Elshupacabra 0 Report post Posted December 31, 2007 (edited) Caps' offer 'insults' Alex the Great ... Osgood nears extension with Wings OFF THE GLASS: The Detroit Red Wings are close to signing G Chris Osgood to a contract extension. The 34-year-old is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent July 1 and the club isn't sure if veteran Dominik Hasek, 42, will be back next season... From MLive The Red Wings have offered Osgood a three-year extension, but his agent, Rollie Thompson, said they still haven't decided on a term. A one-year, incentive-laden contract also is a possibility. Edited December 31, 2007 by Elshupacabra

A one-year, incentive-laden contract also is a possibility. "We're still talking,'' Thompson said. "Every time Ozzie gets a shutout or another win it makes it more interesting. We've been going back and forth quite a bit, trying to come up with what can work.'' The fact they offered Ozzie a 3 year deal sounds awesome ! Take it Oz !!! Bannedforlife 403 Report post Posted December 31, 2007 I think you guys missed the real surprise in that article. Once Osgood is signed, the Red Wings will turn their attention to defenseman Andreas Lilja, who's been offered a two-year extension. The club's desire to re-sign Lilja, who's been turnover-prone, might surprise some, especially since they have several young defensemen in their system (Derek Meech on the NHL roster; Kyle Quincey, Jonathan Ericsson and Jakub Kindl with AHL affiliate Grand Rapids). But Lilja has been a top-four defenseman for much of his three seasons in Detroit, he has good size (6-3, 220) and they're likely to get him at a reasonable price. He's in the final season of a two-year deal, earning $1 million.

interminded 1 Report post Posted December 31, 2007 it might also mean Chelios is moving on after this year. Don't think so. There's absolutely no indication that Chelios is planning to retire. He enjoys the game very much and still has much to offer to this team. I don't mind have Chris for another year.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted December 31, 2007 This is great news. Now we can finally trade Sammy for Ovechkin at the deadline. They're both about the same size, both European, both right-handed shots, and both love to shoot the puck. That seems like a win-win situation for both teams in my mind. I'm also glad about Ozzie. Who would have thought before the season that we'd be dying to have him re-signed.

I wouldn't be willing to add Lebbda into that deal but would be all for throwing in Lilja in that deal. I would think that Sammy and Lilja could really bring some hockey into the Verizon center in DC. OK maybe not, but at least they would be out of detroit and we could have AO. Oh, I wasn't refering to retirement and I agree that he has at least another season in him and will be a beast again in the playoffs. No what I was thinking was that now that Chicago's ownership has changed it wouldn't surprise me for him to do a farewell season or two back there. Not that I see it happening after so long but... If any players are worth 9-10 million it'd be the following - Crosby - Lecavalier - Thornton - Luongo - Heatley - OVECHKIN Subtract 2-3 years from Lidstrom's age, he'd be worth that too. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted December 31, 2007 Good for Ozzie. But re-signing Lilja is a mistake. Ovechkin is money hungry. Crosby took 8.7, Lidstrom took 7.45, Iginla took 8, Thornton, etc etc. While he may deserve 10 (as do the rest of the guys I've mentioned) he should take less so his team can win, but I dont think he cares about winning. NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted December 31, 2007 I hope so bad they sign Ozzie to a 3 year extension. I don't think I've ever been as confident with him in net as I've been this season. He's showing no signs of slowing and only playing better each time he hits the ice. On top of that, he'd be a great mentor for Jimmy if he is in fact that Wings' future. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted December 31, 2007 Iginla took 7, brah. Further proves my point, he took much less then market value to make his team better. And it probably would've worked out better if Kipper hadnt decided to take the season off, but oh well, he's been doing well as of late.

That's just it though it doesn't seem like Washington cares about winning, at least not for a couple more years. They have a ton of kids and only four guys that have contracts for more than 3 mil. 1 star, 2 or three good players and hope for the best. That's been thier MO since Jagr if not before from what I remember. I just don't see him staying there this offseason and keeping his contract demands high does one of two things. If the caps resigning them it proves how inept they are. If somebody else signs him, then he goes to a better team (in theory) and the caps get many draft picks. Working out better for both sides. Oh and I don't think that he'll break the 10 mil barrier, but somebody will in the near future.
