Holland to start talks with Ozzie for a multi year extension

Normally I would be concerned about rushing to judgment about a player based on a small sample of games in which he outperformed his career averages. But I don't think Ozzie's performance this year is a fluke. He's changed his style. Much more aggressive challenging shooters and playing a more traditional butterfly style. This suggests to me that he's adjusted his approach and it's making him a better goalie. If that's true, then expecting more good seasons from him seems like a pretty good bet.

Great news! Ozzy deserves a raise, though I don't see him asking for much. I really think Ozzy loves playing in Detroit and a multiyear contract at a reasonable price is his highest goal. I agree with an above poster, he has adapted his style to a solid butterfly and he is extremely confident in it, coming out to cut down angles. When he is in goal he seems not to scramble much at all, little wasted movement.

Keep it up Ozzy!

They're paying him peanuts right now (800K). He's probably going to want a raise. How about 1.1M a year for 3 years?

I know he's by no means young, but $1.1 per for 3 years is kind of a kick in the balls.

I know Ozzie is very much a team player who loves playing for the Wings more than anything, but with the way he's played since the last two months of last years regular season through right now, it wouldn't be a fair deal to offer him $1.1 per for 3 years. I know he'll take a home town discount (and probably more than he should), but I can see him signing for somewhere in the ballpark of 3 years/$1.75 million per.

I would ink that deal if I were Kenny.

So if Ozzie wins ten more games this season, and then averages 25 the rest of his career, he'll be at around 435 wins career-wise and about 350 in a Wings uniform. It's very possible that Osgood is the All-Time leader in victories for the Detroit Red Wings when he retires...something I was basically alone in thinking possible just six years ago.

 100%

We all know Ozzy will take a discount, cause he loves being a Red Wing. But that doesn't mean you shaft the guy who has played his heart out and been a classy character and fan favorite just because he is willing to do it.

Ozzie will be the starter next season, and deservedly so. Kenny, make him an offer he can't refuse - as if he would. Ozzie loves Detroit. :P

Indeed.

Ozzie loves Detroit and we love Ozzie !! :)

If Kenny would offer him a (let's say) 2 year deal for 1.8 mill, Ozzie would take it.

He's that kind of a nice guy.

But he deserves a raise though.

Don't be suprised however if other teams with sloppy goaltending will try to take him.

Think of Tampa, Pittsburgh, Colorado even.

Ozzie wouldn't do that people, so don't be alarmed !!!

The horror: Ozzie in a Lightning jersey....brrrr....

Furthermore, this will likely be the contract that puts Osgood over Terry Sawchuck's all-time wins record for the Wings. He deserves it and I have no doubts that they'll find a number that suits both parties just fine. I'm thinking between 1.5-2 million over 3-4 years.

It's a 37% raise over last season. I'd do cartwheels if my boss gave me a 37% raise.

I'd do cartwheels if I was making 37% of that 37% raise right now! Damn still being a college student!

1 year extension with the possibility of being a back up anything more would be ridiculous and we'd surely regret giving him a 3-4 yr deal down the road , no doubt

Whatever it takes to get Dom out of town, I'm all for it!

dom will start the playoffs ........ no offense guys your all brainwashed cause of the stats , a 3-4 yr deal will be a big mistake
