REPORT: Red Wing scouts were in St. Louis watching L.A. Kings defensemen

February 17, 2008

NHL.com's Larry Wigge wrote a portion of his notebook on the Wings. A clip:

Three Red Wings scouts were in St. Louis to watch the Los Angeles Kings on Feb. 12, leading rumor-mongers to heat up the speculation that Detroit GM Ken Holland is really, really interested in L.A. defenseman Brad Stuart. But this part of scouting is just due diligence on the part of the Wings' GM and his staff in case he can find a bargain to make his team stronger going into the playoffs (To me, LA d-man Jaroslav Modry would fit in Detroit's lineup better and would be much less expensive.).

Also, coach Mike Babcock told me earlier this season that he can't wait to get defense prospect J[onathan] Ericsson in his lineup, so I don't think there will be any expensive rental trades for Detroit unless it's up front -- someone like Sergei Fedorov perhaps, since it doesn't appear like Columbus will bring him back after his contract is finished this season. Remember, even while his team is in a skid, top-six forward Dan Cleary is out with a fractured cheekbone, goaltender Dominik Hasek with a hip flexor and defenseman Niklas Kronwall with a shoulder injury -- and all are expected back before the playoffs.

Blake, and Foote are both big and have a mean streak so I would not mind either of them. But if we are going to get someone who is small and not physical, what is the point. We already have players like that. Who is our most physical defenseman? Lilja? he is only physical some of the time. I think that this is the one big problem our team has.

Maybe we can send lilja back to LA in the process and in so doing, cure our achilles heel on D.

I'd hate to see Lilja leave, but LA would be a good place for him with his recent popularity surge. I can totally see him dating several good looking celebrities here and there.

I would rather get rid of Lebda than Lilja for the sole reason that Lilja can be physical when he wants to. I just wish that he was physical all of the time and make the other team pay for coming into our end of the ice. Then it would be easier to over look all of the mistakes that he makes.
