last time i checked.. points is what puts the W's in the win column not experience and "view of the ice"

Faceoffs, leadership, historical value, experience. Plus he's the first onto the ice. I say he's still get it. Maybe not the it of 10-15 years ago, but which of us do? He's still got it enough to be a contributing player and truly earning $1mil/year for 3 years at least.

The guy's worth it. Time to put the plume to the old parchmetorooni.

This discussion has gone on many times in the last few years. People need to understand the following:

you have scoring forwards and defensive forwards

you have puck moving defensemen and stay at home defensemen

the defensive forwards and defensemen will sometimes contribute on offense, like Draper does with his insane speed to breakout. But his move valuable contribution to this team is killing penalties and shutting down the other team's top lines.

When you reach a level of play that's the highest in the world there isn't one guy who can do it all the best. You have specialists who are great at one or two things. All the other major sports have these people and their niche in the team is as valuable as any other.

We need a guy like Draper who does what he does. Someday there will be some other guy doing the same thing, hopefully he will do it just as well as Draper.

So, I agree with all that, but here is my main issue with some of the views on Draper. This has been my view on Draper prior to the 03/04 season and probably the view of many: Draper was a very speedy guy, great on faceoffs and a great penalty killer, a grinder, he was definately a valuable piece of the team. He was the type of guy that would get you 10-15 goals, 15-30pts. Then in the 03/04 season, he scored 24 goals and had 40 points (injury reduced number of games as well). He also won the Selke that year.

So at that point, there were many, not all, who probably inflated Draper's value beyond where it should really be. He's very good at what he does and the team needs players like that, but some have rated him much higher than that due to his 03/04 season due to his scoring that year. Now that he has come back down to the 10-15 goal range, some still keep him up at the inflated status and simply say that scoring isn't his primary role on the team and if he does, that's just a bonus (which I totally agree with....if Draper has 0 pts, he's still valuable, but IMO, just not to the extent some have placed him since 03/04.)

Ok, I just wanted to point this out. Right before my post the number of replies was 33. I just thought it was odd that the topic was about Draper and the number of replies matched his number. But I ruined it sorry. Ummm, Draper is sick and I think we should pay his as much as he wants for as long as he can play.

toby, you bring up a really good point about salary. I didn't mention salary, just the value of what guys like Drapes do.

I agree, he's been a bit overpaid the last few seasons. If he made 1.25 mil a year for the next 3 I think that would be perfect.

I believe Draper is one of the core guys on the team. He comes to play every night, and I would love to see him finish his career here in Detroit. I think the younger guys on the team look up to Draper for guidance. If it were up to me Draper would be wearing the 'C' instead of Nick. Draper deserves the 3 year deal, and the 'C'.

As much as I like Draper and appreciate everything he's done, I don't think he's entitled to finish his career in Detroit. I prefer they sign him to one year deals. Just because the Wings allowed one veteran to finish his career in Detroit, doesn't mean they should all the veterans to finish their career in Detroit. It looks like the Wings might have started a bad trend by letting the one veteran finish his career Detroit even though he really didn't earn it. Now the Wings have a bunch of veterans that want to follow suit. I sure hope the Wings don't retire Draper's number and the other veterans ike they did for the veteran player that just retired in 06. Hopefully the wings don't become number retirement happy because they retired one of the veteran's numbers.

A 3 year deal would be perfect. Draper is such a big part of our success. In all honesty, I wanna see Drapes retire in the Winged Wheel.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Completely clueless. Possibly the most ignorant member on LGW. Some of the things he says just completely shocks me. Which is why Im sure he's doing it for shock value alone. His handle is Yzer19, yet all he does is diss and put down Steve Yzerman. Then proceeds to rip other key heart and soul players. This dolt is the same guy that said Lidstrom deserves a retired jersey over Steve Yzerman. And then also said that Yzerman should have LOST his captaincy when we got Chelios.:blink: This is the kind of kid I would wanna knee in the head if I ever met him in person. lol

That's fine by me. Draper is one of the charecter guys on the Wings right now. He's the best faceoff man in the league (next to Yanic Perrault), and his defensive ability and speed are great assets to have. Although he has absolutley no hands at all, his job isn't to score goals, so that's not an issue.

Glad to see the Wings getting ready to lock him up. He's still a good player.

Your Yzerman bashing is strangely similar to a certain Jamie that used to post here. I wonder if there is any truth to these comparisons...

Wasn't this a contract year for Drapes?

Exact same thing I thought! In fact, there is almost no doubt in my mind that this is Jamie. No way anyone else is that hockey-retarded.

Impossible, the minimum salaries for the next 3 years would be $475k, $500k and $500k. Also, we won't get the minimum. I think the Wings will either pay him more than he deserves or he'll accept slightly less than he deserves, not sure why I think that, I just do.

I think he still has some left in the tank, but he certainly should not be signing for $2+ million.

475, 500, 500

done

oh my god i am having flashbacks. Jamie would be Julie and/or Terry on the detnews board and the mlive board.

exact same writing style

Come on, you guys don't seriously believe that Lidstrom isn't more deserving of having his number retired? Lidstrom has had the better career, he's won more awards, and he's the better captain.

As for Chelios deserving the captaincy when he first became a Red Wing, let me ask you this. Which player is still on the team? Chelios, enough said.

Yzerman had the better career, and is a much better captain. You want to use your ignorant s***, then so will I, Who's won more cups as captain of the team? YZERMAN.

The comment about Chelios is probably the most stupid thing I've ever heard, Yzerman was playing on 1 KNEE for years, he couldnt go anymore, Chelios is a freak of nature.

I do not know, how ANY person that calls themselve a Red Wing fan can hate Stevie Y.

Don't bother.

Yzer19 is really Jamie, who was an Yzerman troll that was banned here about 2 years ago. She goes around to different Red Wings forums and posts her hate messages about Yzerman. She went under the names Alexei and Spuds at the MLive forums, and was the one who posted the famous "Yzerman to St. Louis" rumor on the day of the Wings home opener in 2005 at MLive. She's been going around to various forums spreading hate about Yzerman.

I highly doubt she is in any way a Wings fan at all, since it's pretty strange that someone would hate the guy that basically turned this franchise around.

(I also referred to her as a girl, since that's what most people think. The true identity is unknown though, so it could be a guy also)
