revnic 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2007 I'm suprised no one posted this. Z moved ahead of Spezza with his 3 points tonight giving him 12 points in just 6 games! I hope he can keep this up and stay within the top 5 scorers. What do you guys think?

toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted October 15, 2007 No one probably posted it because they knew it was way too early to even talk about. Check and see who the leading scorer was last year early on. I think Sykora might have even been up there early on. Could Zetterberg lead the league by year's end? Sure, it's possible, but the more likley outcome is no. However, I do think he'll be closer to the top this year than last for a couple reasons: 1) I think he'll simply be better this year and 2) I think the Wings will lean on him a little more to provide it this year than in the past. WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted October 15, 2007 I'm a little worried honestly...Zetterberg is in a contract year and is absolutely tearing it up. If he lead the league in points, he can definitely squeeze out as much money from Holland as he wants, and Holland is going to have to give it to him since Hank is the cornerstone of this franchise. I would love to see Hank lead the league, but I would rather he tail off this pace a little just so his agent can't use that as leverage against us next year. Opie 308 Report post Posted October 15, 2007 This isn't the final year of his contract. Exactly, they are fast approaching the start or the negotiation period for RFA's but he is still under contract through next season.

datsyukismyfriend 4 Report post Posted October 15, 2007 i think people are jumping the gun a bit here. he's had a fantastic start, but to think he'll keep this pace up is unrealistic. you guys really think he's going to tally 164 point's this season? aside from lemieux and gretzky i don't think anybody's ever cracked 160. anyway, this could be a break out year for z, but i doubt very much he'll lead the league in scoring. i doubt he'll be top ten. i think our highest hopes would be that he got the selke, which i think is a definite possibility. Well yes, that's obvious as well But, even if he played 82 games and you prorate his ppg over 82 games, he still didn't come anywhere near the leading scorers last year. WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted October 15, 2007 (edited) This isn't the final year of his contract. You just made my day Heaton. I thought this was the last year we get the best two-way forward in the game at a price of $2.65M! Edited October 15, 2007 by WhiteLightning91

Opie 308 Report post Posted October 15, 2007 (edited) I predict Datsyuk ends up with more points than Z at the end of the season... I could see that, with the back issues I am sure Babs will keep an eye on Z and let him rest when he needs to. Plus if the two are playing together a lot they will factor in on each others goals, much like last night where all 3 on the line had a goal and assisted on the other's goals. Dats will probably play more, again as a precaution to keep Z healthy, and he will probably get more points as a result. On a side note, how funny was it to see a Dats check as one of the selected clips in the NHL highlight!!!!! Edited October 15, 2007 by Opie

Not that it matters, but just as a FYI, Z actually draws a $2.7 million salary this season and a $2.9 million salary next year. His cap number is $2.65, but he's actually making more than that. norrisnick 1 Report post Posted October 15, 2007 But, even if he played 82 games and you prorate his ppg over 82 games, he still didn't come anywhere near the leading scorers last year. Depends on which pace you decide to prorate. Z started out horrendously cold, but when the top line was put together he got progressive better week by week. If you prorate his pace from the 40 games they played together over the 19 games he missed, he'd have ended up with 94 points (11th in league scoring). If you take the last two months (25 games) and apply it to the 19 games he missed he'd have had 100 points (6th in league scoring). And if you're bold and take the final month (11 games) and apply it to the 19 games he'd have had 111 points (3rd in league scoring). And it's worth noting that he's kept up a pace to start this season that's not far off from the pace in the last calculation. Z has notched 17 goals and 20 assists in his last 17 regular season games. If he stays healthy and that line stays intact, he'll be top 5 in scoring.
