He's gonna get 50 goals in like 30 games, SICK JUST SICK. Kenny should be fired, the whole wings management should be fined by Illitch because of this. Matthias is gonna be the next great and we traded him, I are PIZZEDZZZZ. /sarcasm off. I cant wait to see how this goes over with everyone.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted January 20, 2008 Wow! Why can't the Wings ever have a guy like Mathias on our team.

Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted January 20, 2008 (edited) Come on Matthias, just drop the gloves now and make me throw up! He wont. For a big guy, he's not overly physical. But it'd be some funny to see him challenge someone like Erksine and get his ass handed to him, instead of throwing up, I'd just laugh! OsGOD 3 Report post Posted January 20, 2008 Any anybody actually believes this kid would see time of day in the NHL rotting away in Grand Rapids??? Getting traded out of the Wings org was a blessing for this kid... now he gets to actually play!
J-Swift 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2008 He wont. For a big guy, he's not overly physical. He does, however, possess more of a physical game now then when we drafted him. During TSN's World Junior coverage they talked about him quite a bit. Apparently one scout said he was the best all-around player in the CHL. Hindsight's 20/20, so I'm not really all that upset over the Bertuzzi deal, and I don't really blame Ken Holland for making it. But Matthias has made considerable progress since we dealt him, and I think we wound up losing out on that trade pretty badly.
Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted January 20, 2008 Both of his goals were Deflections in front of the net, and well taken too. Best of luck to the kid, like it has been said before, he's taken his chance and him being traded to Florida was a blessing in disguise for the kid. He now has 2 more goals than he would have got in Detroit.

But it'd be some funny to see him challenge someone like Erksine and get his ass handed to him, instead of throwing up, I'd just laugh! I sure hope not. The biggest thing ive wanted is a young Canadian in our core who will play physical and fight on occasion, aside from scoring. I just pray Matthias doesnt develop into that. Play soft Shawn...play SOFT!

Because Justin Abdelkader is coming along pretty nicely in that regard, and he's a better prospect than Matthias anyway.
e_mcgrath88 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2008 Relax... you cant win every trade. no GM can predict the future.. if they could, Datsyuk and Zetterberg wouldnt have been past over by every team in the nhl 6 times over.. its not like Matthias was expected to bloom the way he has...... get over it... I wont be TOO picky i guess, but i have to see what he does outside of college and in the minors. Well he certainly isnt a better prospect than Matthias NOW though... Well he certainly isnt a better prospect than Matthias NOW though... Because Matthias scored 2 goals in a game playing on a line with Olli Jokinen and Nathan Horton? I could do that. It's like how people are saying Bertuzzi is really coming around...no, he just was moved to a line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, who have been playing very well. It's like how people are saying Bertuzzi is really coming around...no, he just was moved to a line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, who have been playing very well. by that same logic if a player is only as good as the people surrounding him, homer's deflection skills come from being lined with Dats or Z because they are good? I am not sold on the fact that playing no a line completely dictates the skill level. Also it would be different if he started playing on a line with alfie or spezza, but jokinen and horton is not the highest of calibers for a first line. Horton is almost as streaky as Sammy at times. Matthias has skill from what I have seen, from the wjc, and from watching him during his debut.

An assist is an assist is an assist. A point is a point is a point. It doesn't really matter how it's done to me or how ugly it might be, but contributing has got to give any play confidence. What do you expect Matthias or Bertuzzi to do? Blow snot rockets and not tip the puck in or contribute offensively? Just take a nap while their on the ice? Sing the Happy Happy Joy Joy song? Maybe its because we're talking about a guy who stood out for the Canadian team, has lit up the OHL, and has already scored 2 NHL goals at the age of 19. As opposed to Abdelkader, who really hasnt even progressed numbers-wise this year at MSU. How you can even try to argue that J.A. should be recognized as the better prospect right now is beyond me. Sorry but thats pure homerism at its finest. Edited January 20, 2008 by Lou_Siffer
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted January 21, 2008 Are you personally going out of your way to blast the guy just so we're all wrong about the Bertuzzi trade? Nope, just saying for a big guy he doesnt fight much. He'll probably be like an Yzerman or a Gilmour and fight in the heat of the moment a couple times in his career. Not saying anyone is wrong, just that Mattias isnt a big fighter. I'm hoping the kid has a good career, good canadian lad as Grapes would say .
WingNut 25 5 Report post Posted January 21, 2008 Sucks that the team has nothing to show for that deal. Bert is hitting his stride in Anaheim and Matthias gets 2 goals in his first game.

Sorry but thats pure homerism at its finest. Abdelkader is considered Detroit's top forward prospect. He is considered to be a strong two-way forward with a physical game. He is ranked above Zach Torquato, Jan Mursak, and Cory Emmerton..all of whom were not far behind Matthias in OHL performance this season. Matthias is considered to need work on his defensive game. So let's recap; Abdelkader is considered to be a better prospect than players younger than Matthias who are performing near Matthias' level in the same league..therefore, Abdelkader is likely at very least an equal prospect to Matthias, more than likely better. Hank 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2008 well, he certainly wouldn't be [playing in the NHL yet... if he was still in the Wings system it'd be what 3 or 4 years probably before he saw NHL action at least. QFT. It's early yet, and so far in limited action he looks very good. But I don't know if any scout or GM had him penciled in as a top 6 forward. But it looks like he might have turned the corner in that regard. If so, good for him and the Panthers for getting something for Luongo (which it comes down to). I still think he'll be more of a 3rd line centre capable of netting 15 goals. Perhaps a Ryan Kelser type player. But who knows? This kid could be the next Oli Jokinen for all we know? It was still a good deal at the time (as was the Lang deal). But looking back, it'd be nice to have this kid in our cupboard.
