Holland to offer McCarty a contract?

Mac's got a ways to go, but I wouldn't count him out just yet. After all, Joey Kocur made a comeback to help us win the cup in 1997 under similar circumstances.

Holland has plenty of cap space to sign McCarty. and with playoff rental players being sold

mostly for draft picks (which Kenny will NOT give away) not for money, there's every reason

he should go and sign Mac.

but... the sole fact does not yet mean Mac will soon or ever play in Wings. he may as well

finish the season in the AHL. but should he improve and become NHL-ready or should Wings

have a hole in their line-up in playoffs - it's better to have him signed just for the depth

reasons. for league minimum this is just a win-win situation for Kenny

One thing to keep in mind about Darren McCarty possibly being offered a contract by the Red Wings ... that doesn't mean that he'll be playing for the Red Wings. Evan McGrath is under contract with the Red Wings. So is Jakub Kindl. And Darren Helm.

If McCarty gets a contract, and he'll need one to continue playing for Grand Rapids past his pro tryout stay, he will still need to be recalled by the Red Wings before he returns to the NHL. That's no small step.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

DETROIT -- Darren McCarty is close to joining the Detroit Red Wings again.

General manager Ken Holland said Wednesday the team is "leaning toward offering him a contract."

McCarty played in Detroit from 1993 through 2004. He has been productive in comeback stints with the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins and the International Hockey League's Flint Generals.

He was scoreless in 32 games last season, his second with the Calgary Flames.

McCarty was a fan favourite in Detroit, where the physical forward helped the Red Wings win three Stanley Cups in 1997, 1998 and 2002.

found this on sportsnet.ca and didnt feel like going through the rest of the thread to see if it had been posted.

Didn't want to make a new thread, BUT Babcock has said the Wings WILL be signing Mac.

WOOO HOOO! GO D-MAC!!

Of course though, he's gotta stay in GR for awhile, and get back in shape.

I think this is awesome. You send McCarty out there to beat someone up you can throw Fair Justice out the pansy window. McCarty is going to mess that guy up!! He'll give the turtle a new hole to peak his head out from.

So does he have to clear waivers then?

Still not crazy about this either.

Well if he stinks then no big deal. He'll be making league minimum anyway. It's a risk worth taking. Mac's heart alone is worth bringing back. He'll go through a wall for his teammates and he has proven that. You can't teach heart and Mac has it in spades. Hopefully his teammates will see that and it will make them play harder as well. Like Babcock says we need to play GREASY HOCKEY from time to time. Especially against teams like the Ducks. Now if we get Lapointe back I'll REALLY be happy!

i do feel that it would be a good risk to take.

So did the Wings put Ellis on waivers to make room for D Mac? Could we be seeing him in a uniform sooner rather then later or is this just to make room for another player (or just regular player movement?)

Has anyone seen Mac since his return? If so how does he look?

I saw him the day after he got his trick in his GR home debut. He didnt look bad when I saw him, he got in a fight, and the crowd was really good in giving him ovations, but the game I went to, he didnt factor in the scoring at all. last I checked, he has 4 goals and 3 assists in 6 games
