Salviaman 104 Report post Posted June 27, 2007 Do we sign someone else like Souray to take his place, or is Kronwall ready to fill his shoes and show what he is made of? Discuss
FinRedWing 172 Report post Posted June 27, 2007 (edited) No thanks to Souray. I'd say that the best replacement for Schneids would be Kronwall AND Kindl . UFA's are asking (too) much these days, this would be a great opportunity to youthen up a little bit. We'd still be competitive IMO. Then we'd also have the $ to re-sign Markov (Or sign Sarich). Kronwall has done amazing things for Team Sweden and I admit that he hasn't shown his best yet in the NHL. I've never really understood why- lack of quality ice time? Get Sammy off the blue line and give Kronwall & Kindl valuable PP-minutes. Edited June 27, 2007 by FinRedWing
Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted June 27, 2007 You could come up with a number of options but within our org, I'd say if Kronner could stay healthy, he could do the job and then bring up either Quincey full time as your stay at home guy or give Kindl a tilt, but he'll need to be nursed along by Cheli I suppose. And if we don't re-sign Markov either then it will be down to the minors for replacements Lids Lilja Kronvall Lebda Chelios Kindl Quincey I think that Quincey and Kindl could become a good 2nd line pairing down the line so how about them on the 3rd pairing and Cheli playing just on the special teams. SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted June 27, 2007 Do we sign someone else like Souray to take his place, or is Kronwall ready to fill his shoes and show what he is made of? Discuss Kronwall is ready IMO, he just needs to have a little more luck on his side. I'm netural on the possiblity of signing Souray. If the Wings do, then great, but if not, it'll give guys like Krownall and Quincey more PT.

Cicada 4 Report post Posted June 27, 2007 i'm of the opinion we don't need to resign schenider or markov.. i like the look of Lids - Lilja Kronwall - Lebda Chelios - Kindl / Quincy.. i see 7 NHL capable defensemen there. I'd much prefer to spend our cash on getting a 2nd line with some actual ability

I'd much prefer to spend our cash on getting a 2nd line with some actual ability I gotta say that I agree with the thoughts on Markov...I wasn't that impressed with him to want to pony up a lot more money. Schneids is a tougher one (for me) as I like him a ton...but I'd almost rather spend some of his cash on some more goal scorers.

spydrwebb 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2007 perhaps a better heading would be WHEN schneider signs elsewhere... i say you go with what you have. we need to be careful about what we spend, especially considering that we need to be poised in a few years to make hank a wing forever. quincey was amazing in the playoffs, kindl has all kinds of upside, and as has been mentioned several times over in these threads... the UFA is out of hand, people are sick in the head with their salary demands. Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted June 27, 2007 I say Kindl! Sure he may not QUITE be ready yet but he's a big guy and I say fast track his development and let him learn from playing alongside Lidstrom and Chelios.
LIDDYGIBBY5 1 Report post Posted June 27, 2007 I say Kindl! Sure he may not QUITE be ready yet but he's a big guy and I say fast track his development and let him learn from playing alongside Lidstrom and Chelios. Reports said the he almost made the team out of camp last year. He had an entire season to mature. I think that he is going to be a regular on the blue line this year if Schneider doesn't come back, and I think that the D will still be quite good. I gotta say that I agree with the thoughts on Markov...I wasn't that impressed with him to want to pony up a lot more money. Schneids is a tougher one (for me) as I like him a ton...but I'd almost rather spend some of his cash on some more goal scorers. Markov is an excellent Defensemen! He is steady as they come. He isn't going to make the remarkable play, but he isn't going to have to becuase he is usually right where he is supposed to be ahead of time. The only thing that needs to be decided is how much is that worth, and is there anyone already with the club who can do the same thing?

I'd much prefer to spend our cash on getting a 2nd line with some actual ability 7 NHL capable D? WTF? Kindl hasn't even't played a second in the NHL yet he's NHL ready? Quincy has never played a regular season in full and had limited time in the playoffs. He looked pretty good but an 82 game season with more minutes has the tendency to expose weaknesses of you d-men. On you list I see 3 guys I don't need to worry about (Lids/Chely/Lils), I see 1 guy who hasn't played for more than a couple months without getting injured year after year after year, I see Lebda who'll probably be fine and 2 rookies one of which has never played in the NHL. Sorry dude, we need another veteran defenseman.
Opie 308 Report post Posted June 27, 2007 I am not sure we NEED another veteran D-man but I would feel a whole hell of a lot better with one. Rafalski would be awesome, rafalski and hamrlik would be a wet dream!!
OsGOD 3 Report post Posted June 27, 2007 Arrr, who do we pick up? A forward who can score on the powerplay in May/june as well as away from his home rink. Gar. 7 NHL capable D? WTF? Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted June 27, 2007 Lilja is not good enough to be in the top 6. He wont have a spot on this team this year till Kronwall goes down. Lidstrom-Sarich/FA Kronwall-Schnieder/FA Chelios-Lebda Quincey-Lilja Hes as far down on the list as you can get
BringHomeTheCup! 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2007 If Matty doesn't sign here, it will be because Detroit wasn't offering enough $$. In such case how would that in any way suggest that Souray is any sort of option? He will get more than Matty. If Matty isn't re-signed, I would like to see a couple of guys signed, Rafalski would be huge, and as I've said before De Vries would fit very well here. That boy has a heart that bleeds redwings, no question where he signs. The wings won't spit in his face by any measure, but he won't need a Philly contract either. Rafalski and De Vries are both viable options, but don't rule Souray out. While I don't like the idea of spending a bunch of money on Souray, but if he sees us as a potential route to a cup ring, then he'd likely be willing to come here at a discount. Guys who still haven't drank from the cup are more likely to come to hockey town then mercenaries.

However, Souray will get paid regardless of where he signs. I would be willing to bet that Souray at a discount would still cost the same, if not more than Matty's ceiling. Opie 308 Report post Posted June 27, 2007 i agree. That play was all over VS for about a week, however they only kept showing Dats deke out both the D and Rolly. What I thought was far more impressive was how clean and vicious that hit was. Markov Played well and I really would like to have him back in detroit again. But alas, that is Kenny's, not my, decision.

BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted June 27, 2007 You know, well I sit and ponder about this, I realize two things; 1) The 7 we'd have without Markov and Schneider do not seem good enough to be a stable defensive cast. 2) Kindl needs to get an opportunity, as does Quincey. So what the hell do we do? Do we trade? Do we sign a UFA? I don't know, I don't seem too satisfied with the 7 we'd have, but I want Kindl and Quincey to play regularly.
