Chelios on McCarty: Maybe GR, Then The Wings

and who are you????

:rolleyes::blink:

He's someone who has a damn good point. It's kind of sad how desperate some people are to get McCarty back that they'll take Cheli's opinion as front-office gospel and completely ignore Mac's play in the past few years besides.

Chelios is a hockey player and an ex-teammate, not a GM.

I really think this will happen. I'm having flashbacks of Joe Kocur and I really think Mac will play in the NHL again, preferably with Detroit. Many people underestimate the will to play from a guy that ever since he left has pretty much hit rock bottom. He's out to prove people wrong, only 35 years of age, and if he's healthy, he could be a key playoff component. He was a proven playoff performer and always stepped it up a notch. You can't feel what the man is feeling right now - but you gotta believe that with a chance to become a Red Wing again - he is going to give it his all and not stop until he has to. I really believe he will play here once again. In fact, I'll be surprised if he doesn't.

If D can prove he is better than someone else, he gets their spot. If not, he doesn't.

That's the way it works all the time. The better unseats the lesser. Sure, he's getting the chance due to who he is, but he will have to do the work himself.

If he can improve the team, I want him back. If not, he'll still have a place in my heart.

I don't know if this was pointed out already, but I was listening to the interview on the way home from the office and when Chelios said the "Wings" part of it it was completely in a "you never know what can happen kind of thing" -- in the sense that there's 0.00000000000001% chance it will actually happen.

The Grand Rapids thing? Possibly -- but he's got to prove himself in Flint first.

Kudos for Draper extending the hand to help get Mac back in hockey.

Only 35 yrs old!?!. Thats 35 hockey AND rock n roll years, man, thats like 55 in layman's years. One of the problems with his training routine is that while Cheli is doing work outs with that trainer guy at 6:00 am, Mac is STILL out singing! While Cheli is ridin a bike in the sauna, Mac is STILL out gambling. While Cheli was out skating backwards and poke checkin, Mac was throwin and TAKING punches to the coconut.

I know what I feel like after playing in the beer league twice a week, I can't believe grown men can take the abuse of the NHL in the first place, it boggles my mind.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Mac's time with Detroit. And I loved all my former girlfriends, too, but that doesn't mean that I want them back.

Still waiting on the NHL to clear him.

True, Mac would bring some more fans in but I doubt he'd even get any playing time unless he drastically cleaned up his act and trained his heart out.

McCarty has been a childhood favorite of mine but I can't see him coming back to Detroit. But whether he does or not, he'll always be a Red Wing to me.

Lets remember one thing there are players all the time that have to rehab there ways back into a sport. For anyone to say that he is washed up or even never going to make it back to the wings is not a good statement. We as fans cant and shouldnt say that. I hope to god we can bring back one of the Best inforcers that the wings has ever had. Good Luck MAC.

As long as D-Mac can get his game back, I would love to see him in our system. Whether it be GR or the Wings. I know im being sentimental. But I don't care. Darren did so much for Red Wings hockey. And gave us hundreds of awesome memories. IMO that alone should earn him back into the organization in some way. I have my fingers crossed on this one. I hope Darren proves everyone wrong.

I can almost suspend my "let the past die please people" stance on this guy alone, though it is very hard for me to feel anything for a guy who literally blew millions. He may be a hockey legend, but come on. How pathetic does one have to be to have it made and blow it? However, I'm not hopeful it will really happen.

Apparently there's some new information on the McCarty situation.

Bob Duff:

According to a league source, McCarty met recently with the Red Wings' brass and a plan was outlined to see if he could fast track his way back to the big leagues.

It's a no-risk proposition for the Wings, who recognize that if McCarty, an unrestricted free agent, still has what it takes to play in the league, he gives them a physical presence and would make Detroit a much unfriendlier opponent.

The scenario is very familiar to the winter of 1996, when the Wings rescued Joe Kocur from the beer leagues of Michigan and installed him on a very effective checking line with Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby during Detroit's Stanley Cup wins of 1996-97 and 1997-98.

"He made our lives a lot easier," Draper said of Kocur's physical presence.

To add fuel to the fire, Mcarty was at the Avs game last night.....

"Appropriately for a game against Colorado, former Wing Darren McCarty was at Joe Louis Arena on Tuesday to see the Wings win, 1-0.

The IHL cleared the way for the former Red Wings grinder to resume his hockey career. The league Tuesday approved his contract with the Flint Generals, and McCarty is expected to make his debut on the road tonight against the Muskegon Fury.

McCarty, 35, who hasn't played since he was with the Flames in April and whose career has been plagued by injuries, is hoping to find another job in the NHL.

Asked what he would say if the Avalanche came calling, McCarty replied, "Beggars can't be choosy. One thing I've learned is, you never rule anything out."
