Possible Deals for Cleary, Lilja on the way

I have no idea why they would re-sign Lilja

Umm becuase he's a good PKer, has a crap load of blocked shots, and is a semi-physical guy. I'm glad Kenny's resigning both of them. Now he just needs to lock up Fil too.

i'm like 90% sure Flip will get offer sheeted if we don't sign him before he goes RFA...

and you just know thats going to f*** with our salary structure, cause they'll certainly match

Lilja, Sure he has his D-Baggish moments, but he is pretty solid. And with salary cap, You cant just ditch players who are consistent and bring a good amount of talent to the table, He might not be the most offensive guy. But he do his job, and do it pretty good from time to time. Obviously the contract wont be of epic proportions, No reason to fret about it.

The article suggest a 2.5M two year deal for Lilja. A 250k raise per season for Lilja is nothing. 1.25 per season is more than fair game for Lilja.

As for Flip, we have 6 months before he can get an offer sheet, and honestly he would not be my first choice if i were a GM.

Not first, but definitely right after Cleary.

Sign Cleary, and Babs! Pass on Lilija...we have a lot of young D men and he seems replacable to me. Flip is a must...he will only get better. Huds to me is expendable...he has good skill but his size is an issue.

To date, his size has never been an issue. His skill is what matters and he has LOTS of it.

Not true...he gets pushed off the puck all the time...he has a hard time forechecking and often gets over powered in the slot too. I'm not saying get rid of him for nothing but I wouldn't pay him much more than he's making now either...If it were the right deal I'd accept a trade. He's just one of the players I would say are replaceable.

Like it or not, Lilja is an important part to our team. Even more so now that Markov is gone. Ken Daniels said a couple games ago that Lilja is the leader on the team in hits and blocked shots. Those stats may not be as glamorous as leading scorer or most goals but they are just as important and are even more so in the playoffs. If he makes another bonehead play in the playoffs though, I will kill him.

LOL me too...I guess I didn't notice that he had that many great hits or blocked shots...maybe I'm wrong. That being said those stats are more about working hard than skill and who's to say one of our younger D-men wouldn't bring that to the table?

They may or may not. Who knows. But since it will realistically only take $1.5M at the most to re-sign Lilja, is it really worth taking the risk of throwing Ericsson, Meech, or Quincey out there? With Lilja, you know what you're going to get. With the other 3, we have no idea yet.

That's true...to be honest I just like saving the extra .5 million in the hopes that we can actually sign Hossa and Z...

I really hope Kenny sign both Cleary and Lilja. Babcock will hopefully sign 3-4 years extension..

Cleary is warrior, one of very few Wings who can actually play physical. A must have. I hope Kenny get him signed for about 2mil a year..

Lilja for about 2-2.5mil for 2 years is good price/performance ration.

He has only shown improvement; So why move him?

It seems like sometimes Wings fans have higher hopes for our prospects than those who are already have shown their talent and on a high level.

Cleary deserves a significant raise.

And I'm actually pretty open on Lilja coming back, and Wings management is smart enough not to pony up too much for him. His first year here, I think it's safe to say he was not really that good overall. Say what you want about his terrible gaffe against Anaheim in the playoffs in game 5, but overall in the postseason he was extremely solid and for the most part physical, when again he seemed to start bad last season. For worse you still see some of his brainfart passes/turnovers but they are much fewer now it seems then when he started out with the Wings. He's a solid PKer, blocks shots, and has decent size which people in here yell about constantly that we don't have enough of it.

Cleary does deserve a big raise but I'm a little concerned that the Sharp signing is going to drasticall inflate his and/or his agent's expectations. There is a cap to what I'd be willing to pay for Dan, no matter how awesome he's been. I'm hoping he keeps it reasonable and we are able to resign him. If it doesn't look like he will, though, I'd be loathe to let him go for nothing.

Because his size won't ever improve...again I am not saying he is a problem or has to be gone tomorrow I am just saying that if we are looking to upgrade the team, he's one of the players I would look at.

With any luck, if Lilja gets signed long-term, he'll be forever considered right up there with other great Wings enforcers like Probert and Kocur. Also, I'll always have plenty to write about on LGW as long as the "PAIN TRAIN" is around. Get it done Kenny.
