Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

Detroit will have absolutely no problem having Hossa on the books next season, as Hanks contract wont kick in til the season after that. 09/10 is what Im more worried about. And hopefully, they can offer Cleary a longer term contract (5 years?) at a cheaper price (2.5?), which in reality is a deal Cleary might take, as thats a lot of security for such an inconsistent player as Cleary. Now, hopefully when/if Detroit re-signs their players, they'll re-sign them all to at least 2 year deals (except Chelios), so they can calculate how much money theyll have booked for 09/10.

A look at 08/09

Cap: ~54M

Hudler(1.1) - Hank(2.65) - Hossa (7)

Cleary(2.5) - Datsyuk(6.7) - Homer (2.25)

Kopecky (.5)- Franzen (.94) - Sammy (1.2)

Maltby(.88)- Draper(1.5) - Dmac? (.5)

Downey (.55)

Lidstrom (7.4) - Ericsson (.65)

Raffi (6) - Kronner (3)

Lebda (.65) - Cheli (.8)

Quincey (.65)

Osgood (1.4)

Howard (.8)

Total: ~49.9M

09/10

Estimated cap ~56M

Hudler(2.5) - Hank(7) - Hossa (7)

Cleary(2.5) - Datsyuk(6.7) - Homer (2.25)

Abdelkader?(.6) - Kopecky (.7) - UFA (1.2)

Maltby(.88) - Draper(1.5)- Dmac?(.5)

Downey (.55)

Lidstrom (7.4) - Ericsson (.65)

Raffi (6) - Kronner (3)

Lebda (.65) - Quincey (.65)

UFA/prospect (.65)

Osgood (1.4)

Howard (.8)

Cap: 55.1 - If the Wings can talk Hudler, wholl be an RFA if hes still around, into taking a one year deal at maybe 1.8M for the 09/10 season and wait to see what they can give him after Lidstroms salary comes off the books in 10/11, then we'd be looking at a around 54.5M payroll, which would still give Detroit some space under the cap in 09/10.

It is doable.

It's simple for me. I have the philosophy of win now, worry about tomorrow tomorrow <--within reason of course.

If you have a chance to win now, you hae to take it. The Wings may not have this good a chance to win the cup for a long time. Lids career is almost over, I say the Wings should go all in and try to grab Hossa. Although, I would like to see them get a D-man more, but if they could grab both, forget about it.

I can't see Detroit being able to match a "right-now" package that could be offered by Montreal (Ryder) or San Jose (Marleau).

I don't see Ryder being anything more solid than an offer including Flip and Huds, and with Atlanta wanting to build a winning team, they are probably looking for youth more than anything, and Marleau isn't exactly young. The Thrash already have vets on their team including Recchi and others.

Let's take a look at this. The Cap has been raising by about 3m per season steadily. The cap figure is 54m for next season. So we'll go assuming a 09-10 cap figure of 55.5; this would be half of what the increase has been to date.

So here's some projections based on that figure.

This is the Wings' contract situation for next season:

FORWARDS

Datsyuk $6.7m

Zetterberg $2.65m

Holmstrom $2.25m

Draper $1.583m

Samuelsson $1.2m

Hudler $1.015m

Franzen $942k

Maltby $883k

Kopecky $500k

Ellis $475k

Filppula RFA

Cleary UFA

Drake UFA

Downey UFA

Hartigan UFA

DEFENSEMEN

Lidstrom $7.45m

Rafalski $6m

Kronwall $3m

Lebda $650k

Meech $483k

Quincey RFA

Chelios UFA

Lilja UFA

GOALTENDERS

Osgood $1.417m

Howard RFA

Hasek UFA

That's 10-5-1 at a price of $37,190,000. This leaves just shy of $17m to finish out the roster if the Wings spend to the cap.

Now let's fill in some numbers. Cleary should be getting $2.25m, Filppula should be seeing maybe $1.5m, Drake and Downey will either resign or be replaced for less than $600k...so we'll use that for their roster spots. Chelios and Lilja can be marked down for $1.25m. Howard will likely be up next year at a maximum cost of $900k, so we'll use that.

We've just bumped the payroll to $45,640,000 and filled the roster out to 14-7-2. So we still have 9m to play with for next season. Looking to the 09-10 season, we'll say Z gets bumped to 7m even, a raise of $4.35m. Samuelsson, Hudler, Franzen, Kopecky, and Ellis are free agents after next season. So let's mark them down for 1.5m, 1.45m, 1m, 650k, and 550k for a total of 4.95m, a bump of 818k from their current salaries. Payroll is now at $50,820,000. We have 3.18m free if you assume that the cap is at 54m in 09-10.

So let's look at a Hossa deal.

He'll likely cost at most 7m to sign, so we need to shave off about 2.32m in 09-10 salary from my example just to fit him under the 54m cap. The Thrashers would want a couple of roster players, so this can be done in one deal. Filppula and Samuelsson would combine for $3m. So if the Wings can trade Flip/Sammy plus a pick/prospect for Hossa and as part of the deal sign Hossa to a deal of 7m or less, there is NO reason not to do it.

Bring on Hossa!

Haha. Oh the irony of this post!! I know what you mean. Both have 30 goal seasons to their name, but its just kind of amusing to think about how last year, theres no WAY Detroit would be able to compete with those names. But this year...

Marleau: 10G, 18A, 28P, -21

Ryder: 11G, 11A, 22P, -1

Filppula: 16G, 12A, 28P, +17

not to mention...

Marleau: 6.3M, UFA in 2 years, 28 years old

Ryder: 2.95M, UFA, 26 years old

Filppula: 730k, RFA (UFA in 4 years at the earliest), 23 years old

What if Brunnstrom decides to sign with the Wings this summer?

He would be signing for less than a million with the Wings, for three years. There is enough room where Bruunstrom replacing another forward wouldn't make a difference in whether we could retain Hossa.

Sharks GM Doug Wilson has upped the ante by offering C Patrick Marleau as part of a trade for Thrashers F Marian Hossa, according to the Toronto Sun.

That would seem to match the requirement stated by Thrashers GM Don Waddell, who has said he wants immediate help if he trades Hossa.

"You make lots of tough decisions," Waddell told the Toronto Sun. "I still remain with three options: The first one is closing in on us with the deadline and that is signing him. The second is trading him and the third is keeping him to try to win the Southeast Division, which is very important to us. We're two points out of a playoff spot. That's big for us."

Theres a heavy rumor going down that Montreal has traded Ryder and a 1st to Calgary for Tanguay. Per The Score.

If thats true, then Im psyched. In my mind Montreal is our biggest competition for Hossa.

Are u watching drive this?

Honestly, if the Sharks trade Marleau for Hossa, its a good addition for them, but take a look at their scoring. Its pathetic. They only have 2 players with more than 30 points. Big Joe has 68, and Michalek has 40. Thats it. NO ONE on the entire squad has 20 goals.

Id be a lot more fearful of the Sharks with Hossa AND Marleau, than just with Hossa. IMO, they can't afford to take a top 6 forward off their roster, but theyre clearly desperate. Hossa is clearly an upgrade over Marleau, but in reality, they needed to ADD another forward, not just upgrade.

Not to mention, whose gonna be their #2 center now? Roenick? Pavelski?

With more buyers than sellers, Holland acknowledged that the price tag on some of the available players is very high.

"Teams that are sellers are looking for a big price," Holland said. "We'd like to get deeper, but right now teams are talking about our best 4-5 prospects. We're not going to trade somebody like that for depth."

http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/det080220.html

Man, there isn't going to be much that will happen. The big players are going to go to more desperate teams. I was thinking a big trade would be announced today but we aren't going to see anything until the deadline.
