1st line start for him?

I really haven't seen this guy play, but after all this hype,I thought he was a commanding leader in points.

Turns out he's 14th. 38 games, 8 goals+24 assists.

Someone said "he's really tearing it up" in the rumor mill thread?

I wonder what Tony Martensson and Jukka Voutilainen are doing then?

Get 'em here instead,Kenny!

He's also what, 21 or 22? Martenssen is 28, that's a huge difference.

Coming right out of Sweden's #3 league, that's pretty much "tearing it up."

MÃ¥rtensson doesn't have an out-clause and Voutilainen is too small for the NHL. And then there's the age difference, as mentioned just above this post. Edited by Systemfel

That's true. But he still has no chance for a 1st line job in the NHL.

Hell,Janne Niskala was tearing Swedish league up in the 2006-07 season:

53 games,19+30=49 (and he's a defenseman) !

This season he's playing in the AHL...

That's impressive, this story is starting to remind me of Pasi Nurminen.

In 1997 he was 22 yrs old, working minimum wage and playing in Finland's s***ty #2 league.

4 years later he played in the NHL.

I change my mind, get it done Kenny!

Which probably means he has a completely inferior defensive game.

Just as inferior as Florida's Cory Murphy or Minnesota's Petteri Nummelin.

But he was by far the best PP quarterback in Europe last season.

Mlive Snapshots has been following this story a lot.

Apparently, the Leafs sent a rep to literally "wine and dine" him, even meeting his family, and showing a video of what life would be like playing for the Leafs (I assume never winning the cup was featured).

I think I read it was either Nill or Holland that made a trip to Sweeden to meet with him. Here's some more info from Mlive...

As St. James notes, the Wings are more interested in the other "best Swede not playing in the NHL":

If the Wings do gain another Swede this spring, it'll probably be Fabian Brunnstrom, an almost 23-year-old forward who's become a star in the Swedish Elite League. He went undrafted, but now NHL teams are taking notice, and the Wings are among teams who are interested.

I spoke with general manager Ken Holland about Brunnstrom earlier this week, and Holland said the Wings like him, but of course there are questions about whether he can adapt to playing North American hockey, and how fast he can do so. Under any circumstance, all NHL clubs are on an even field as far as what entry-level contract they can offer Brunnstrom, so on his part, it'll come down to which club he deems most attractive. For a Swede making his first foray into North America, it's hard to think a team where he'd be surrounded by so many countrymen wouldn't be very attractive.

The Detroit News's Ted Kulfan confirmed what Ken Holland said on Fox Sports Detroit on Wednesday night--the Wings are definitely interested in competing for Brunnstrom's services:

January 25, Detroit News: Forward Fabian Brunnstrom, an undrafted player in Sweden who has blossomed the last two seasons, is an unrestricted free agent drawing interest from the Wings and numerous NHL teams. But with the Wings' strong Swedish influence on the roster, and overall success, the Wings could have an edge in signing him.

Brunnstrom, who will be 23 on Feb. 6, is expected to sign with an NHL team in the next several weeks.

"We like him, we made him a contract offer and we consider him a good prospect," general manager Ken Holland said. "He's a late bloomer. He has good hockey sense."

Vancouver, Anaheim and Toronto also have shown considerable interest. Vancouver would like to put him on a line with Swedish twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin.

Holland said Brunnstrom (6-feet-1, 195 pounds) can't sign with an NHL team until his Swedish Elite team Farjestad (currently seeded second) is done with its season in March or early April, depending on how far it advances in the playoffs.

Therein lies the rub. More on that in a minute.

January 25, Detroit News: Brunnstrom became a hot prospect last season when he dominated a lower Swedish division with 73 points in 41 games.

"He's coming pretty much from nowhere," Farjestad general manager Hakan Loob told the Hockey News earlier this season. "Mentally, he has grown strong in the past year, but he has the potential to become mentally stronger. He looks like he has been in the Elite League for a couple of years the way he moves the puck and skates."

The tricks in signing Brunnstrom are two-fold, mostly because rookie salaries are capped at $850,000, though bonuses can balloon that salary to $3.83 million.

First and foremost, the entire $3.83 million has to be declared in a team's first Averaged Club Salary figure. The attainable bonuses can be deferred, much like over-35-players' bonuses, to the next year's cap figure--but if and only if they're deemed unlikely to be attained during a particular regular season. That's why the Wings had to clear about $1.3 million in cap space to account for both Igor Grigorenko's $858,000 salary and approximately $400,000 in bonuses.

As a result, the team with the best "pitch," in terms of the quality of the organization, willingness to guarantee Brunnstrom a spot on the roster, and size and/or quality of the team's Swedish contingent all come into play.

In your humble blogger's opinion? Hey, the kid wears #96...

...there, fixed it for ya! :D

Well played, well played! But I was going more for the allure of his Swedish counterparts being a bigger draw than star status...but then again, with the Wings they are the same haha. Let's hope Holland does get this kid, put him on the second line:

Sammy - Zets - Homer

Brunner - Flip - Dats

Cleary - The Franz - ...

... - ... - ...

Subsitute "..." with anyone you like

...I know, I know, I was just tongue in cheeking it! LOL! I got ya!

...I can hear it now, evertime he scores they would either play the famous "Fabian" hit "Turn Me Loose" (made even more famous by Loverboy) -OR- they could put "Laverne & Shirley" up on the scoreboard saying "FABIAN" in their long drawn out lovesick rendition. Of course eveyone knows that "Fabian" was Laverne & Shirley favorite teen idol heartthrob actor!

Helene St. James' blog is the source:

The Wings are, however, believed to have secured the services of Fabian Brunnstrom, an almost 23-year-old forward who’s become a star in the Swedish Elite League. They’re on a level playing field with other NHL clubs as to what contract can be offered, but have the advantage in offering him a locker room filled with seven countrymen.

I'm getting tired of hearing so much about him. He's already 23, and is finally playing well. What's his NHL potential supposed to be? Seems to me like he'll be a third liner at best.

...cool! If it's true. I cannot understand Forsberg though, why won't he sign here? He is going to Philly?!?!? I guess he is not interested in winning a Cup is he? Oh well, bring on Fabian, Fedorov & Foote!

Fedorov? Lmao. Yes, we definitely need more centers. Especially terrible ones like Fedorov. That will surely put the Wings over the hump.

Fedorov would make no sense and would be a detriment to the team.

It's frustrating to hear all the hype but not be able to see him play.

Incidentally, if you're named after the band Agalloch, I just had lunch with Don Anderson yesterday. There's a new EP coming out and he's got a new Sculptured album as well.

Is that anything like how Pavel Datsyuk was a measly 6th round pick and didn't make it to North America til he was 23?

He's 22.

Wanna take a guess on how old Pavel and Z were when they finally crossed the pond? Z was 22 and Pavel 23.

I hate you RED....
