is an agitator. Unfortantly that probably won't happen, but that'd be the ideal case in my mind.

How much does Maltby make?

I personally think Lang needs to go. There are enough younger, more energetic and inspired players that can do much more than Lang for much less.

If you are willing to part with Lang so easily why on earth do you even ask about the amount Maltby is making? That should be a no-brainer for you.

Malts by far brings A LOT less to the team now than Lang does. If you want Lang gone there should be no wondering about Maltby's salary... you should want hiim gone regardless of his price tag.

Malts makes 1.4

Lang makes 3.8

But really, I don't think the debate is Lang's salary, or Maltby's. I pretty much think most agree he's overpaid and will definitely have to take a paycut to come back, which he may or may not be willing to do.

I doubt it. Lang and Babcock aren't exactly the best of friends as it is, so if Lang is going to come back it's going to be for top dollar. Which he is definitly not worth.

Maltby makes less than half of what Lang makes. The only debate on Maltby is he doesn't do as much as he used to. His salary is hardly an issue here, since if we kept Maltby at the same price and dumped Lang we'd have over 2 million in free cap room. I don't advocate keeping Maltby for what he makes at all right now, as it is too much, but you can't compare it to Lang at all. Lang may have 49 points, and that's ok, but his otherwise lazy and unenthusiastic play makes him not worth the money.
